Memorial Tribute UNVEILED

At Skipton Hospital last week, members of the Hospital Board invited friends and family of much loved Director of Nursing Belinda Horsley and people of the wider community to afternoon tea and the unveiling of a special tribute to Belinda.

Belinda commenced her role as a nurse at the Skipton and District Memorial Hospital in 1990, quickly becoming a valued member of the nursing team. As well as being a significantly talented nurse, Belinda also dedicated herself to the consistent growth and improvement of the local Health Service and openly showed her passion in seeing the opening of the nine bed “Brigadoon Hostel”.

In 1996 the Ripon Memorial Hospital and the Skipton & District Memorial Hospital merged to become Beaufort and Skipton Health Service. Belinda again dedicated herself to support the new look Health Service B&SHS, and the two communities that it served.

In 2002, the refurbishment building project commenced at Skipton and Belinda played a significant role as the senior nurse representative in developing the existing Skipton campus.

Just two years later, Belinda was appointed Director of

Nursing of the Skipton Hospital where she passionately held this position until she retired in 2018.

Belinda and her husband Trevor, lived in the Skipton community where they raised their family and dedicated themselves to the town and district.

Belinda will always be remembered, respected and admired for her enduring commitment and outstanding contribution to Beaufort and Skipton Health Service during her 28 years of professional community service.

Traditionally the annual Skipton Open Golf Tournament has been played over the

Queen’s Birthday Long Weekend in June, and this year 2019 will see the District’s

golfers travel to Skipton to play in the Inaugural Colin Sharpe Memorial 4 Person

Mixed Ambrose Event, Monday 10th of June.

Having the Mixed Event 4 Person Ambrose will ensure that there are lots of special stories

and reminiscences to share on the 19th into the evening. We are expecting many members

and friends of the Club along with past players to make their way to Skipton to drop by to

say hello.

There will be some novelty ways to raise some funds to the Fiona Elsey Cancer Research

Institute and also St John’s Anum Caro Oncology Unit throughout the afternoon, and with

the Spinning Wheels, and Auction Items there just may be a few surprises you won’t want to

miss. FECRI Volunteers will be in attendance and also Golf Professional, Tony Collier, may

be available to help with some longer drives and possible tips??? Who knows??

has been put towards keeping

our riders safe

with new helmets.

But some young riders still struggle to find sturdy

boots to wear, and

we wonder if any Skipton families have outgrown

boots that might help?

Best are classic elastic-sided boots with leather soles

and heels, but there

are excellent styles with zips and straps that are just as

good. which would

keep our riders feet secure and safe in the stirrups.

HAVEN’T HEARD FROM THE ANGLERS FOR SOME TIME Have you Ever Tried This As Bait?? K

I went fishing one morning, but after a short time I

ran out of my prawn bait. Bugger!

Then I saw a red-belly black snake with a frog in his

mouth. I said to it, ‘Good on yer, Cobber’. (Frogs are

really good barramundi bait.)

Knowing that the snake couldn't bite me

with the frog in his mouth, I grabbed him

right behind the head, took the frog off

the teeth, and put it in my bait bucket.

Now the problem was; how to release the

snake without getting bitten.

So, I grabbed my traveller’s bottle of Johnnie Walker

Black Label and poured a moderate amount of

whiskey into its mouth. The snake’s eyes rolled back

and he went limp.

I released him into the lake without

further incident and carried on fishing,

using the frog as bait.

A little later, I felt a nudge on my foot.

It was that bloody snake again, with two more frogs.

Our Annual General Meeting – Tuesday 12 June

Rural Women will be focusing on and who will be able

to help (in both big and small ways). There will be

pizza too, and probably some of Heather’s delicious

Round 8 saw us take on Clunes at home with 3

wins from 7 games.

Yet again our under 13 section did us proud, with our 13b girls

winning 17 to 4 against a tiny Clunes side. We certainly had a

height advantage in this one and the awards went to Lyla

Molloy, Clara Phillips and Matilda Neville.

13as probably had their hardest match yet coming up against a

very tough and physical side. Our girls played strong clean

netball and did well not to get caught up in Clunes rough tac-

tics. Awards in the 13 to 8 win went to Lillian Barr, Cate Con-

nell and Holly Draffin.

