    UnIt 1 Film Fun Grammar Structures: The Present Simple & Present Continuous

    The Present SimpleWe use the present simple to describe regular habits and customs. We also use it to describe facts, to give opinions or to talk about things that are true. Remember the third person s: She likes. He plays.Typical time expressions with the Present Simple include: every Friday, on Mondays, once a week, twice a month, in the morning, at the weekend, always, never, sometimes, etc.

    1 Sentence completion Complete the sentences with the correct form of the verbs in brackets. Use the Present Simple.1. The film ________________ (star) an unknown French

    The Present Continuous We use the Present Continuous to talk about activities in progress, or temporary situations or changes that are taking place. For example: a) She is playing tennis. b) The cost of living is going down. Remember, we dont often use opinion or cognitive verbs (think, want, see, hear, like, love, etc.) in the continuous form.

    Comparisons Compare these two sentences: a) She plays tennis every Saturday. b) Shes playing tennis at the moment. Sentence a is a habit or custom, so we use the Present Simple. Sentence b is an action in progress, so we use the Present Continuous.

    Lost! I dont have much luck when it comes to phones. Just last month, I was in Copenhagen with some friends. In the morning, we went to a museum, and in the afternoon we were in the city centre.     Language Structures:

    The Past Simple We use the Past Simple to refer to actions from the past that we consider complete, remote and with no connection to the present. For most regular verbs, we add -ed at the end of the verb: play-played; work-worked. There are many irregular verbs that you will have to learn (please refer to the Resource Section): see-saw; do-did, etc. We use was/were for the past of the verb to be; and the past of can is could. Typical time expressions with the Past Simple include: last week / month / last night / an hour ago / three days ago / in the past / yesterday
