Question: How is the exhaust routed under the body?
The exhaust is routed either in a channel or surface mounted.•If surface mounted, it is highly recommended that the body builder attaches a kick strip plate to the underside of the floor. This will be a good base for the mounting of the exhaust brackets and simplify the installation It will also act as additional heatthe exhaust brackets and simplify the installation . It will also act as additional heat shielding for the floor.
•There is an insulation foam pad that is stuck to the floor of the box. This is Thermo King supplied.
•The exhaust is wrapped in an insulating sock. This is Thermo King supplied.
•There is then a cover placed over the exhaust. The cover is supplied by Thermo King for the surface mounting.
•If the exhaust is in a channel then the OEM will supply his own cover, it must be as open as possible to allow for heat dissipation.

Question: How is the exhaust constructed?
All of the tube connections are welded, to provide the best sealing, with the exception of the front tube at the connection to the exhaust inside the engine compartment and the last connection to the muffler. These are connected and clamped with standard exhaust clamps, this will allow for system or unit repair/service accessibility as required.

Question: How is the exhaust routed under the body?
For chassis-less and shallow chassis trailers a channel will have to be formed into the floor of the body This will need to be lined with metal to offer heat shield protection to the three sidesthe body. This will need to be lined with metal to offer heat shield protection to the three sides of the channel .
This example shows the front of the 5th wheel plate has a cut-out for the exhaust. The previous pictures showed a hole cut into the plate. What option will depend on OEM design constraints.

Question: How deep does the channel need to be?
An air gap each side and above the exhaust of 10mm is required for good air g p q gcirculation and heat dissipation.
Therefore the channel would need to be 100mm x 55mm.
Question: How long should the channel be?
The channel can be up to 4.5 metres, this being the maximum distance from the front wall of the trailer bodytrailer body.
The minimum length of channel will be determined by the swing clearance required by the tractor when coupled to the trailer.
30
Max 4.5m
Question: Where can the muffler be positioned? The muffler can be positioned either longitudinally or transversely up to 4.5m from front wall of trailer bodywall of trailer body.
Note: The exhaust can be oriented any way but attention has to be considered for water ingress into the muffler and also the outlet of the muffler owing to fumes and heat.
Question: How heavy is the muffler?21 Kg
31
Question: What are overall muffler dimensions ?
32
Question: What is the area required to maintain a safe distance around the muffler?
Generally the space around the muffler should be a minimum of 75mm with an allowance for air circulation to help dissipate the heat.
If the muffler is to be surrounded by other equipment then more space may be necessary.
What distance from the exhaust outlet should be maintained by surrounding equipment?
600mm should be the clear distance. However some exhaust deposits discolouration may still occur at this distance.
33
Question: What corrosion protection has the system been given?
• All of the tubing and fittings are manufactured with aluminised steel*• All of the tubing and fittings are manufactured with aluminised steel .
• The casing of the muffler is also aluminised steel• The main frame of the muffler is steel with 2 coats of heat & corrosion resistant paint.
Note: Take care when handling the muffler, as with all paint protection misuse can cause the paint to be scratched off.
• The exhaust support brackets and the surface mount exhaust cover is manufactured in Galfan steel and powder coated.
Th h t l i l t d t l• The exhaust clamps are zinc plated steel.
• In addition, any welds that are made will also be treated with high temperature exhaust paint during the installation process.p g p*Aluminised steel is steel that has been hot-dip coated both sides with aluminum-silicon alloy. This process assures a tight metallurgical bond between the steel and its aluminum coating, producing a material with a unique combination of properties possessed neither by steel nor by aluminum alone. It can withstand temperatures up to 800ºC.

temperatures up to 800 C.
Question: What is the temperature of the exhaust? The exhaust temperature varies depending on where it is taken.p p g
The bare surface of the exhaust can be as high as 120ºC, if touched it will cause a skin burn on contact
With the insulation sock attached it can be as high as 90ºC, but if touched the temperature will beWith the insulation sock attached it can be as high as 90 C, but if touched the temperature will be noticed before a skin burn occurs. If held for any length of time a skin burn may occur.
The surface contact of the exhaust at the underside of the trailer body between the insulation pad and the body surface is up to 45ºC with a surface mounted exhaust (chassis type trailer) and up to 65ºC with a channel mounted exhaust (chassis-less type trailer).
35
Question: What is the temperature of the exhaust?
Up to 65ºC with a channel mounted exhaust (chassis-less type trailer).Up to 65 C with a channel mounted exhaust (chassis less type trailer).
The picture below shows the temperature taken in a 30ºC ambient.
36
Question: What is the temperature of the exhaust?
Once mounted inside a ventilated cover the temperature increases by approximately 10ºC

Q ti Wh t h ld th b d b ild l ?Question: What should the body builder supply?• The front covers for the exhaust and any covers for the muffler end where it leaves the body to
muffler. Note: Thermo King cannot supply these because all front walls and body to chassis differ by manufacturer, it would impossible to make one to fit all.
• Mounting points for the muffler.
• Kick strip on the underside of the body.

42
Question: What is different with the installation between this and a standard SLX?
There is no difference between this and the standard SLX with the exception of the additional exhaust .
During the installation there are some noise abatement soft panels that have to be pushed aside to gain access to the mounting bolts.
Question: What additional time is required to install the SLX qWhisper?
To mount the unit takes an additional 15 minutes because of the sound proofing having to be h d id b t t d f th itpushed aside, but not removed from the unit.
The remainder of the exhaust system will take an additional 6hrs to 8hrs over the normal installation time.
Additional time required therefore will be maximum of 8.0hrs.
