Remember Baby Micah
McArthur, star of “Baby
Laughing Hysterically at
Ripping Paper” YouTube
video? Mom Mandi is a SLU
financial coordinator and Marcus
is a Ph.D. student here. (Newslink
coverage).
“Micah is a Billiken baby, and we
couldn‟t be prouder,” says Mandi.
She tells SLULife about her
experience and what Micah‟s up
to now.
“The video first spread through
Facebook, then was tweeted by
T.V. star Alyssa Milano and the
views skyrocketed from fifteen
thousand to 4.5 million in one
week. It had gone viral!
“We were interviewed on KSDK,
Fox 2, „Fox & Friends,‟ the „Today
Show‟ (twice), MSNBC and „Inside
Edition.‟
The „Today Show‟ flew us to New
York City and housed us in a posh
hotel on Central Park. People
recognized Micah at every tourist
site we visited.
“It was a joy to share this
experience with my SLU co-
workers in the Heartland
Center School of Public Health.
“During the viral week, Marcus
sent text updates on radio and
television interviews and the
number of views. Since we‟re like
a family at Salus, they were just
as excited as I was with every
update.
“Everyone joked about us being
invited to the „Today Show, and
low and behold, within a few days,
we got the phone call!
“Looking back on the whole
experience, I‟m amazed by the
impact on viewers. From the
beginning, we received countless
messages about how Micah‟s
hearty laugh lifted their spirits and
brought them joy.
“ A f t e r t h e C h r i s t c h u r c h
earthquake, one New Zealander
wrote that they had been
searching for missing family
members and the video brought a
much needed smile.
“The Today Show segment
producer even started crying
when Micah smiled at her.
“In St. Louis, people request
pictures with our little baby—at
the grocery store, zoo, mall,
everywhere!
“We‟re so thankful that Micah has
made a meaningful and positive
impact throughout the world—
before the age of one!
“What‟s next for Micah? The
YouTube views continue to rise
(now 17 million), and he‟s working
with a St. Louis talent agent to get
a modeling gig.
“We‟ve been in
school during our
e n t i r e 1 0 - y e a r
marriage, and so we
hope to build a
college fund for our
baby as well.
“Coming up this
weekend, „Inside
Edition‟ is flying us
out to New York City
to be on a show with
o t h e r l a u g h i n g
YouTube babies. The

continues!”

Madrid Faculty and Staff—and Children!
—Await the Arrival of the Easter Bunny
If a villain’s heart is as big as his head, can he really be a villain? In the animated Megamind, a blue alien with a giant head (Will Ferrell) is sent to Earth as a baby to find his destiny. At the same time, an alien infant with perfect human cuteness (Brad Pitt) is sent here to do the same. Big Blue lands in prison and is raised by convicts, where Pitt’s character gets a rich family and becomes the hero Metro Man. Big Blue thinks he’ll fare better as a villain with his loyal sidekick, talking fish “Minion” (David Cross), he becomes Metro Man’s nemesis: Megamind. Tina Fey adds to the fun as perky reporter Roxanne Ritchie. Megamind, Metro Man and Roxanne’s cameraman Hal (Jonah Hill), are all enamored with her. Megamind and Metro Man engage in endless battles, which Megamind mostly loses. Until, he doesn’t… There’s plenty of good character banter, and Megamind’s mispronunciations (“shool” for “school) are humorous. The visuals are fast-paced, and songs like “Bad to the Bone” and “A Little Less Conversation” will move you.
Adults will find Megamind entertaining, and very young ones can get lost easily. Ultimately though, Megamind is worth the rental to spend some time with your kiddos: FOUR BILLIKENS!

Internship (DI) Class of
2011 has had a busy year
pursuing professional
practice skills and using
these skills for the health
and wellness of the
community.
Interns work with several
St. Louis organizations
including the Give Kids a
S m i l e ( G K A S )
organization, Trailnet and
BJC Healthcare.
GKAS provides free
comprehensive dental
care to the underserved
twice annually at SLU and
DIs provide games,
screening and nutrition
education.
Through Trailnet, an
environmental non-profit
dedicated to supporting
physical activity, the DIs
participate in school
walking programs and
“green” events.
BJC hosts several large
community health fairs
wher e t he i nter ns
participate in health
screenings and nutrition
counseling.
T h e i n t e r n s a l s o
participate in school
family days, provide
cooking demonstrations
and write community
newsletters to increase
public awareness.
In addition, each intern
rotates through a student-
operated food service,
Fresh Gatherings Cafe,
where they organize,
advertise and produce a
theme meal using local
and seasonal foods.
The interns also work with
departmental grants using
SLU and community
gardens to improve
nutrition in children in the
area.
T h e s e c o m m u n i t y
intervention projects are
targeted at improving
dietary habits in children
and reducing the epidemic
of childhood obesity. The
exposure to new foods,
hands-on experience
growing fruits and
vegetables and nutrition
lessons improve children’s
attitude toward healthy
eating.
T h e s e s e r v i c e
opportunities support the
SLU’s mission while
giving the dietetic interns
essential practical
experience.
The class of 2011
has had a busy,
rewarding year, and
is anticipating
graduation in May!!

What people are saying:
“It was great to hear the instructor sum up the key factors and teach them in a quick and easy-to-understand way. Trying to figure things out on my own is a frustrating process - so I appreciate these courses!”
“This is knowledge I can bring back to my department to help solve a problem we have been dealing with for a while!”
“Filters, turning conversations off, forwarding, invitations, muting, etc. etc. I thought I understood Google e-mail--then I went to class and learned several very useful tips and have a real understanding of the things that work for me -and the things that will not!
“I didn't know about the variety of questions you could include in a Google Form and how they could help me sort student data, so that was very useful!”

Management Operations
staff participated in a
special "Have a Heart" event on
February 9th sponsored by the PMO
Special Events Committee.
Staff bought personalized Valentines and
balloons for co-workers with proceeds
going to the Independence Center—a St.
Louis non-profit that helps adults with
serious, chronic mental illness live and
work in the community, independently and
with dignity. It was clear that PMO staff
have BIG hearts!
DID YOU KNOW? Adults need muscle-strengthening activities on two or more days a week
that work all major muscle groups (legs, hips, back, abdomen, chest, shoulders, and arms).
MUSCLE-STRENGTHENING—WHAT COUNTS? Work to the point where it’s hard to do another
repetition without help. A repetition is one complete movement of an activity, like lifting a weight
or doing a sit-up. Try to do 8 to 12 repetitions per activity—that counts as one set. To gain even
more benefits, do two or three sets.
SOME STRENGTHENING DEAS:
Lift weights
Use resistance bands
Use body weight for resistance (push-ups, sit-ups)
Yoga or Pilates
