What’s the Smart Phone?

In an increasingly mobile world, the smart phone has become a

lifestyle changing device.

The smart phone is the first device to provide instant

access to the internet and online information resources

wherever consumers go. Time-starved consumers say that

smart phones improve their quality of life by allowing them

to multitask on-the-move.

The Smartphone with Android OS supports almost every

media formats including BMO, GIF, PNG, JPEG, WAV, Mp3,

Mp4, MPEG-4 SP, etc.

What’s the Origin of Smart Phone?

A smart phone will be based on a particular operating

system that allows it to run productivity applications.

As compared to other cell phones Smart phones rely more

heavily on Software.

Most of the Smart phones are primarily concerned with the

speed of Web Access.

Smart phones consist of a QWERTY Keyboard.

All cell phones can send and receive text messages.

IBM Simon (introduced 1992) in charging station

The first smart phone was the IBM Simon; it was designed in 1992

and the computer industry trade show held in Las Vegas, Nevada.

It was released to the public in 1993 and sold by BellSouth.

Besides being a mobile phone, it also contained a calendar, address

book, world clock, calculator, note pad, e-mail client, the ability to

send and receive faxes and games. It had no physical buttons,

instead customers used a touchscreen to select telephone numbers

with a finger

In 1998, it was followed by Nokia 9110, and in 2000 by Nokia

9110i , with improved web browsing capability.

In 2000, the touch screen Ericsson R380 Smartphone was

released.

It was the first device to use an open operating system, the

Symbian OS.

It was the first device marketed as a 'smart phone'.

It combined the functions of a mobile phone and a personal digital

assistant (PDA).

Also in 2000, the Nokia 9210 communicator was introduced, which was the first color screen model from the above Nokia Communicator line. It was a true smart phone with an open operating system, the Symbian OS.

It was followed by the 9500 Communicator, which also was Nokia's first camera phone and first Wi-Fi phone

range of multimedia features into a consumer-oriented smartphone:

GPS, a 5 megapixel camera with autofocus and LED flash, 3G and

Wi-Fi connectivity.

In 2007, Apple Inc introduced its first iPhone. It was initially

costly, priced at $499 .

It was one of the first mobile phones to be mainly controlled through

a touch screen.

It was the first mobile phone to use a multi-touch interface, and it

featured a web browser that “far superior” than others.

Evolution of Smart Phone? The Android operating system for smart phones was released in

2008. Android is an open-source platform backed by Google, along

with major hardware and software developers

Smartphone sales increased in 2010 by 72.1 percent from the prior

year, whereas sales for all mobile phones only increased by 31.8

percent.

In the fourth quarter of 2010, Android surpassed Symbian as the

most common operating system in smart phones, with 32.9 million

units sold versus 31.0 million

In Q1 2011 Google Android market share was 35 percent and

increased significantly from 10 percent last year, while Nokia

Symbian dropped to 26 percent from 46 percent last year.
