RecycleMania Recap

This brings a grand total for all events– RecycleMania, ShredMania, and E-Waste –

to over 400,000 pounds diverted from landfills!

Visit recycling.slu.edu for more information about recycling on campus and about what

you can do to divert SLU’s waste stream.

Saint Louis University recently completed the annual RecycleMania competition, an eight-week intercollegiate event that brings awareness to campus sustainability and aims to increase recycling. This was SLU's fifth year participating in the competition, which ran from Feb. 2 to March 29, 2015.

Highlights include: 27,000 pounds of recycled paper from ShredMania, during which members of the SLU community

could bring paper to be shredded. 127,000 pounds of electronic recyclables from the E-Waste drive. 272,150 pounds of single-stream recycling collected on campus, improving from last year's 235,135

pounds.

In May, many SLU staff members volunteered with Campus Kitchen. They helped cook, prepare, and deliver meals to neighborhood homeless shelters, transitional living homes, and low-income families and senior citizens throughout St. Louis. Campus Kitchen welcomes faculty and staff volunteers all year, but especially when students are not on campus. Throughout the month of August, CKSLU will definitely need volunteers! The shifts are as follows: Cooking: Mondays and Wednesdays from 4-6pm Delivery: Monday through Thursday from 1:30-2:30pm

Recognition

Congratulations to the Spring 2015 SLU Stars!

Ten university staff members were recognized for truly being men and women for others at the SLU Stars awards ceremony on March 26. SLU Stars is a peer-to-peer recognition award that recognizes colleagues who demonstrate professionalism and behavior congruent with the University’s Ignation ideals, and whose accomplishments further the mission of Saint Louis University. These individuals regularly go above and beyond to touch the lives of the colleagues, students, clients, friends and family with whom they interact on a daily basis. Their commitment to the mission is not a singular event, but a continuous story of mission in action. SLU Stars are truly men and women for others.

Cara Gitchos, a financial coordinator within Student Financial

Services, has been a resource for new and returning students in the

assistance and guidance of all things financial aid. She helps the

families of SLU see that a SLU education is not only possible, but an

investment that will last a lifetime.

Beth Glauber, administrative assistant for the department of

Psychology, works to solve problems proactively and does not cut

corners. Her presence serves as a strong, but gentle, reminder about

the value of taking time to care for others.

Emily Gunn, an instructor in the School of Nursing, gets excited

about ideas to help others, and this excitement is contagious. Her

impact is positive and palpable to all who come in contact with her.

Stephen Lamkin, assistant director of Student Educational Services,

supports first generation and at-risk students to help them achieve

their academic goals. Stephen addresses complex issues that arise

in the lives of our students and is their biggest cheerleader when

they succeed.

Denise Oppermann, administrative assistant for the Center for

Advanced Dental Education, is the person everyone goes to if they

have a complaint. She is always the first one to work each morning

and has coffee ready for others even though she does not drink it

herself. Denise takes care of others both in and outside of SLU.

Ray Noldon, coordinator in Distribution Services, has a positive spirit

and connects with others in a very genuine way. He is very

passionate about providing good customer service and continually

encourages others on the Distribution Services team to do the same.

Kim Reitter, director of Career Services, embraces knowledge and

continuously tries to find new ideas for addressing students' needs.

She encourages and supports the professional development of her

staff, and her actions foster positive morale and relationships among

her team.

Frank Speck, manager in Comparative Medicine, is a strong advocate

for continuing education. He encourages his staff to share their talents

through a Veterinary Technicians group that visits a local Vet Tech

school to teach about lab animal research. He trusts his staff and does

not interfere with job activities, but is always there to help and offer

guidance.

Mary White, assistant professor in the Physician Assistant Education

department, is actively interested in understanding both medicine and

the world around her better. She is passionate about inter-professional

work and convincing medical practitioners to leave their "silos" and

work as a team for the betterment of the patient. To this end, she has

spearheaded the department's work in the interprofessional

educational program, leading the next generation of healthcare

professionals to be better integrated than our own.

Jeanne Young, administrative assistant for the department of Nutrition

and Dietetics, is always there to roll up her sleeves and get her hands

dirty, sometimes literally by helping with Nutrition and Dietetics

elementary school gardening program. She finds joy in her life and

shares it with those around her. She is actively involved with other staff

members in the Doisy College of Health Sciences and gets to know

most of the personnel in other programs.

Congratulations

Congrats to Ronda Poindexter, RN, BSN, daughter of Sherry D. Wright-Gully of the Department of Physician Assistant Education. Ronda was inducted into the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing on Friday, April 10, 2015. The Honor Society of Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau International is the second-largest nursing organization in the world with approximately 135,000 active members. Ronda is currently pursuing a Master’s Degree to become a Family Nurse Practitioner.

The former high school cheerleader has turned time management into a cultivated skill as this full-time student and Palliative care nurse is married to Darryl Poindexter and together they are the proud parents of two small children Chance (5) and Jasmine (4). Additionally, Ronda is an avid skater and the business owner of Diva Doll House Boutique.

Nick Hebel, sr. application systems analyst with ITS, is proud of his son, Tyler, who recently threw his first college career no-hitter on April 28, 2015 against Calumet College of St. Joseph.

Tyler is a freshmen pitcher for Saint Xavier University in Chicago. He allowed just 5 walks and had 5 strikeouts in the 12-0 win.

Congratulations to Verna Hendricks-Ferguson, Ph.D., RN, CHPPN, associate professor in the School of Nursing. Dr. Hendricks-Ferguson was recognized by SLUSON alum, Deborah Israeli, RN, with an essay in the spring 2015 issue of Cure magazine. The essay details the impact Dr. Hendricks-Ferguson has had in Deborah’s life and why she was honored as an Extraordinary Healer in the oncology educator category.
