What is Ufi?Who aWho are?

• An independent charity dedicated to increasing

delivery of adult vocational learning through

digital technology

• Projects that create change to scale up digital

vocational learning for adults in the UK

• Working to bring vocational learning to more

people, in more places, more of the time

Page 4: slides from webinars

What do you mean??

• Adults are anyone over 16

• We don’t fund higher education projects

• We don’t fund schools projects

• Vocational learning leading to employment

• Skills specific to the workplace

• Literacy and numeracy skills

• But not generic job seeking skills

• Adult lifetime learning, at work, in communities,

at home and in formal learning environments

Page 5: slides from webinars

What do you mean by digital

technology??

• Digital technology can include:

• Networks (the web, cloud)

• Software and content (e-learning, adaptive learning, simulation,

gamification, e-books, video, etc.)

• Hardware (desktops, tablets, mobile devices, wearables)

• Networks and mechanisms for mass

penetration, rather than specific devices

Learning Without Walls

We call our strategy ‘learning without walls’ because

we think that digital technology can really change how

people learn and develop skills for work.

Page 7: slides from webinars

Why is it important?

The UK needs to

increase the number

of people with the

right skills for work

Digital technologies

can change how

people learn and build

their skills

Ensure vocational

learning becomes an

attractive market for

investment

What are we doing?Who aWho

are Ufi?re Ufi?• ‘Learning without walls’ – how digital tech can change

vocational learning and skills development

• lnvesting in scalable projects that have real impact in

adult vocational learning

• Working with learners, industries and communities to

create new digital solutions for adult learning

• Creating a community of learning developers and

providers working at the cutting edge of digital tech

How we work

Ufi funding will be focused in three areas:

Seeding the market Market testing

products

Large scale partnerships

near to market

Page 10: slides from webinars

Our projectsRAPID ENGLISH – the 'Priorities' frequency-based learning platform

Using a revolutionary combination of linguistic know-how, big-data and

machine learning to make course content more effective. Ufi funding is

helping use real world content to develop new mechanisms to build

bespoke language profiles for subjects, course materials and learners. By

overcoming language barriers which preventing effective communication,

learners and educators can focus on the vocabulary that underpins specific

skills and training issues, leading to more effective outcomes.

Our projects

NANOSIMBOX – Interactive Scientific

Nano Simbox is a molecular dynamics platform. Trial have shown that it can

engage a wider range of learners than traditional science teaching and make

tricky science concepts more accessible. It can deliver major science teaching.

The project is using Ufi funding to develop and test content aligned with the

Applied Science BTEC and mobile device delivery for remote learning; and is

already talking to employers about using the tool for workplace training.

Our projects

TARGET - European Innovation Ltd

TARGET is a full commercial trial of wearable technology in a manufacturing

environment. Wearable technology (in this case smart glasses) is a new area

which offers significant opportunity. When switched off the glasses can form a

standard pair of safety glasses, when switched on the twin heads up display

screens built into the glass deliver interactive content directly to an individual as

they look at a specific machine.

Our projectsSAFER FOOD SERIES – British Hospitality Association

SAFER FOOD SERIES #1 is a pilot project which aims to test whether an app-

based game is an effective way of delivering learning to employees in the

hospitality sector, focusing particularly on young people employed in SMEs.

Using cross-contamination as a theme, the game aims to teach learners how to

prepare, cook and serve burgers in a professional kitchen setting. Orders

become increasingly complex through the game, in order to simulate

create pressure points which would in a real life setting.

Our projectsCitizen Maths

UFI Charitable Trust funds this free, open course to give people the ability to

use maths with confidence in their work and social lives. Online provision

gives students privacy and more flexibility, providing courses they can access

in their own time and at a pace that suits them. Many people have negative

feelings about maths after struggling with it at school. These adults are the

target of the innovative Citizen Maths service which aims to help them develop

skills they missed out on at school and overcome barriers to learning maths.

Manufacturing Skills Fund

• Upskilling within the manufacturing sector,

particular within SMEs, is not keeping pace with

global industry development

• Digitisation of manufacturing is not being

matched by innovation in vocational skills

development

• Digital solutions can deliver effective training for

individuals

Page 16: slides from webinars

What does Ufi want to achieve?

• Stimulate the market for digital vocational

technology in the manufacturing sector

• Encourage collaboration

• Demonstrators to stimulate further innovation

and take up

Page 17: slides from webinars

#ManufacturingSkillsFund

• £50,000 to £150,000 for projects lasting up to 18

months, which are:

• Collaborative, involving employers and digital learning experts

• Particularly aimed at SMEs in the manufacturing supply chain

• Deliver against skills and business priorities in manufacturing

• Clearly identify their target audience and expected impact on

learners and on business productivity

• Realistic and deliverable within the timeframe

• Have the potential to scale up for maximum impact

Page 18: slides from webinars

What are Ufi looking for?

Innovative digital learning projects with potential to:

• Address current and future skills shortages in technical skills.

• Technical skills such as robotics/maintenance; leadership and

management skills; systems and process skills including quality tools and

new product introduction.

• Test ways to use digital technology to develop vocational skills.

• Blended learning, learning in shared industrial settings, smartphones ,

wearable technology and the application of VR and AR technology in

vocational learning

• Use digital technology to bring new talent into manufacturing by

upskilling and providing bridges to employment.

• Including skills for job-seekers and re-skilling people already in work to start

new careers in manufacturing

• Schools based projects

• University or research projects

• Basic digital skills – using Office, getting online

• Underpinning ‘life skills’ – such as CV building

or time management

• Standard content development

Page 21: slides from webinars

What can you expect if you’re

successful?

• Part of a cohort of exciting voctech projects

• Access to a network of experts – a tailored

approach
