What is going on in the

refugees camps?

Approximately 235,000 Syrian refugees are

presently living in the cities Erbil, Sulymaniya and

Duhok from Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG

of Iraq . Due to the conflict in Syria, the number of

refugees is increasing rapidly and daily, and the

situation in Syria indicates that at least one million

Syrian children refugees are scattered throughout

the region.

the beginning of the conflict, thecal athourities in collaboration withternational NGOs were able tospond to the needs of the refugees

y providing them with basic services,

rotection, and assistance. The basicving conditions inside the camps areoubling; refugees face a new, hostilenvironment.

What is going on in the

refugees camps?

KRG is short of resources and capacity to meet the huge needs of the refugee

children (such as food, public services, healthcare, and education), to integratethem with the host community, and to build the bridges between them and the

local community both in the camp and in the main cities, requiring the help of the

international community to meet the refugee children’s needs.

The children are the

most vulnerable

population.

Not only because of the

lack of resources,

education, and services,

but also because of the

impact of violence and

war in their lives. The

refugee children need animmediate response and

action to provide them

with a basic, safe, and

comfortable environment.

Principles

Realities

Children areindividuals.

Children areneither the

possessions of parents nor of the

state.

Children start life astotally dependent

beings. Childrenmust rely on adultsfor the nurturing

and guidance theyneed to grow

towards independence.

The actions, orinactions, of government

impact childrenmore stronglythan any other

group in society.

Children'sviews are

rarely heardand rarely

considered inthe political

process.

Many changes in

society have adisproportionate, andoften negative, impacton children, which is

particularlydevastating in

situations of armedconflict and other

emergencies.

Social researchfindings show thatchildren's earliest

experiencessignificantly

influence theirfuture

development.

The healthy

development of children is crucialto the future well-

being of anysociety.

This project shares the principles and considerations established by the Declaration of

the Rights of the Child and from the Convention on the Rights of the Child, which

specifically state that children need special attention in order to protect their rights

because:

What do we believe in?

What has to be done?It is very important to build the local community’s capacity to meetits own needs, and to enable it to help the refugee children andmake them feel safe and secure. Refugee children are suffering themost in the current crisis from the severe environment and culturaldiversity and the most vulnerable in the Syrian armed conflict. Boththe Declaration of the Rights of Child and the Convention of theRights of the Child have to be respected for all Syrian children in therefugee camps by the local authorities that hold the mainresponsibility to fulfill those rights.
