Wilfley Model S3 Chemical Slurry Pumps

Wilfley hydraulic seal in actual operation.

The combined corrosive and abrasiveaction of many of today’s modernprocesses have required compromisesfrom traditional pumps. Slurry pumpshave generally been too heavy indesign and uncompromising for alloyconstruction. Acid pump designs havebeen too light for some of the robustapplications. A clear need for an alter-nate choice was the reason for the birthof the Wilfley S3.

This unique Wilfley S3 was designedspecifically for corrosive/slurry applica-tions. The pumps have a strong, solidpower frame that can withstand highheads, speeds and specific gravities. It can be upgraded for extreme duties.

The pump’s hydraulic parts are designedto be made of a wide range of materials. The pump designs are flexible enoughto customize pumps for specific services.

Clearly, the most outstanding featureof the S3 is the Expeller/DryLockt sealcombination. The Expeller has been ahallmark of Wilfley pumps since 1919.Wilfley invented it and has perfected itsoperation during the last 80 years.

The Expeller seals the pump while running. The DryLockt is an adaptation of theseal that has made Wilfley’s A7 ANSIchemical pump a leader in corrosivefluid handling. The repeatable andpredictable smooth action of the sealensures leak free startups and stops.

The DryLockt has been modified tothrive in the most aggressive slurries. There is no rubbing contact while thepump is running and no need forcooling flushes. However, multipleflush ports are available to clear anycaking materials.

Wilfley free engineering service matchesthe pump to your specific application.Systems will be analyzed to ensureleak free, efficient and reliable pumpoperation. Each pump is tested beforeleaving our plant. It is through thisthorough preparation that we canguarantee the operation of Wilfleypumps to your complete satisfaction.

Wilfley’s application and engineeringstaff continue to provide the most upto date information and innovative tech-nology on pumps and pump processesto customers and the world. The S3joins Wilfley’s line of slurry and acidpumps to provide coverage of yourcentrifugal pump needs.

Wilfley Model S3 Features and Benefits

Extra wall thickness extends wearlife (1/4” corrosion allowance vs.1/8” with standard ANSI/ASME).

The large closed impellervanesprovide highly efficient pumpingand long wear life. The front pumpout vanes reduce circulation.

The Drylock® seal is a modularcartridge design, simplifying main-tenance. Slurry performance hasbeen improved by adding Wilfley’snew, patented Barrier Ring.

Optional expeller drain andcasing drain (not shown)available for both operationaland safety purpose.

The Wilfley expeller is a non-contactinghydrodynamic seal that provides long, trouble free life minimizing operating costsand downtime.

Shaft sleeveavailable ina wide varietyof materialsfor corrosionresistance.

Expeller performance hasbeen enhanced by addingfixed radial vanes on thecase plate which serve asself flushing vortex breakers.

Page 6: SmaRT 906 Handheld Remote User Manual

Corrosion resistant non-metallic labyrinth oilseals isolate the bearings from contamination, improving life. Other seals are available.

Heavier shaft and short overhang resultin low L3/D4 ratio for minimum dynamicdeflection under heavy loads.

Bearings are designed for long life underheavy loads. Optional Extreme DutyBearings available to expand operatingrange and/or to increase L10 life.

Large oil sump capacity providesmaximum cooling and room forheating/cooling coils.

Frame foot eases handlingduring maintenance.

• A wide range of materials are available.• Guards (not shown) isolate all moving parts.

Wilfley Model S3 Features and Benefits

DryLock®

The DryLock® uses the action ofcentrifugal force combined with thesmooth actuation of bearing balls toopen and close the seal. As the pumpstarts up, the expeller evacuates theliquid in the seal area. The balls of theDryLock® are forced outward andslide up a ramp in the ball housing.

The ramp forces the balls against theactuator plate and opens the sealfaces. Upon shut-down, the balls losetheir centrifugal force allowing thespring-loaded actuator plate to moveback into its closed position. The sealis then closed.

Materials

A.R. Wilfley & Sons manufactures S3centrifugal pumps in a variety of mate-rials including special combinationsof alloys.

Wilfley's engineering staff has theexpertise and experience to assist inmaterial selections. To help in thisservice, Wilfley maintains an extensivelibrary of pump services and corro-sion/abrasive data. Wilfley is continuallytesting the effects of both abrasionand corrosion on a wide variety ofmaterials as well as actively developingnew ones.

Wilfley’s in-house metallurgicaldepartment has developed uniquematerials to survive in the most hostileenvironments. These proprietary mate-rials were developed to extend the wearlife of parts in extreme corrosive andabrasive conditions.

CD4MCu and Maxalloy 5™ arecommonly used alloys. Wilfley’sfoundry and metallurgical staff havedeveloped proprietary processesenhancing these alloys for improvedpump performance.

WCD4TM

This derivative of CD4MCU providesoutstanding corrosion resistance and anincreased hardness to 320 – 350 Brinell.

Maxalloy 5TM

This is a machinable 27% ChromeAlloy Wilfley has developed withexceptional corrosion resistance andhardness over 600 Brinell.

Please consult Wilfley directly for anyspecial alloy combination requirements.

General Installation Recommendations

Choosing Pump Location

Locate the pump as close to the liquidsource as practical so the suction pipeis short and direct with a minimum ofelbows, fittings and valves.

Place the pump in a location so the unit isaccessible for inspection during operationas well as for maintenance operationsinvolving removal and disassembly.

Foundation

The foundation should be strong enoughto absorb any vibration and to form apermanent support for the baseplate. This is important in maintaining thealignment of the direct connected unit.Foundation bolts of the proper sizeshould be embedded in the concretelocated by the outline drawing.

Alignment

The pump and motor are aligned atthe factory before shipment. However, realignment is necessary after thecomplete unit has been installed.Guidelines for checking and aligningthe pump components may be foundin the Hydraulic Institute Standards.

Piping

Both suction and discharge pipesshould be supported independentlynear the pump so when the flangebolts are tightened no strain will betransmitted to the casing.

A check valve should be be installedin the discharge line to prevent fluidfrom flowing back through the pumpwhile it is shut down. Gate valvesshould be installed in both dischargeand suction lines to isolate the pumpduring maintenance.

Care must be taken in sizing and locatingsuction piping to prevent cavitation.
