The Storied Northwest

I N the Pacific Northwest, where now there arebusy cities and great, modern farms andranches inhabited b y a twentieth century

people, countless reminders o f an early historystand forth.• The historical background of this splendid newdomain of the United States was written in lettersof steel and blood, back in the years between theLewis and Clark Expedition and the coming of therailway with its train of civilization. I n the midstof placid, fruitful valleys one can pause by theplace where pioneers fought off the Sioux, or theMinnetarees; where now a thriving town stands isperhaps the site of a gold claim staked out by someearly prospector and defended with a gun; on thisbutte or that, officers of the United States Armyposted their signal mirrors, Indian scouts madecamp, Captain Clark carved his name!

The route o f the Northern Pacific Railwayfollows closely that of Captains Meriwether Lewisand William Clark, the foremost of America's in-land explorers. They, to whom much of the com-ment i n this brochure refers, carried out to theletter i n 1804-06 the commission o f PresidentJefferson for "an exploration to trace the Missourito its source; to cross the high lands (Rocky Moun-tains), and follow the best water communicationsto the Pacific Ocean." That they succeeded in sucha stupendous project was due partly to the guid-ance of Sacagawea, a Shoshone Indian woman wholed them skilfully across the great plains and throughthe unchartedmountains i nsafety to thePacific, carry-ing her papooseall the way.

This is the way the first local trains out over the NorthernPacific route looked, back in the eighties

dramatic history of the Pacific Northwest can begiven here. There are thousands of stories aboutthe early days there that must be left for him whogoes to find them for himself.

Early in 1804, 37 men, headed by Lewis andClark, set out from St. Louis by boat, bound forthe Pacific Ocean via the unknown Northwest.I t was November before the travelers reached aMandan Indian village, about 50 miles fromwhat is now Bismarck, North Dakota, and therethey decided to spend the winter. T h e squaw,Sacagawea, who had come originally out of theShoshone West, volunteered to accompany theparty and show the way. Her consort, a French-man named Charbonneau, was the nominalguide, but Sacagawea was accredited by the cap-tains as the actual guide. Departure was madeApril 7, 1805. I t was September, 1806, a yearand a half later, before the explorers turned upat St. Louis again.

heroes of Northwest history, left Fort AbrahamLincoln, just below Mandan, with his SeventhCavalry one day in the early summer of 1876.He was out after Sitting Bull, Gall and CrazyHorse—and dramatically he found them. Everyschool history tells how the allied Sioux, in arevolving circle, surrounded the detachment asit lay encamped on a knoll at the Little BighornRiver and virtually wiped i t out. Custer andall the men o f his immediate command wereleft dead, after a heroic resistance.

In the early eighties, a French Marquis namedDe Mores, brought his family and his wealth tothat unusual spot, and founded the town, namingit for his wife. H e built a large, expensive cha-teau on an overlooking bluff and erected a pack-ing plant, intending to profit by the dispositiontoward cattle-raising in that vicinity. Beginningin 1883, Marquis De Mores operated his plantfor a period o f five years unti l forced out ofbusiness by a fire which destroyed his building.The crumbling ruin of the plant's chimney still

stands on the edge of the town.One of the memorable features

of t h e Badlands i s SentinelButte, a high commanding rockhill which has given its name toa town near-by. S i x hundredand twenty feet above the plainit stands, revealing to the spec-tator on its summit the country-side for miles around. I n oldendays it was a favorite haunt forIndian scouts sent out to spyon the moves o f hostile tribesand war parties.

Pierre Wibaux, Montana pioneer and onceowner of a great cattle ranch on the plains nearthe eastern end of that state, provided anotherhistoric message for the Northwest. I n his willhe specified that a statue of himself be erectednear his burial-place "overlooking the land Iloved so well." I t stands a mile west of the townof Wibaux, named for him, and is visible fromNorthern Pacific trains.

To resume for a moment the trail of Lewis andClark, homeward bound, Glendive, Montana,claims as its moment of special historic signifi-cance the fact that these great explorers passeddirectly over its site in August, 1806. W e s t ofGlendive is the Powder River—"Let 'er buck !"—made famous by the Ninety-first Division o fthe A. E. F. as "the longestriver in the world an inchdeep, a mile wide and flow-ing up hill."

soldiers, looks up at Signal Butte, a high mono-lith. From the summit of this, officers in the timeof Indian uprisings used to flash heliograph, orsun mirror messages over the plains to othertroops in the Black Hills of South Dakota, 175miles away. Many supplies for the people therecame up the river from St. Louis on barges sentaround by way of the Missouri.

