With more than twice the number of arti-facts than the original 1970’s exhibit, many of these objects have never toured in the US before now. Prior to entering the exhibit you’ll enjoy the IMAX movie Mummies: Secrets of the Pharaoh. The exhibition fea-tures more than 100 objects from King Tut’s tomb and ancient sites representing some of the most important rulers throughout 2,000 years of ancient Egyptian history. You’ll see authentic objects including jewelry, furniture and ceremonial items, as well as the boy king’s golden sandals - created specifically for the afterlife and covering his feet when his mummified remains were discovered in 1922! And speaking of secrets....we’ll make one more surprise stop on the way home! Time will also be set aside for a no-host lunch and Seattle Center exploration. As we coast into another fall, many of our lives will shift in to our post summer routines. With the inescapable onset of the fall season, the sun will modify its course, allocating more time shining its warm solar rays on other places of the planet, as our northwest temperatures simultaneously wane. Days get shorter and temperatures cool, giving most of us more than enough reason to spend more time in our anthropogenic street cocoons—our humble abodes that line the suburban streets and rural roads of Skagit County. Yes, routines change as our local kids begin their pilgrimage to school and local television programmers unveil their fall lineup of new shows, most of which won’t last but one or two lonely seasons. Whether driving the local byways or hik-ing the regional pathways, we will see signs of the dormant season in the northwest, as deciduous trees shed their leaves and flower gardens recoil, finding refuge as they melt back to the soils.

As dormancy sets in some of us will reap our garden har-vests before rolling up the garden hoses and pushing the barbeque under cover. Our lawn mower, both a friend and foe, will be wheeled away to spend a lonely winter hunkered

in the garage or shed. We’ll turn on our heaters and kick off our shoes, enjoying the warmth of our homes and family. For many of us, this has become the Pacific Northwest rou-tine. There is a certain need for us to hunker in during fall and winter, to recharge before the dormant season awakens to the shrill of our migratory flying feathered friends or the baritone chorus of morphing amphibians.

The dormant season is simply a time to recharge—there is no real good reason it should represent complete seasonal immobility! Our changing routines needn’t keep us from enjoying your parks and local recreational leagues. Your lo-cal parks and recreation departments have lots of parklands to stroll in or activities to engage in. Look through this guide and find a recreational league, or “surf-up” your local parks website to find a nearby park to enjoy. If you haven’t watched the salmon as they struggle up local streams on their last journey, visit Pomona, Donovan, or Steelhead Park. There are vast parklands and a plethora of recre-ational leagues in Skagit County. So, go get some northwest recreation, whatever that might be for you. And get ready to RECHARGE!
