Chapter 5Keeping Your Model Organized
Groups: Making a group is like gluing together some of the geometry in your model…Use groups to make it easier to select, move, hide and
otherwise work with parts of your model that need to be kept separateComponents: They are like groups but they have a lot of extra handy
properties. (You use components when your model includes a bunch of copies of the same thing, like window, furniture, and trees)
Outliner: The outliner is a dialog box that’s basically a fancy list of all the groups and components in your sketchUP.
It shows you which groups and components are nested insdie each other and lets you assign names for them and gives you an easy way to
hide parts of your model you don’t want to see.Layers:

Grouping Things Together
Grouped geometry Doesn’t stick to anything:Example of a house and its roof when you
wanna move the roof…Using Groups make it easier to work with your
model : Selecting, moving. To Edit a group just double click on it
You can name groups which appear in outliner

Steps for Grouping
Select the faces and Edges—Edit –Make Group
OrSelect the faces and Edges—Right click—
make group

Working with componentsEverything that’s ture about grups is true
about components: they don’t stick, move, select and edit them are easy
Components Update automatically:This works when you use multiple copy..(Give
an example of two window components)
Steps For Creating Components Are Described later

Working with components
• Using components can help you keep track of quantities: You can use The components dialog box to count, select, substitute and otherwise manage all the component instances in your model.
• (Give Illustrations—For Replacing them)
Steps For Creating Components Are Described later

Working with components• You can use your components in other
models:• Components are great for making symmetrical
models: Because you can flip components and components update automatically when you change one side…then its a great way to model symmetrical things using components (ch.6 provide more)

Making a new components
04/22/2023 Geo Technical Engineering Page 2014-2015 9
Making a new component
• 1- Select the edges and faces (at least two) you would like to run in to a component
• 2- Choose Edit—Create component• 3-Give Your new component a name and description• 4-Set the alignment options for your new component• (describe for them (Glue to—set Gluing plane—Cut
opening—Always face the Camera—Shadow Face sun))• 5-Select the Replace selection with component check
box, if its not already selected• 6- Click the Create button to create your new component

Editing, Exploring, and locking component instances
• Edit—right click and chose Edit• Make Unique– when you want to make change
to only one or few of the instances of a component
• Explode: Turns the component in to a regular geometry
• Lock: Locking a group or a component instance means nobody can mess with it until it’s unlocked

OutlinerWindow—Outliner
it works good only when you have named the coponents
See next page

Outliner• Search Filter box: Searching for a
component• Outliner Options: Expand all: shows all the
nested groups and components in your model-Every last one of them (provided that they are on visible layers)
• Collapse all: You only see top level groups and components—not the ones that are nested inside others
• Sort by name: sorts them alphabetically
See next page

Illustrate Them by Examples
Outliner Advantages
• 1- Use the outliner to control visibilityInstead of right clicking the groups and components in your model to hide them, use the outliner instead…• 2-Drag and drop elements in the Outliner to change their
nesting order• Drag any of the to the top of the list if you don’t want any
component to be nested in others
• 3-Find and select things the OutlinerWhen you are selecting something in outliner, its name gets highlited and it’s a better way when having comlplex models

Layers

Layers Explain the layer dialog box. Add—delete—purge—color by layer—Name—visible—color

Layers
• Adding a new layer:• Windows—Layer• Click the Add layer button to add a new layer
to the layer list
04/22/2023 Geo Technical Engineering Page 2014-2015 17
Moving Entities to a different layer
• 1- select the entity or entities you want to move to another layer
• Choose windows – entity info• In the entity dialog box—choose a layer from
the layer drop down list
04/22/2023 Geo Technical Engineering Page 2014-2015 18
Staying out of trouble
• 1- Do all your modelling on Layer (zero): Always make sure that (Layer zero) is your current layer when you are working
• 2- Only put groups and components on other layers: Never put anything on a layer other than layer zero..unless it’s a group or component. Doing so ensures that you don’t end up with stary edges and faces on separate layers
• Use layers to organize big groups of similar things:• Keeping furniture all on a separate layer makes it easy
for you to hide and show them
04/22/2023 Geo Technical Engineering Page 2014-2015 19
Putting It All Together
• Each floor level is a group• The roof and exterior walls are groups inside
of another group• All the furniture and plumbing fixture are
components• All my furniture is one a separate layer

Creating Gutter and handrails using Follow me& Interior Desing or Window front frame using
follow me
• Before using follow me, make the rest of your model a separate group
• Make a copy of your extrusion path outside your group.
• Draw the profile in place ( parallel to one axis)• Draw the profile on the ground and then move
it into position (If your extrusion path was not parallel to any axis)