Through what i s now Bighorn, Montana,Lewis and Clark passed in 1806, and a year later,Manuel Lisa built a trading-post there. I n 1822,Colonel Wil l iam H . Ashley, president o f theRocky Mountain F u r Company, establishedFort Van Buren, another fur-trading post, a fewmiles away. Here, also, in 1876, General Gibboncrossed the Yellowstone and proceeded with 450men to aid General Custer in the battle of theLittle Bighorn, which, although he did not knowit, was already lost.

At Custer, Montana, visitors and sight-seerson the way to the famous Custer battle-groundleave the main l ine o f the Northern Pacific.Several years ago a skeleton o f a prehistoricanimal was unearthed in a bluff opposite the

town. N o t far to the west is Pompey's Pillar,a column of rock still bearing the name of Cap-tain Clark at the top where he carved it in 1806.The mystery of its naming has not been solved,although students have shown that a coloredservant thought to have been called Pompey waswith the Lewis and Clark party.

lowstone River. N o t far from here, CaptainClark surprised and killed a Blackfeet brave inthe act of stealing a horse, and from that daythe Blackfeet nation became the sworn enemyof the white man, some historians say.

At Livingston, the diverging point to Yellow-stone National Park on the Northern Pacific,Captain Clark and his party made camp onenoon. B e t w e e n L i v i n g s t o n and Glendive,through the Yellowstone River Valley, many anIndian campaign was waged in the settlementdays. Generals Miles, Terry, Gibbon, Custer,Crook, Baker and Forsyth operated here. T othe south, from Livingston, can be seen YankeeJim Canyon, leading to Yellowstone Park a tGardiner, where the famous " In Gardiner—OutCody" park tours start.

Led by Sacagawea, the Bird-Woman, Lewisand Clark trekked across Bozeman Pass, justwest of Livingston, where today are NorthernPacific tracks, and moved in to the GallatinRiver Valley.

Later Fort Ellis, an Indian war post was es-tablished in the Valley. I t was abandoned in1887. Bozeman, the next historic point, whichNorthern Pacific westbound trains approach,was settled by J. M. Bozeman in 1864. H e be-came a martyr to the pioneer cause three yearslater when Indians trapped and killed him i in theYellowstone Valley east of Livingston.

Where the Jefferson, Madison and GallatinRivers converge to form the Missouri, called the

Three Forks o f the Mis-souri, a gory, bitter pageantwas once enacted. When Sacagawea brought t h e Lewis andClark party into the valley of the Three Forks,she pointed out the place where she had beencaptured by hostile Indians on an earlier trip.

Between Three Forks and Whitehall, abovethe Northern Pacific tracks, a great cavern ofmountain dimensions and vast beauty was setaside as a memorial t o Lewis and Clark b yPresident Theodore Roosevelt in 1908. I t i sknown as the "Lewis and Clark National Monu-ment". I t s site can be seen from the train.

Over the main range of the Rockies, on theway west, comes that section of Montana whichbrought to the state a measure of wild romanceof a new sort—the gold rush. I n 1852, a FrenchRed River half-breed, Francois Finlay, knownas "Benetsee", stumbled onto a golden sand-barin what is now Gold Creek. T h e news of this

discovery brought hundreds o f adventurers,prospectors, traders and merchants. P l a c e rgold, worth many millions of dollars, was washedout of the streams and gulches of Montana inthe rapid days which followed.

At Gold Creek another historical event tookplace—the last spike in the Northern Pacificmain line was driven in September, 1883, joiningthe western and eastern lines of the "First of theNorthern Transcontinentals". G o l d Creek i smarked by a sign close to the railroad.

As gold dust began t o s l ip through t h efingers of Montanans as a medium of exchange,thievery started to grow, and a celebrated gangof outlaws, headed by a man named Plummer,held forth for a time over the best efforts of thelaw, unt i l the anonymous Vigilantes arose incivic self-defense and drove them out, or hangedthem.

Near Helena is Confederate Gulch, and a tHelena, Last Chance Gulch, two o f the richplacer diggings.

Where Lieutenant Mullan of Governor Stevens'Pacific Railway exploration found a way throughthe mountain wall in 1853 there is now a 3,875-foot tunnel in which the Northern Pacific trainsrun. M a k i n g h i s survey and directing h i ssoldier-workmen in 1859 to 1862, the lieutenantbuilt the first wagon road through rugged HellGate Canyon, just east of Missoula.

History students recall that Captain Lewis,after his party left that of Captain Clark, crossedthe river at Missoula and began his return trip,to meet his colleague later on the Missouri.