The under 15 and 17 girls for Clunes were big girls and al-

though our girls tried hard in both games and there was some

solid play we were not good enough to match it with them. 15s

final score was 11 to 29 with awards to Silver Victorsen,

Gemma Richardson and Tess Bingham. 17s the awards went to

Jenna Walsh and Annie Elliott in the 11 to 44 loss.

Senior reports:

C-Grade started off well, only going down by 2 in the first

quarter. Second quarter they continued to fight but the girls

eyes where low and they seemed to become flat and they didn't

have the i r norma l f lo w d o wn the co u r t .

Considering this they did show off some very nice passages at

times.

Best on went to Narelle Larkins who puts her body on the line

each and every week. And Tash Whiteside who produced

strong drives in the mid court helping the ball move fast down

court. Skipton 32 def Clunes 42.

B-Grade came out firing against a top eight position team from

Clunes. A great fist quarter saw us only down by 1 goal at

quarter time.

Clunes came out fast in the second quarter and we were caught

flat footed and the pulled away by a considerable margin by

half time.

The emus fought back in the third and out scored the magpies

on the board, but the damage had been done.

A good last quarter saw us fight it out to the very end and the

score didn’t really reflect the effort put in throughout the game.

Best on court with a consistent game was Amy Lodge.

Backed up in defence with some great intercepts and rebounds

saw Nat Clarke take out second best.

Keep fighting Emus. Skipton 18 def by Clunes 49.

A-Grade had a fantastic start to their game with intense pres-

sure throughout the court. Hands over the ball and ring side

intercepts created turnovers that our girls were then able to

convert to goals.

With the Clunes defence creating turnovers of their own, it was

never a one way affair but with tight defensive pressure by Liz

Williams and Sophie Draffin yet again and being well sup-

ported by Fiona Collins in centre court and strong shooting

from our goalies we managed to increase the margin in the

third before a level 4th quarter led to a 40 to 26 goal

win. Great feeling to get another team win on the board with

the awards going to Liz and Sophie for an amazing day in de-

fence.

With a weekend off next weekend to enjoy the long weekend,

we then take on Learmonth at Learmonth for a tough day out!

A large and boisterous group of members of the 2009 premier-

ship side ventured out to Skipton on Saturday to have a ten

year reunion, and catch up with everyone at the club. Many

thanks to Tim McKay for chasing everyone up and bringing

them all together for a great day.

All sides rose to the occasion, putting on a display of football

that hopefully reassured our premiership heroes that the club is

continuing with their legacy.

Under12s returned to the winners circle, kicking 4.3-27 to Clu-

nes 1.0-6. There were some great passages of play, including a

highlight being the number of our players helping out the oppo-

sition. The game was played in great spirit, with some of our

players taking the opportunity to slide through the muddy patch

at both 50 metre lines, before, during and after the game.

Awards to Kobi Richardson, Cooper Cahill and Harry Collins.

Under15s have given themselves a buffer in eighth place at the

halfway mark of the season. Whatever happens from here they

have been so impressive in the way they go about their football,

and it would be a fitting reward for coach and players to solid-

ify the chances of a finals appearance even further. Awards to

N. Cooper, M. Boyer and J. Pittman.

The reserves had another good win, putting themselves on

equal points with the top two sides and are gradually chipping

away at the percentage advantage of those teams.

We didn’t have it all our way however, Clunes led at the first

change, and seemed to be causing some concerns for Skipton.

Skipton made the best of the slight wind advantage, kicking

away in the second quarter and increasing the margin thereaf-

ter. Final score

Skipton 14.9-93 def Clunes 9.2-56.

Best were Tom Miller, Scott Robson, Brad Uwland, Jackson

McPhan, Tim Gawyne and Tom Bertalli.

By this stage in the day the returning 2009 players were start-

ing to find their voice, offering sage advice to our reserve play-

ers, and even more wisdom as the seniors ran onto the ground.

The Emus had a steady start, being a little inaccurate in the

first, kicking 4.6 to Clunes 2.3, but put the foot down kicking

5.6 and 6 in the next three quarters, to finish with Skipton

21.13-139 def Clunes 8.10-58.

