IntroductionThe World Knowledge Forum is a non-profit entity, which aims to promote balanced global growth and prosperity through knowledge-sharing. The largest business forum in Asia, the World Knowledge Forum brings together global leaders to address the importance of knowledge in meeting the challenges and opportunities of a rapidly changing world.

The World Knowledge Forum was conceived as part of the Vision Korea Project, a campaign launched by Maeil Business Newspaper in 1997, to propose new visions for development to Korea and to the global community. The first World Knowledge Forum, entitled ‘Shaping the New Millennium with Knowledge,’ took place in 2000, shortly after the Asian financial crisis. Partnering with the Financial Times, Bloomberg, Nikkei and Dow Johns, the Forum has since grown to encompass 90 sessions featuring 200 panelists from all over the world.

We need to spend more time in events like the World Knowledge Forum talking about big issues.

Overall, I was very impressed with the event, both in terms of the intellectual bandwidth of the subjects and the participants, and of course, the superb organisation.

The World Knowledge Forum is the world’s best vehicle indeed for global scholars to gather together in one place and exchange in-depth ideas.

A very productive meeting. It was truly great to learn from various point of views throughout the whole forum.

- Niall Ferguson, Professor at Harvard University

- Carl Bildt, Prime Minister of Sweden (1991~1994), GCIG Commissioner

- Li Yining, Honorary Dean at Guanghua School of Management, Peking University

- Koichi Hamada, Tuntex Professor Emeritus of Economics, Yale University

05A New Era has begun. It is now impractical to hope forthe sort of rapid economic growth we experiencedin the past. Global issues such as the Ukrainian crisis, expansion of the Islamic State, power struggle betweenthe U.S. and China, and geopolitical conflicts are onlya small number of issues the world is currently facing. In the midst of economic stagnation and complexgeopolitical conflicts, nations are struggling to developinnovative strategies for stability. The atmosphere ofuncertainty has penetrated into nations, corporations, and individuals alike, and creating sufficient actionplans has become drastically more complex. At the 16th World Knowledge Forum, we plan to shareknowledge that is essential in addressing the pressingissues of our era. For the past 15 years, over 200 speakersand 3,000 participants have put their heads togetherannually to discuss and debate on numerous globalaffairs. I guarantee there will be in-depth discussionsregarding geopolitics, economics, and social issues atthe 16th World Knowledge Forum. I invite you to joinus at the 16th World Knowledge Forum in Seoul fromOctober 20th to October 22nd, 2015.

Upon exiting the long tunnel of the global financial crisis, the world economy is bogged down by stagnant growth. Various risks scattered throughout the

globe are hindering economic growth and prosperity. The absence of global leadership in 2014 has caused sounds of discord around the world. Russia’s

annexing of Crimea, the revival of Japanese militarism, intensifying tensions between China and her neighbors, and the Iraqi civil war are clear examples of

how geo-political threats have escalated more than ever before. Each nation faces growing internal social dissonance as the discontent populace sound

concerns on income and wealth inequality. As growth stands still, many jobless middle class are heading to the streets, and populists are taking advantage

to make their voices heard. Technological innovations, represented by robotics and the Internet of Things, forewarn a grand transition to a new digital era.

The adaptation to the massive changes will determine the fate of nations, firms, and individuals. If we cannot seek a solution to overcome this era of

growing uncertainty, the current lethargy will worsen. Last year’s World Knowledge Forum chose the theme “Invigorating the Global Economy” to focus on

solutions to revive the stagnant world economy.
