Sketchbooks

The purpose of a sketchbook is to make you look harder at things, use your imagination, and explore ideas and techniques that interest, challenge and stimulate you. You will be required to complete one sketchbook assignment per week in your sketchbook. We will review due dates as a class at the start of each marking period. These should be quality pieces of artwork. If you plan to major in art some day, colleges like to see your sketchbooks! You should incorporate the elements (line, shape, space, color, texture, value and form) and the principles (unity, rhythm, movement, emphasis, pattern, balance and contrast) of art and design. Each sketchbook should take at least one hour to complete. This means take your time and do your best! You will find that practice does indeed pay off, and your confidence in your abilities will increase proportionally to the amount of effort and care you put into your work. Full shading and details are expected. Materials are suggested on each assignment, but you can use color pencils, pen and ink, and any other materials of your choice. This is your place to experiment and grow! Remember – you are only limited by your imagination!! You are not restricted to only the sketchbook assignments that I provide in class. Your sketchbook is a journal or diary of your thought processes that you can refer back to for more ideas later. Feel free to draw, paint, write and collage. Include your own personal creative exploration. This is the perfect place to keep notes, journals, and sketches. Attach articles, pictures, scraps of paper, and anything you find interesting! Sketchbooks will be used in class as a place for you to brainstorm for projects and take notes.

Your sketchbook will be worth 25% of your semester grade. Late sketch assignments will NOT be counted for a grade. If you are absent the day a sketch assignment is due, YOU are responsible for showing me the completed assignment at the start of the very next class I see you.