In 1861, a Catholic priest, Father De Smet,found his way into the mountain country benton preaching the Christian faith to the savages.He built a little mission south of what is nowMissoula. O u t of respect for him, the first ofthe emissaries of Christ, the town of De Smet

was named. Ano ther priest-missionary, FatherRavalli, gave his name to a town west of Arlee.

David Thompson, an Englishman, exploredthis region in 1809, and built a cabin on LakePend Oreille, making friends with the Indians.From his field notes, investigators succeeded infinding the ruined chimney of his place, facingacross the lake t o Memaloose Island, "DeadMan's Land", an Indian burial-ground.

A family named Kelso settled on the shore of alake beyond Granite, Idaho, in 1890, and soonafter, celebrated the birth of a child. T h e lake,by common accord o f the settlers around i t ,was named "Kelso Lake".

Valley, was a representative of his tribesmen asfar back as 1854 in the treaty negotiations withGovernor Stevens of Washington. I t was ChiefMeninnock who signed a treaty with the North-ern Pacific Railway to allow track laying throughthe land of his fathers. H e still goes to Wash-ington, D. C., as an emissary to the Great WhiteFather on occasion. Recent ly he was an hon-ored guest at the Northwest Indian Congress atSpokane.

Spokane, "Queen City of the Inland Empire"was named for an Indian tribe and it has still theremnant of old Fort Wright, Indian outpost, onthe outskirts ofthe city.

At what is now Union Gap, a young mannamed Phil Sheridan, in the rank of lieutenantof United States Cavalry, rode out one day witha detachment of Indian War troops to his firstengagement, in 1855. Te n years later he was anational figure in the Civil War.

time explorers, principal among them CaptainGeorge Vancouver, an English Naval Officer. I twas he who first sailed into the sound and ex-plored all i ts recesses, after several other sea-captains representing various nat ions h a dpaused at the entrance. Vancouver was seekinga way across the continent to the Atlantic Ocean,and following the identification of the ColumbiaRiver as a purely western stream, brought outthe first definite assurance that Puget Sound wasmerely a part of the Pacific. Seattle, named foran Indian chief, was founded in 1853. Tacomagrew from a settlement established there by oneNicholas Delin in 1852. T h e desirability of itsharbor led returned travelers in the East to singthe praises of Delin's place, and groups of newpioneers began t o move across the continentwith Tacoma as the objective. S o dense werethe forests about it, however, and so unimpres-sive at that t ime was the "c i ty" , that manynewcomers had trouble in finding it. Imunity from infancy to its present full stature.

During the period of maritime exploration ofthe North Coast, a Yankee merchantman namedCaptain Robert Gray turned into the mouth ofwhat seemed to be a large stream and inad-vertently drove his ship on a sand-bar. Beforehe could break away, Indians appeared in warcanoes and le t f ly a fusillade of arrows. I nhaste, and with his crew depleted, Gray pushedoff and made for open water, but he carried withhim the conviction that he had discovered agreat river, and he named i t the Columbia,which was the name of his ship. H e declaredhe had noted a strong outward current continu-ing in the face of incoming tides. Capta in Van-couver at first scouted Gray's contention, butlater investigated and found i t true. T h e riverwas used as a guide line by Sacagawea in bringingLewis and Clark to the Coast, and by the JohnJacob Astor commercial exploration party later.In 1812 i t became the basis for the territorialclaim of the United States to Oregon, Washing-

ton, Idaho, and part of Montana, es-tablished diplomatically in 1846. T h eNorthern Pacific train follows the Colum-bia for 220 miles, reviewing the mouth ofthe Walla Walla River, where the Astorexpedition arrived i n January, 1812;Yellepit, named for an Indian chief foundby Lewis and Clark ; the Grand Dalles,where portages were made by both theLewis and Clark and the Astor parties;the Columbia Cascades, last impediment

"Lewis River was followed (by Lewis andClark) t o i ts junction with Clark's Fork, andthence the party proceeded down the main Co-lumbia to Cape Disappointment, on the PacificOcean, a t which they arrived November 14th.They stopped but a few days on the north side ofthe river, but established their winter quarters atFort Clatsop, on the south side, near the mouth,where they remained unti l March 23d, 1806."

William Clark saw on their epic journey, the placesthat were won by pioneers and bitterly contested byIndians, and the coasting grounds of the great Pa-cific mariners. A l l these things have been woveninto the establishment of what is one of America'sfinest natural heritages—the Pacific Northwest.

A T the historic Northern Pacific "LastSpike" celebration September 8 ,1883, near Garrison, Montana, a

large rustic pavilion was erected for theoccasion. Among the distinguished guestswere General U . S. Grant, Wi l l iam M .Evarts and Henry M . Teller—and theFifth Infantry band, shown in the picture,played.
