Slurry Seal 101
• Slurry Seal is an advanced surface treatment for asphalt pavements
• It’s designed to preserve and extend the life of roadways
• When applied appropriately it can save thousands of dollars per lane mile
• It protects pavement by stopping oxidation
Asphalt Deterioration
• “Seventy percent of all problems that develop with asphalt pavements can be attributed to oxidation of oils in the asphalt binder, and water penetration,” Tammy Sims. P. E. Texas Department of Transportation Pavement Preservation Journal ‐ Winter 2016
Slurry Benefits
• Slurry stops oxidation • It seals asphalt pavements• Increases skid resistance • Creates a dense durable wearing surface • Covers and seals cracks• Restores a long‐lasting black color• Is extremely cost effective
Slurry Is
• An advanced polymer‐modified emulsion• With precisely developed mix designs• Combining: Aggregate, oil, water, polymers, lime and at times certain additives
• A maintenance product – it does not add structure it protects the structure that’s there
• It’s like shingles on a roof• Best applied in residential and lower volume settings
Critical Characteristics
• I mentioned earlier that it save thousands of dollars – and it does
• And there is always a catch…• It must be applied to the proper roadways• The pavements need to be in good condition showing few effects of deterioration
• Some cracks and some patches are fine but those areas must be addressed prior to the slurry application
Slurry vs. Chipseal
• These are the two biggest maintenance products in our business
• They are complimentary products with different applications
• Chipseals provide a more flexible and more coarse surface
• Slurry is a finer less flexible surface
The Most Impressive Part of the Slurry Seal Process is the Crew
• It starts with the Operator • Then flows down through each Man out there• These men are highly trained professionals• They work very hard• They produce amazing results
The Slurry Process
• The process begins with the truck• This machine is one of the most complicated pieces of equipment in the asphalt business
• After a person understands what the truck does you will be even more impressed by the operator
• He manages eleven critical functions all at once and if he makes one mistake it will show up almost immediately
Parts of the Truck
• The hopper• Water tank• Oil tank• Pug mill • The box• The strike‐off rubber• The burlap
Public Notification
• This is one of the most critical parts of the process
• INFORM – before, during and afterward • We are shutting down their streets for around four hours
• If we make mistakes here everyone will hear about it
• The people that manage this for us at A‐1 do an amazing job up front and after the fact
Street Preparation
• This is a critical element• Cracks sealed• Patches done• Thermoplastic removed• Manholes and water valves covered
What’s Happening
• It starts with the aggregate running down the belt
• Lime’s dropped in • Water is injected into the mix• Two tenths of a second later oil’s shot in• The pug mill thrashes it all together • The mix flies into the box and the truck takes off – It all goes very fast
Planning is the Key
• The process is much faster than paving• The streets are closed for three or four hours• The process must be managed to maximize production while minimizing public impact
• A‐1 employs elaborately detailed schedules, maps and notification plans
Microsurfacing
• Microsurfacing is the next step in Slurry Seal• It employs more polymer, larger aggregate, specialized additives that create a chemical break
• It sets up faster allowing traffic more quickly• It’s good for highway applications• It has superior rut filling characteristics
Other Applications
• Parking Lots• Asphalt Trails• Minimac • Cape Seals – Chipseal & Slurry• Microsurfacing with a Chipseal surface
