Secret Triplet Technique (L#84)

Your Action Plan

Before you even start with this lesson I want you to familiarize yourself with some of the best slap bass players there is. Listen and see if they're using the same technique I'm demonstrating within the lesson. Chances are they most probably will be, and if not they'll be using some variation of it.

1. Work through the lesson. If you have any issues whentrying to play this riff it will probably be one or a few oftheses check points.

a. You're not rotating your arm correctly. Remember that thecorrect arm rotation is similar to grabbing a doorknob androtating the arm to open it.

b. You're not getting the stereotypical slap sound. Checkthat your thumb is hitting the string just over the edge ofthe fingerboard. The slap sound is created by the stringbouncing off the frets. It's worth taking into account thatif your action is too high the strings won't be able toconnect with the frets.

c. There seems to be lots of unwanted strings ringing outduring the riff. You need to look at your muting.Remember that the fretting hand is also a big part ofeffective muting. Break the riff down into small bite sizechunks as I do within the video tutorial and work throughit slowly looking for which are your problematic notes.Once you can recognize which notes are ringing out youan take action and readjust your muting.

2. Now I want you to compose your own riff using this triplettechnique. As a challenge I'd prefer it if you aim tocompose the riff in a key other than E.
