DESCRIPTION
Saint Joseph's University is a small, private, Jesuit, Catholic institution located on the geographic edge of Philadelphia, PA.TRANSCRIPT
There’s something that sets Saint Joseph’s apart from all other universities. We call
it magis.
Magis: it’s about living greater. What’s magis? It’s a Jesuit principle that underlies everything we do at Saint Joseph’s. Magis inspires us to think more broadly, work a little harder and make the most of our God-given talents. More simply stated, magis means making each choice – and therefore each day – better than the last.

Addressing global healthcare issues aligned perfectly with Matt’s desire to go into medicine. As an undergraduate at SJU, he helped create a simple and inexpensive water filtration device to make clean water easily available and break the cycle of poverty in third world nations. After SJU, Matt enrolled in med school at Creighton University. Now he’s doing his internal medicine rotation at Saint Mary’s Hospital in San Francisco. Where will magis take you? sju.edu/matt

Molly spent the year after graduation working and traveling through Europe and Argentina. But the hands-on experiences she had in SJU’s biodiversity lab drew her back. Now, she’s earning her master’s in biology at SJU, serving as a GeoKids Fellow, and – yes – she’s back in the lab. Where will magis take you? sju.edu/molly
Totally slammed, but still finding time for research.

Philadelphia:
With others. For others. Service is one of the key elements of a Jesuit education. Though it’s not a graduation requirement, hundreds of Saint Joseph’s students serve every week. And hundreds more participate in our service immersion programs. In the Jesuit tradition, service is about more than just helping others; it’s standing with them.
There are two Campus Ministry programs especially designed for first-year students. IGNITE is an overnight, off-campus experience where you can get to know other new students and ease your transition to
500 students giving back each week. That’s the magis.
Philly is fantastic for students. Philadelphia has always been a place for freedom. Political. Religious. Ideological. That’s why The City of Brotherly Love is so welcoming and culturally diverse, which is perfect when you’re looking for something new to think about – or to eat. But that’s just the beginning. Our city could be a course in American history. Pivotal events, like the signing of the Declaration of Independence, happened within just a few miles of campus. With eight Fortune 500 companies, Philadelphia is ideal for internships. When you’re ready to take a break from the books, our five pro sports teams will give you plenty to cheer about. And having more than 50 colleges in the area makes Philly a great place to be a student.

college. The other is MAGIS, a yearlong, student-led service and social justice program. Each week, you’ll serve at different community organizations and learn about the social justice issues that are addressed at each one.
One of our most popular away programs is the Appalachian Experience. Every spring break, over 400 SJU students volunteer to work on Habitat for Humanity sites in Virginia, West Virginia and Kentucky. Other teams have served communities in New Orleans, Guatemala, Ecuador and El Salvador.
PHILADELPHIA has more
public art than any other U.S.
city. And Fairmount Park is
the largest landscaped urban
park in the world.

Hawk pride covers more than basketball. Saint Joseph’s fields 20 varsity teams that compete in the NCAA Division I Atlantic 10 Conference and the Philadelphia Big 5. Our cross country team regularly finishes at or near the top of its conference. SJU rowing teams have a long tradition of success at the Dad Vail Regatta and other prestigious national competitions. And our baseball, softball, field hockey and tennis teams have new, state-of-the-art facilities on the Maguire Campus.
Hawks don’t stop at being exceptional athletes; they’re also stellar scholars. Recently, 243 of them were recognized on the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll, achieving a 3.0 GPA or better. Ninety-two of those athletes were also included in the Atlantic 10 Commissioner’s Honor Roll with a 3.5 GPA or above.

That’s the SJU battle cry. You see, the Hawks have a proud tradition of basketball, regularly advancing to post-season play. Recently, both the men’s and women’s teams made it to their respective NCAA tournaments.
The Hawk will never die!
Don’t expect to sit around your dorm room. Hawks tend to be doers – and there is no shortage of Hawk Pride around here. You’ll have all kinds of opportunities to explore your interests, express yourself and apply what you’re learning. If you’re not amazed by what you’re doing, you’re missing out.
It’s about doing more – for yourself and for others.

SJU takes on the world.
Internship or Co-op – what’s the difference? Co-ops are full-time paid positions, where you’ll alternate semesters working and going to classes. Internships can be part- or full-time, paid or unpaid. And they’re usually scheduled around your classes.
Summer is another opportunity. Our Summer Scholars spend the season diving into special research or creative projects. They receive stipends and work closely with professors. sju.edu/ssp
Be prepared to get involved. SJU students speak up in the classroom, do research, study abroad and apply what they’re learning through internships, co-ops and service-learning.
