St. Anne’s KSKJ Lodge #170 has been keeping busy with the start of this

warmer weather. It seems like we skipped right over spring and jumped right into summer! As

always, our Easter Egg Hunt was a huge success, with over 30 children participating! KSKJ’s

Bowling Tournament was truly a blast. Alas, the “Pin Queens” team of Theresa Krampac, Barbara

Krampac, Vicky Krampac Herold and Sheena Litt didn’t win any trophies, but we sure had A LOT

of laughs and a great time. You’d be surprised to know that Theresa is quite the bowler! Our Join

Hands Day, held on Saturday, June 7th was also not only productive, but super fun as well. We

spent the day enjoying each other’s company as we cleaned the grotto for the Franciscan Fathers.

A heartfelt thanks to all who helped participate in this year’s Join Hands Day. We are busy

preparing for our annual picnic, which will be held Sunday, July 27th after mass. We invite all of

you to join us for delicious food, cold drinks, and great people! We also want to again inform

everyone of our Matching Funds Luncheon which will be held on Sunday, September 14th, at the

Slovenian Cultural Center. St. Stephen’s Lodge will be joining with us to help Make-A-Wish come

true for a child in Illinois. We hope everyone can attend and help make a difference in the life of

a deserving child. Big news, folks: St. Anne’s KSKJ Lodge #170 has a Facebook page! It’s still a

little rough around the edges, but join us to stay up-to-date on the latest happenings of the lodge.

On behalf of the board of St. Anne’s, we wish you a wonderful summer, and look forward to

seeing you all at our upcoming events!

St. Ann’s Join Hands Day—Hvala lepa to St. Ann’s and their clean-up crew!

CONGRATULATIONS to our Gospodična 2014, Claudia Zerdin. Claudia is the daughter of

John & Milena Zerdin and the granddaughter of Metod & Ivanka Zerdin and Joseph & Frančiška

Gorsic. John is the long-time treasurer of the SCC. Claudia has been involved in our Slovenian commu-

nity since she was a little girl and has performed at many of our Center’s events, playing the violin with

her mother, Milena and sister, Julia. Congratulations to the Zerdin Family!

Another successful school year has come and gone at the Slomšek Slovenian School. During the year, the students and teachers participate in formal classes as well as many fun activities that help the students learn about the Slovenian culture and language. When walking through the halls on a typical school day, you may hear the Srčki class singing a new song, or the Adult class identifying new vocabulary words, or the young adults reciting poetry with their teachers. After class, many of the Čebelice (pre-k thru 1st grade) and Nagelj (2nd thru 7th) students are found on the stage in the main hall learning new folk dance techniques and dances.

The students learn about the Slovenian culture through many activities that are held throughout the year. They participate in many of the celebrations at the center, including the SCC Anniversary celebration and Koline. P. Metod visits the school on several occasions and provides instruction in various topics integrating our faith with the lessons that are learned in the school. The school also hosts annual performances for Sveti Miklavž and concludes the year with a Mother’s Day performance that not only honors our mothers, but also highlights all of the different topics that were learned throughout the school year.

The school is fortunate to have many quality teachers that volunteer their time and skills. Because of their dedication, we are able to have a successful school program. We are always looking for motivated individuals to assist with classes and activities. Please let us know if you would like to help or teach a class. We are currently in need for teachers and aides for some of our classes. The Slovenian School Board would like to welcome its newest member, Christina Martincic. We look forward to working with her and everyone involved in the school to strive for another successful year.

It is through the support and generosity of members of the community that we are able to provide a better learning experience for all students and teachers. We would like to extend special thanks to all of the members of our community for their continued support and commitment to Slomšek Slovenian School!

We would like to encourage you to participate in Slovenian School! We offer many different teaching methodolo-gies for second languages that are similar to what your students experience in school today – with the added advantage of making new Slovenian friends! Our educational materials consist of workbooks, books, CD’s, etc. directly from Slovenia. We use microphone enabled laptops as supplemental tools allowing the students to repeat vocabulary and lessons while giving them the ability to playback their own voices.

During the school year, stop by and visit us on Saturdays from 10:00 am until 1:00 pm. If you would like more information, please email us at [email protected] or leave a message at the Center 630-243-0670. Don’t forget to look for us at some of the events throughout the year! Come visit us at the Slovenian School booth at the SCC picnic in August and join us for the Slovenian School family picnic on September 6th!
