Background InformationArcGIS OnlineArcGIS Online is a Web based system that allows you to create interactive maps and apps and to share them with the world. For further information on ArcGIS Online features and functionality, visit Esri’s Web site at http://www.esri.com/software/arcgis/arcgisonline/features.

Creating an Esri Global Account (Optional)This tutorial can be completed without creating an online user profile. However, if you would like to save your map, you will need an online user profile. An online user profile is free and provides you with 2GB of personal space and a unique location to store and manage your own maps.

If you already have an Esri user profile, you can sign in and get started with the tutorial. Otherwise, follow the steps below to create an account.

Creating a User Profile1. Go to http://www.arcgis.com/home/and in the top right corner go to “Sign In”2. Click the Create an account link underneath “Don't have an Esri Global account?”3. Enter the requested information. Don’t forget your username and password!4. Review and accept the ArcGIS Online terms of use.5. Click Create My Account.6. You will then automatically be signed into ArcGIS.com where you will see your profile page.

Saving your MapAs a global account user in ArcGIS Online, you will now be able to save the map you create in this tutorial.

1. Name this map “Waterfalls of Hamilton”2. Add Tags to your map. Tags are keywords that can be searched in order to reference your map

within ArcGIS Online (e.g., Waterfalls, Natural Environment, Escarpment, Trails, Recreation). 3. Click on Save Map.

You now have a personal map saved on ArcGIS.com. ArcGIS Online also allows you to configure and share your maps once they have been saved, to find out how visit: http://help.arcgis.com/en/arcgisonline/help/index.html#/Sharing_items/.

Part A: Getting StartedEvery user needs a personal copy of the data in order to complete the following steps.

1. Locate the Data folder.

2. Right-click on the Data folder and choose to Copy.

3. Paste the Data folder to a location on your computer.

a. Important: Remember where your Data folder is saved!

To begin the tutorial, open your Web browser.

4. Navigate to http://www.arcgis.com/home. 5. ArcGIS Online offers two applications for creating maps:

a. ArcGIS.com Map Viewer b. ArcGIS Explorer Online

For this tutorial, you will use the ArcGIS.com Map Viewer. On the homepage, simply select the Map tab to create a new map.

Part B: Adding Data to your MapYour map always has a basemap layer. You can add additional layers to the map to create what is known as a “mashup”, since you are combining multiple layers of information, often from different sources, within a single map. Data and map services can be discovered for your area of interest from online sources on the Internet or you can add features to the map that are stored in a text file (.txt or .csv), Esri shapefile, or GPS Exchange Format file (.gpx).

Two options are available for adding your own data into a map mashup. You can either add data directly by dragging and dropping a file onto your saved Web map or you can Add Layer from File. Both options are explained below.

Note: If you are using Mozilla Firefox or Google Chrome as a Web browser, you can choose from either two options. If you are using Internet Explorer, you must use the Add Layer from File option.

1. Option #1 - Drag and Drop:

a. In Windows Explorer, navigate to the location you downloaded to and saved this tutorial’s data.

b. From the data folder, drag and drop the waterfalls.txt file into your Waterfalls of Hamilton map view.

OR

2. Option #2 - Add Layer from File:

a. In your Waterfalls of Hamilton map, click the Add button

b. Choose Add Layer from File

c. Locate the waterfalls.txt file from the tutorial’s data folder.

d. Click Import Layer.

3. Next, using one of the two options above, add the Escarpment_Boundary.zip and the

TCTrail_ON.gpx file to your map.

i. The Escarpment boundary is a zipped Esri shapefile. To add a shapefile to ArcGIS.com, it has to be first zipped as shapefiles require several reference files in addition to the .shp file for ArcGIS to display them.

To learn more about adding data and troubleshooting the data you are working with, click here: http://help.arcgis.com/en/arcgisonline/help/index.html#/Adding_features_from_a_file/010q00000060000000/

Part C: Symbolize your DataIn order to understand the data on your map, its features need to be properly displayed. The ArcGIS.com Map Viewer assigns symbols automatically, but you can customize the default to improve the visualization of information on the map. To show information related to your map data, you can rename layers, change symbols as well as configure pop-up windows.

Renaming Contents

1. Show the details of the map by clicking on the Details button on the top left-hand side.

2. Change your Details view to Show Contents of Map .

3. Hover over the layer tctrail_ON and click on the arrow ( ) appearing to the right

4. Click on Rename and name the layer how you would like to it to show on the Legend.

5. Change your Details view to Show Map Legend to verify your new layer name.

Changing the Symbology1. Go back to Show Contents of Map.

2. Click on the arrow ( ) to the right of the layer waterfalls.

3. Click on Change Symbols.

4. Choose to symbolize the waterfalls. Use Size to show Height.
