• Stage 1• Mixed thoughts• Hallucinations (falling)• Brain waves still rapid

• Stage 2• Still easy to wake up• Brain waves are continuing to slow down

• Stage 3&4• Slowest brain waves• Blood flow decreases to the brain• Growth Hormone emitted• Immune function increase• We need this stage to feel well rested.

Newborn babies need 16-18 hours of sleep each day!

Dreams & the Stages of Sleep

REM (rapid eye movement)• Dream stage• We need this stage to feel well rested• Paralysis• Brain waves are rapid

Sleep Apnea• Causes: Obstructed airway, air can’t flow into

or out of nose and mouth• Effects: Very sleepy through out the day lack concentration, irritable, memory difficulties,

falling asleep at workTreatment: Dental device, CPAP

• Continuous Positive Air Pressure

Insomnia: • Transient-only lasts a few nights• Short Term-lasts 2-3 weeks• Chronic-lasts more than 1 monthTreatment: Consider lifestyle changes possibly a sleeping pill

Narcolepsy• Affects part of brain that regulates sleep and

awake states• Sudden onset of REM• Cataplexy- Sudden loss of muscle controlTreatment: Medication

Kleine-Levin Syndrome• A rare syndrome• Periodic excessive sleepiness lasting several

weeks• Typically the patient has other drives increase

(eating, drinking…)Treatment: No treatment, patients cope the

best they can. Hopefully the patient will “out grow” the disorder
