““SECULARISM & SECULARISM &

SECULARIZATION”SECULARIZATION”

“Secular” – from Latin saeculum carries a dual

connotation of (1) time and (2) space; therefore referring to the

‘now’ or ‘present’ of it, and the location to the ‘world’ or

‘worldly’ sense of it.




“Secularization” is defined as:

the deliverance of man “first from religious and then from

metaphysical control over his reason and his language”[1]

it is “the loosing of the world from religious and quasi-religious

understandings of itself, the dispelling of all closed world views,

the breaking of all supernatural myths and sacred symbols…





the ‘defatalization of history’

the discovery by man that he has been left with the world on his

hands, and he can no longer blame fortune or the furies for what

he does with it…;





it is man turning his attention away from the worlds beyond and

towards this world and this time.”




“Secularization” It encompasses:

not only political and social aspects of life, but also inevitably the

cultural, for it denotes “the disappearance of religious

determination of the symbols of cultural integration.”




“Secularization” It implies:

“a historical process, almost certainly irreversible, in which

society and culture are delivered from tutelage to religious

control and closed metaphysical world views.”




Note to distinguish:

“Secularism” is the ‘ideology’

whereas ‘Secularization’, the ‘process’.





The integral components in the dimensions of Secularization are:

[a] The “disenchantment” of nature,

- the freeing of nature from its religious overtones” (Max Weber)





[b] The “desacralization” of politics,

- the abolition of sacral legitimation of political power and authority,

which is the prerequisite of political change and hence also social change

allowing for the emergence of the historical process.”





[c] The “deconsecration” of values.

- the rendering transient and relative all cultural creations and every

value system which for them includes religion and worldviews having

ultimate and final significance, so that in this way history, the future, is

open to change, and man is free to create the change and immerse

himself in the ‘evolutionary’ process”

that destroys us. Yet the fact is that they know nothing about that destroys us. Yet the fact is that they know nothing about

“Allah's is the kingdom of the heavens and the earth, and on

the Day when the Hour (of Resurrection) shall come to pass, the

followers of falsehood shall be in utter loss (MUB-TWI-LUN).”

(Qur’an: Jaathiya: 45: 27)

the noun ‘ “mubtwil” derived from the verb ‘

abtwala” – meaning ‘he made a false [or vain] claim’, or

‘tried to disprove the truth [of something]’, or ‘to reduce

[something] to nothing’, or ‘to prove [it] to be of no account’,

or ‘null and void’, or ‘unfounded’ ‘false’ or ‘ spurious’ etc.

irrespective of whether the object is true or false, authentic

or spurious, valid or unfounded .

(Lisaan al-’Arab and Taaj-al’Arus)

“As for those who believe and act righteously, their Lord shall

admit them to His Mercy. That indeed is the manifest triumph.”

(Qur’an: Jaathiya: 45: 30)

““Were My Signs not rehearsed to you? Were My Signs not rehearsed to you? But you waxed But you waxed

All the Praises belongs to Allah, All the Praises belongs to Allah,

Lord (Sustainer) of the worlds. Lord (Sustainer) of the worlds.

Du’a taught by my mentor, al-Ustaz Muhammad bin Muhammad Sa’id Semarang, as well as my other traditional Asaatizah.May Allah reward them all with every goodness., and grant upon us, our parents , family and them, His Mercy and His Forgiveness.

WA- ‘ALAA – AA - LIHI – WA –WA- ‘ALAA – AA - LIHI – WA –SWSWOH- BIHI – OH- BIHI – WA-MAN – TA-BI- ’A-HU – WA – WAA - LAHWA-MAN – TA-BI- ’A-HU – WA – WAA - LAH

and upon his Household and Companions, and upon his Household and Companions,

and all who follow and are loyal to him and all who follow and are loyal to him

(and support him in his cause).(and support him in his cause).



ROB-BANAA- AN-FA’-NAA -BI-MAA- ‘AL-LAM-TA-NAA

O our Lord! Make us to benefit from what You have taught us.

ROB-BI –’AL-LIM- NAL- LA-DzEE- YAN-FA- ‘U-NA

O Lord! Teach us whatever that is beneficial for us.


ROB-BI –FAQ-QIH-NAA -WA -FAQ-QIH – AH-LA-NAA

O Lord! Grant upon us profound understanding,

(as also grant upon) our family members..


WA –QO-RAA-BAA-TIN-LA-NAA -FEE -DEE-NI-NAA

MA- ’A -AH-LIL-QUTw-RI- UN-THA - WA DzA-KAR

And also to those in the Faith who are close to us ,

Amongst fellow citizens, the female and the male.


ALLAA-HUM-MAJ- ’AL-NAA - HAA-DEE-NAA - MUH-TA-DEEN

O Allah! Make us to be people who guide (others) and

who are (always) guided (by Your Guidance) .


GHOY-RA- DwAA-L-LEE-NA WA - LAA- MU-DwIL-LEENGHOY-RA- DwAA-L-LEE-NA WA - LAA- MU-DwIL-LEEN

Not of those who are astray and who lead people astray.Not of those who are astray and who lead people astray.


ALLAA-HUM - MAH-DI-NAA BI – HU-DAAK

O Allah! Guide us all with Your Guidance.


WAJ-’AL-NAA MIM-MAN - YU-SAA - RI-’U – FEE - RI-DwAAK

And make us people who hasten towards what pleases You.


WA- LAA TUWAL-LI-NAA - WA-LIY-YAN SI-WAAKWA- LAA TUWAL-LI-NAA - WA-LIY-YAN SI-WAAK

And do not let us be protected (by others) except And do not let us be protected (by others) except

only with Your Protection (as our Guardian).only with Your Protection (as our Guardian).


WA- LAA TAJ-’AL –NAA - MIM-MAN - KHAA-LAFA WA- LAA TAJ-’AL –NAA - MIM-MAN - KHAA-LAFA

AM-RAKA WA- ‘A- SwAAKAM-RAKA WA- ‘A- SwAAK

And do not make us to be of those who differ from And do not make us to be of those who differ from

Your command and are disobedient towards You.Your command and are disobedient towards You.


WA- WA- HHAS - BU-NALLAA-HU - WA NI’-MAL - WA-KEELAS - BU-NALLAA-HU - WA NI’-MAL - WA-KEEL

And sufficient is Allah for us, for He is the Best Protector.And sufficient is Allah for us, for He is the Best Protector.


WA- LAA – WA- LAA – HHAU- LA -WA –LAA -QUW-WATA - IL-LAA AU- LA -WA –LAA -QUW-WATA - IL-LAA

BIL-LAA – HIL - ‘ALEE-YIL - ‘A-ZEEMBIL-LAA – HIL - ‘ALEE-YIL - ‘A-ZEEM

And there is no power nor strength except with Allah And there is no power nor strength except with Allah

The Most High, the Most Esteem.The Most High, the Most Esteem.


WA- SwOL-LALLAA-HU- ‘ALAA SAY-DI-NAA - MUHAMMADIN

WA ‘ALAA – AA-LIHI -WA SwOH-BI-HI - WA-SAL-LAM

And salutations of Allah and Peace be upon our

Leader Muhammad, and upon His household

and Companions .
