It seems like all women wear a lot of hats. Sister, boss, volunteer, mother, neighbor, friend, amateur counselor - women are extraordinarily good at taking ownership of jobs that need to be done, and that no one else wants to do. Our issue highlights women who juggle not only their many personal titles, but multiple profession-al roles as well. I can’t imagine being in public office, let alone doing it in addition to my “real” job, but Gloria Diggs does that and is mother to two and grandmother to one. These women have a resilience and energy that I hope to emulate, no mat-ter what hats I wear over the course of my life.

"All’s fair in love and war—and coffee."

Embrace the Sweet Change!Ditch the regular milk and drink up the almond milk. The liquid has been on the milk substitute list since the Middle Ages and is commonly accepted as part of the paleo diet. It’s dairy-free and full of vitamin E to slow signs of aging and flavonoids to decrease the risk of degenerative diseases.

What you’ll gain?A pump of potassium. Creamier coffee. Seriously. Stir it in. Admiration. You’re SO alternative now.

What you’ll leave behind. The cow. Cholesterol and saturated fats.Boredom. (Brands like Silk boast dark chocolate & vanilla flavors!)

What you’ll wish you had:That recipe for Gwyneth Paltrow’s cinnamon shake.

My friend said, “What shall I bring you from London?”

I said Henry VIII’s ghost from Hampton Court, a cup of pomegranate seeds from a sidewalk market, William Blake’s visions, homemade sloe gin, the elegant geometry

of the Tube, the murals of the first Frost Fair, snow in Hyde Park, haloumi cheese from the Greek place, the top of the bus, a glass of red wine on a winter afternoon at

Tate Modern, black spires against a red sunset, that Cornish pasty I lost at Borough Market, the life I never got to live in London.

There always comes a

spring day when barely-

there green appears with-

out warning on yesterday’s

bare trees. Maybe we un-

dergo change in the same

way. We despair of reach-

of the soul when suddenly

we feel a tiny inner shift, an

unfurling in some part of

our life. Without realizing it,

we’ve been growing toward

the light all along.
