AMAZON & MICROSOFTANNOUNCED: AUGUST 2017
11 PARTNERSHIPS DRIVING THE SMART HOME INDUSTRY FORWARD
In a surprise move, Amazon and Microsoft haveannounced a partnership to better integrate AI assistants Alexa and Cortana. The integration meanseach company’s respective customers will be able toaccess unique features that the other company’s digitalassistant provides.A partnership between two of four of the biggest AI assistant providers could signala move away from the lack of collaboration between Amazon, Microsoft, Googleand Apple that threatens the interoperability potential of future smart homes.
Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos has reportedly welcomed Google and Apple to approachhis company for a partnership of a similar kind.

Another partnership that has positive signals forinteroperability in future smart homes.British Gas’ Hive is a sizeable provider of smart home products andservices without an AI assistant of its own. The company’s Amazonintegration brings voice-activated AI to its products with the addition ofsome new and customizable features.
This collaboration is indicative of Amazon’s smart home partneringapproach overall. With partnerships far and wide, including a diverse rangeof product and service providers, Amazon looks well placed to become themost essential smart home product provider.

APPLE & HUNTER FAN COMPANYANNOUNCED: JANUARY 2016
11 PARTNERSHIPS DRIVING THE SMART HOME INDUSTRY FORWARD
Apple’s approach to partnering in the smart homemarket has been less prolific. While Amazon favors an open-systems approach to speed up development, Appleprefers to exert more control over the technology of its partners. At the start ofthe year, Apple’s Homekit was compatible with fewer than half the number ofdevices Alexa could work with.
This approach has its benefits – it ensures Apple’s partners provide levels ofsecurity and ease-of-use that meet Apple’s own high standards. This particularpartnership between Apple and Hunter Fan Company demonstrates Apple’s abilityto lure in the big home brands.
However, the lack of volume in partnerships could hurt Apple’s smart homepotential in the face of stiff competition.

Smart lighting company Nanoleaf located bugs that they’d missed through their original testingthanks to Apple’s rigorous certification process. CEO Gimmy Chu praised the certification forensuring his company’s technology was “rock solid”. The same process means Apple can guarantee the security of third-party providers, unlike Amazon.
SONOS & AMAZON, GOOGLE, APPLEANNOUNCED: OCTOBER 2017
11 PARTNERSHIPS DRIVING THE SMART HOME INDUSTRY FORWARD
Next year Sonos could potentially fulfill its promise ofbeing “the only smart speaker you’ll ever need.”Following the integration of Alexa, Sonos products will also support Siri andGoogle Assistant in 2018 – a level of multiplatform support that is a first amongsmart speakers. They’ll also be able to control Amazon Music, Pandora, iHeartRadio and Spotify via their products.
If this partnering approach can be replicated by more smart home devicemanufacturers, a high level of interoperability in future smart homes would be farmore feasible.

They’vecombined to create the Home Security Starter Kit, a self-installing securityproduct powered by Samsung’s SmartThings platform and ADT’sprofessional monitoring services. BIXBY’S ROLE IN THE SMART HOME FUTUREThe general perception is Samsung hasn’t kept pace with other big brand smart home productproviders, even with the 2014 acquisition of startup SmartThings. But now the company’s smarthome plans are coming to fruition – with an emphasis on home routers – and it’s Bixby Home thatwill tie all of Samsung’s home offerings together.

NEST & THEIR CUSTOMERSANNOUNCED: AUGUST 2017
Z-WAVE & HACKERSANNOUNCED: DECEMBER 2015
It’s unsurprising that solar eclipses reduce solar power production when they occur. What is surprising isthe impact – 2017’s eclipse in the United States reduced solar power across the country by an estimated9 gigawatts, the equivalent of about nine nuclear power plants.Nest opted to partner with customers to alleviate this drop off in available power. Once customers “counted in,” Nest programmed their houses tocool before and during the eclipse, turning off AC where appropriate to reduce power use.
The campaign likely resonated with smart home adopters, a demographic more likely to act on environmental concerns more than most.
At Black Hat’s 2013 conference, security experts demonstrated how vulnerable Z-Wave smart locks andmotion sensors were to hackers. In reaction, Sigma Designs and the Z-Wave Alliance enlisted the help ofthe same experts and hackers to help secure its wireless communications protocol.“We said: ‘These guys know what they are talking about in terms of security. Let’s embrace their work and the hacker community at large and havethem help us create a new security platform,” Z-Wave commented.
The resulting Security 2 (S2) security framework, announced towards the end of 2015, is far more secure and employs techniques adopted fromthe financial sector.
