    SMART Matrix

    What It Is

A SMART matrix is a communication and planning tool used to identify the specifics of actions or tasks.

SMART stands for specific, measurable, attainable, resources, and time.

It is an L-shaped matrix designed to capture the key points of a teams proect o!ecti"es.

It pro"ides a process to re"ie# ho# actions are !eing implemented around "arious attri!utes.

    When to Use It

$hen you need to analy%e an implementation plans tasks to ensure they are on track.

$hen you need to understand the amount of resources needed to implement a plan.

$hen you need to understand ho# the "arious tasks are se&uenced and related.

    How to Use It

    'n a piece of flip chart paper dra# an L-shaped matrix #ith fi"e columns la!eled Specific( Measura!le(

    Attaina!le( Resources( and Time.

$rite the implementation plan title in the upper left of the chart.

)etail the specific tasks to !e performed. Make the task statement detailed and #ell defined. The example

in the figure !elo# sho#s a com!ination of task and o!ecti"e statements pro"iding measures( outcomes( and

    time frames.

    *or each detailed specific task+

o )efine a measure or indicator that can !e tracked.

o )etermine ho# it #ill !e attained in actiona!le terms that are realistic and feasi!le.

o Indicate the amount and type of resources re&uired to complete each task identified.

o Identify the timeline for completion.

'nce you ha"e completed the matrix( re"ie# the results #ith the implementation team to ensure that you

ha"e accounted for and recorded e"erything.

Re"ie# the matrix to make sure the timeline is realistic and all tasks are not due to !e completed on the

    same day.

Re"ie# the matrix and get a feel for the total amount of resources re&uired. )etermine if they are a"aila!le

or if adustments need to !e made.

    The figure !elo# sho#s a ta!le summari%ing the detailed con"ersation generated !y using the SMART matrix. ,otes

#ithin the matrix indicate areas of resource constraints that re&uire attention from proect sponsors and department

    leadership.