Curtis Townrow had a tally of eight goals earning a position in

the best, along with Andrew Pitson, Lachie Johns and Cooper

Henson.

Another break awaits us next week, followed by an away trip to

Learmonth. Hope to see all there, and also at the annual ball,

which is to be held that evening at Molloy’s woolshed.

Have your say on draft

Mt Noorat Management Plan A draft of Mt Noorat’s first ever Management Plan has been

released for public comment after Councillors endorsed the

plan at last night’s Corangamite Shire Council meeting.

The draft Mt Noorat Management Plan sets out a vision of

what the 146 hectare site will look like in 30 years’ time,

becoming a ‘destination known for its geological and

natural values and experiences, where culture past and

present is understood and respected, and where access is

provided for all to enjoy’.

Central Ward Councillor Helen Durant said the draft plan

was the result of wide-ranging consultation with the

community.

“Council received 215 survey responses on the future of

Mount Noorat, demonstrating that the community is

passionate about the site,” Cr Durant said.

“People love the mount for the uninterrupted views, the

peace and quiet, to be in nature, and to appreciate the

natural geology and history of the area.”

Key objectives include: Protect and enhance the natural

values of Mount Noorat; provide quality visitor experiences

that reflect the character of the site; Aboriginal and

European history is understood and respected; walking

tracks are accessible, well maintained and cater for diverse

experiences; the financial management and governance of

Mount Noorat is self-sustaining.

Cr Durant added the Management Plan recognised the

balance between enhancing the visitor experience and

protecting the natural values and character of the site.

“I think this plan is a good reflection of what the

community wants because of the broad input gathered at the

development stage”.

“Now it is time to look closely at the document and any

feedback needs to relate specifically to what is in the draft

Plan,” she said.

The Mount Noorat Management Committee was formed in

2018 after the estate of Niel

Black gifted Mount Noorat to Corangamite Shire in 2017.

Cr Durant said the Committee would be responsible for

carrying out actions in the Management Plan once adopted

by Council.

“The idea is that Mount Noorat is managed in the best

interests of the community and that it remains a valuable

and accessible community asset in years to come,” she

said.The draft Mt Noorat Management Plan is available

online at www.corangamite.vic.gov.au

Hard copies of the plan are available at the Civic Centre and

Terang Library.

People wishing to make a submission can do so via an

Council allocates more than $60,000 in

grants program Pyrenees Shire Council is proud to provide funding to

27 community groups for local events, to buy new

equipment and for significant capital programs.

Council allocated $63,834.48 in funding at its Ordinary

Meeting in May.

The Lexton Football Netball Club received $4078.88 for the

installation of an electronic signboard, The Natte Yallock

Recreation Reserve $2600 for barbecues and the Beaufort

Garden Club will use $5000 for new sculptures in the

Beaufort Memorial Garden.

Community grants recipients included the Carranballac

Progress Association which will use $1500 to by new hall

furniture, the Avoca Scout and Guide Group will spend

$1500 on storage shelving, and the Beaufort Community

Playgroup will use $1000 for new toys and upgrade play

facilities.

Pyrenees Shire Council Mayor Robert Vance said he looked

forward to seeing the projects the grants would be used for.

“I’m heartened by the amount of groups and the projects

they’re working on; it really shows Pyrenees is a fantastic

community to be a part of,” Cr Vance said.

“These grants will help the Landsborough CWA host a 1st

birthday celebration, improve safety at the Lake Goldsmith

Steam Rally and improve firefighting capabilities at local

halls,” he said.

“We have allocated funding for Round 3 of the 2018/19

year Community Grants, Round 3 of the 2018/19

Community Capital Grants and Round 1 of the 19/20

Community Capital Grants.”

Community Grants will be allocated for a maximum of

$750 for events and up to $1500 for equipment,

infrastructure, training and development activities.

Community Capital Grants are available to community

groups based in the Pyrenees Shire between $1,500 and

$5,000.The Wimmera Axeman’s Hall of Fame has been

allocated $1500 in principle for a permanent wood

chopping area at the Goldfields Recreation Reserve
