An adorable baby hat, knit from the bottom up. The instant I saw this amazing Koigu colorway, I knew it had to be a cupcake hat! I’d been looking for something cute and quick to send a cousin who just announced her pregnancy! She’s an amateur baker, perfect inspiration for this hat! Add the perfect yarn and this hat flew off my needles in no time!

Pattern Cast On With circular needle and Baby Cashmerino, cast on 80 sts. I prefer the long tail cast on in this instance. Join to work in the round, being careful not to twist. Optional: Place marker at the beginning of the round. I usually don’t. I refer to the tail to find the beginning of the round. Cupcake Paper Work K1, P1 Rib for 3” Frosting Change to Koigu, Knit 5 rows. Eyelet Row: *K2tog, YO repeat from * around. Knit 5 rows. This next row completes the picot edge. The stockinette fabric is folded in half at the eyelet row and the first and last stockinette rows are joined by knitting them together. Picot Joining Row: *With left needle, pick up the purl bump 11 rows below, knit it together with the first knit stitch, repeat from * around (80 sts). Use the yarn color change to help you find the purl bump 11 rows below. See the photo above for reference. Continue in Stockinette Stitch for 3 ½“ from the picot edge. Crown Shaping Switch to DPNs when necessary Decrease Row 1: *K6, K2tog repeat from * around. Decrease Row 2: *K5, K2tog repeat from * around. Decrease Row 3: *K4, K2tog repeat from * around. Decrease Row 4: *K3, K2tog repeat from * around. Decrease Row 5: *K2, K2tog repeat from * around. Decrease Row 6: *K1, K2tog repeat from * around. Decrease Row 7: *K2tog repeat from * around. Finishing 10 Stitches remain. Cut yarn leaving a 6” tail and pull through remaining stitches. I like to pull through each stitch once and then pull through each stitch a second time for extra stability at the top of the hat. Bring the tail to the inside of the hat and weave it in. Weave in the remaining ends. Optional: Attach a red pom-pom for that extra cherry on top! I love the new fangled pom-pom makers! Of course, the old fashioned cardboard cutouts work too! To avoid loose pom-pom attachment set it wide over the top of the hat. Don’t thread the two tails inside the hat right next to each other. Place them on either side of the top ½” apart.
