‘Set forth your case,’ says the LORD; ‘bring your proofs,’ says the King of Jacob. ‘Let them bring them, and tell us

what is to happen. Tell us the former things, what they are, that we may consider them, that we may know their

outcome; or declare to us the things to come.’ (Isaiah 41:21–22)

Dispensational Premillennialism

One of the four millennial views discussed in the previous slide set for Chapter 3 of The Last Shofar! is the Dispensational Premillennial view.

This view, the dominant view currently among evangelical Christians, had its beginnings about 150 years ago as a systematic doctrine of biblical understanding, particularly regarding end-time events and the return of Jesus Christ.

We will examine the origins, teachings and impact of this view as well as discuss the Pre-Tribulation Rapture (Pre-Trib Rapture) that is integral to this view.

v  Evolutionary thinking

First, Let’s Look at . . .

The chaotic conditions of the 1800s produced confusion and uncertainty in the lives of the people. This confusion and uncertainty was further compounded with two world wars and a global depression in the 1900s.

Without question, a Dispensational Premillennial view provided meaning and understanding to the surrounding chaos and suffering, and a clear understanding of an “ultimate escape” in a Pre-Tribulation Rapture for the church.

For these reasons, and perhaps others, a Pre-Trib Dispensational Premillennial view is solidified in the beliefs of many evangelical Christians.

The establishment of Israel as a nation in 1948, with the Jews back in the land, only reinforced the awareness that the return of Jesus was “just around the corner.”

This systematic eternity-to-eternity view of the Bible gave assurance that the coming of Jesus to rapture His Church could happen at any time, i.e., an imminent return.

v  Promoted by John Nelson Darby, former Church of England priest and Edward Irving, Scottish preacher, about 1830.

How it all started . . .

v  A formal doctrine for a secret rapture (the Pre-Tribulation Rapture) was taught by Darby and Irving, using sources dating back to the 14th century. A Dispensational Premillennial understanding of the Bible was an inseparable part of this teaching.

v  They aggressively taught their views at Bible conferences throughout England and Scotland.

v  Many conservative theological seminaries, Bible colleges and some church denominations such as the Assemblies of God adopted Darby’s teaching.

v  Between 1840 and 1870, they made several trips to America, influencing key evangelical leaders—C. I. Schofield (Schofield Reference Bible) and Dwight L. Moody.

In Summary, What Does This View Teach? Pre-Tribulation Dispensational Premillennialism—looking at each part of the descriptive name, in reverse order:

v  Dispensational – defines distinct historical administrations of God toward His people, Israel and the Church, maintaining a clear distinction between the two, even in the period of the end times.

As the Church is raptured to heaven and glorified prior to the “tribulation,” Israel remains through the “tribulation,” being delivered, redeemed, and restored to a place of honor during the millennial reign of Christ.

Book  Page  62

v  Premillennialism – end-time view that the physical Second Coming of Christ comes before a literal 1,000-year reign of Christ on earth (the Millennium) at the conclusion of the 70th Week of Daniel.

v  Pre-Tribulation – The “Pre-Trib” is the most distinctive part of the Dispensational Premillennial view. This tenet defines the rapture of the Church as occurring before, but close to, the period of the “tribulation” referred to by Jesus in Matthew 24.

However, unique to this view is the understanding that the entire 70th Week of Daniel, the final seven years of the end times, is called the Great Tribulation, i.e., the Day of God’s Wrath, the Day of Jacob’s Troubles as described in Daniel 9:24-27—a time the Church will not experience.

A more in-depth examination of the Pre-Tribulation view is covered In Appendix I, “Pre-Trib vs. Pre-Wrath Rapture – Making the Biblical Case, in the book, The Last Shofar!

However, Not All Agree! v  Some view the Pre-Trib Dispensational Premillennial assumptions as not clearly derived from a careful exegetical approach to Scripture, i.e., some tenets are a “reading into Scripture” (eisegesis), derived by inference.

v   Some view themselves as holding a Pre-Tribulation position but place the timing of the Rapture at the mid-point of the 70th Week of Daniel or slightly beyond, as do those who hold to a Pre-Wrath Rapture position.

v  Some hold to a Post-Tribulation Rapture, occurring after the 70th Week of Daniel and, therefore, would not agree with the Pre-Tribulation position.

Book  Page  66

Page 13: Slide Presentation The Last Shofar! - Truth in Scripture · Dispensational Premillennialism One of the four millennial views discussed in the previous slide set for Chapter 3 of The

v  Some disagree that the entire seven-year period at the end of time is the time of God’s wrath, i.e., the Day of the Lord. They see 2 Thessalonians 2:3 as teaching that the Day of the Lord doesn’t begin until after the man of lawlessness is revealed—at the mid-point of the 70th Week of Daniel.

v  Some question the Pre-Trib Rapture teaching that Christ could come at anytime, i.e., an imminent return, without the need of any further prophetic fulfillment.

1.  How did the Pre-Tribulation Rapture view begin, and why is it so popular today among many

evangelical Christians?

2.  How would you describe the basic tenets of this view? How does this teaching relate to the 70th Week of Daniel? 3.  Should this view of the Pre-Trib Rapture be in error, what would be the obvious impact for you

and the Church?

Let’s Talk About It

In the next slide set, based on Chapter 5, “The Day Will Finally Arrive – The Day of the Lord,” we will see if the Pre-Tribulation Rapture understanding can be supported biblically.

Looking Ahead . . . We have seen that much of what distinguishes the Dispensational Premillennial view is its teaching about a Pre-Tribulation Rapture and its understanding of the Day of the Lord (God’s wrath) as occupying the entire 70th Week of Daniel—the last seven years of the end times.
