MIt happens every year. We break out the green beer, the parades, the four leaf clovers, the Guiness, the corned beef, and a whole host of other festivities to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. But beware...all that green beer can cost you a lot of green… (as we’ve written before, if not handled properly DUIs can cost upwards of $15,000 dollars).

Florida is still a driving state; you need a car to get you from point A to point B at least 90% of the time. Bear in mind that the cops are well aware of that fact, and on holidays that center around drinking, they have a lower tolerance than normal for drunk driving.

They’ll be out in full force ready to stop anyone who seems even the slightest bit impaired. So think about taking a Lyft, Uber, taxi, bus, or train this year so you can enjoy the festivities with your friends and family without worrying.

If you are planning on driving, here a a few tips for the road:

A If stopped by a police officer, remain polite and as calm as possible.

A Do not try to talk your way out of a DUI (this never goes well!)

A Avoid saying anything to indicate that you drank any alcohol (“I only had a couple of beers officer…” never goes well and is an admission against your own interest.)

A You are not required to do the field sobriety exercises.

A There are ways to get a hardship license if you refuse the breath test.

A If you are arrested for DUI, call an attorney as soon as possible.

Be safe, have fun, and may the luck of the Irish be with you.

Summer with. . . Hypnotherapy?

Summer is fast approaching, and with it swimsuit season. Many people’s minds are turning to diet and exercise regimes to get in the best shape possible. But we sat down with Licensed Mental Health Counselor, Certified Hypnotherapist, EMDR Trained Therapist, and Certified Addictions Professional, Jill Bershad, who’s helped her clients find an alternative approach to weight loss, hypnotherapy.

Q What is hypnotherapy?

A Hypnotherapy is the practice of Hypnosis for therapeutic purposes. Hypnosis is a state of altered awareness in which the subconscious is more open and receptive to suggestions that are given.

Q How does it work?

A Essentially, Hypnosis is believed to tap into the subconscious. When hypnotized, individuals enter a trance-like state with a heightened sense of focus and attention. Hypnosis is a highly effective tool because it is believed that 95% of brain activity is beyond our conscious awareness. Only 5% of our cognitive abilities (decisions, emotions, actions, behavior) is conscious whereas the remaining 95% is generated in a

How Many Green Beers Will Put You Over the Limit? (One drink = 12 ounces of green beer)

You don’t need the luck of the Irish to be successful. Discover the power of positive thinking and use it to your advantage.

I regularly feature inspirational quotes on our social media pages. Not only are they great daily reminders that inspire us to reach for more, but they’re also important in training our minds to believe that we can accomplish anything.

I’m not saying that positive thinking alone will get you to where you want to be (of course there will be hard work involved) but it will help you overcome the obstacles you face on along the road to achieving what you want.

When you’re tired, or you find yourself in a difficult situation on the road to where you want to be, usually that’s when negative thoughts start to flood your mind. You get down on yourself, and convince yourself you’re

not going to make it. Your motivation wanes, and the situation seems even more impossible. Those are the times when positive thinking can be a game changer. It can make the difference between persevering and quitting.

We have to remind ourselves of our worth. For every negative trait you identify, remind yourself of at least three positive ones. For every bad situation, find one positive aspect, even if it’s just that it will be over soon.

And remember, difficult roads often lead to beautiful destinations. Don’t quit!

subconscious manner. Because the subconscious mind is targeted during hypnosis and we are mostly driven by the subconscious, people find great success with this type of therapy. Hypnosis can work for almost anyone, though some people are easier to hypnotize than others. The most important thing to increase the likelihood of entering a trance-like state is having rapport with your therapist. It is also important to note, contrary to popular belief, you are still very much in control while in the hypnotic trance and and you won’t say or do anything that you don’t want to.

Q What can it be used for?

A Hypnotherapy can be used for almost anything at all. The possibilities are endless. Some of the things I have used hypnosis for with my clients are managing anxiety, ego-strengthening (confidence and esteem building), weight loss, smoking cessation, addiction, test/performance anxiety, fear of flying, fear of blood, hoarding, etc.

Q What happens during a typical session?

A I create a relaxing and peaceful environment. I use a diffuser with essential oils, play meditation music quietly in the background and turn the lights down low. Clients are given the option to sit up or lay down, whatever they are most comfortable with and what will help them achieve the greatest sense of calm. I guide them with verbal cues as well as with their breath. I use several relaxation techniques to help help them enter a trance, including progressive muscle relaxation and visualization. Suggestions targeting their desired outcome are provided throughout.

Q How can hypnotherapy be used to aid in diet and weight loss?

A Suggestions are used to motivate clients to achieve their desired weight through addressing emotional eating. We know that many use food as a source of comfort, possibly when bored, anxious, sad, mad, etc. This is known as “eating our feelings”. While under a hypnotic trance, while the mind is open and receptive, suggestions are made to cope with these feelings using healthy alternatives. In addition, portion control, healthy food choices, visualizing themselves at their ideal weight, exercise, and a healthy water intake is addressed. Once suggestions are provided, and because the subconscious mind is extremely powerful, the suggestions become deeply embedded in the subconscious. The suggestions continue to grow stronger by the day and

voilà….you are that much closer to achieving the body you want for summer!
