Welcome to a summer of unlimited fun and adventure: SJCC Summer Camp 2011! This summer we are expanding our camp experience with new programs and locations for all campers around the Puget Sound. We invite you to join us.

We are proud to offer 37 unique camps this summer and to welcome campers at three different locations. We are very excited to announce our partnership with The Jewish Day School of Greater Seattle in Bellevue and Seattle Jewish Community School in north Seattle to bring our camp experience beyond our Mercer Island location. Now you have more choice in terms of camps and locations. The SJCC Summer Camp program has proven to inspire Jewish journeys and create life long connections for our campers and staff members. By moving beyond our Mercer Island campus, while at the same time enriching and adding new summer programs at our Mercer Island location, we are providing our kehila (community) with an exciting line-up of summer choices. SJCC Summer Camps are open to everyone. We encourage all campers to appreciate diversity and celebrate differences. Our professional staff members encourage Jewish values such as tzedakah (helping others), hachnasat orchim (welcoming everyone) and respecting each other. The values we teach, while Jewish in nature, are universal ones all of us can subscribe to.

We carefully screen and then select staff members for their ability to be good leaders and role models. Safety and security continues to be a priority in all our camps. Full time SJCC professionals supervise all of our programs and provide ongoing security training for counselors, specialists and camp directors.

Our summer camp team is a group of talented and caring individuals committed to working with young children and adolescents. Many of our camper’s favorite staff members will return again this summer. We pride ourselves with our low 8-to-1 camper-to-staff ratio to ensure each camper is safe and having the best experience. Summer camp is an important step in any child’s development. SJCC Summer Camps give your child the opportunity to develop physically, emotionally and socially in a safe and nurturing environment. Our camps are dedicated to enriching your child’s summer experiences, fostering friendships and creating lasting memories. SJCC Summer Camp is a tradition steeped in 50 years of experience and history. We trust you will want to be a part of our Summer Camp legacy and we look forward to your child joining our SJCC camp family.

Let the fun begin,

Zach Duitch Matt KorchSJCC Program Director SJCC Youth and Family Program [email protected] 206-388-1990 [email protected] 206-388-0830

CAMP KATANfor children entering kindergarten

Campers will explore art, drama, science, nature, sports, music, storytelling, and daily ruach (spirit). Each three week session will have the following key components: a theme, weekly field trips, special events, and swimming.

In addition, the entire camp culminates with an all camp Shabbat every Friday. Counselors are mature positive role models with day camp experience. They are sure to emphasize Jewish values, Israeli activities and Judaic programming during the camp day.

NEW! New to Camp Katan this year is our half day option. This will allow first time campers coming right out of their half day Pre-K programs to integrate into our summer camp programs at their own pace. Just because they are only here for a half day, they will still have a full days worth of fun!

Typical Day ScheduleA typical day at Camp Katan includes creative Jewish programming, arts and crafts, science and nature, sports, games, stories, Israeli activities, and quiet time that give campers a chance to relax with camp friends. We arrange the schedule so Katan campers will have the chance to explore areas of interest in a nurturing and responsive space. Our half day participants will spend the morning with the Camp Katan, participating in the same activities and programs, but will end their day at 12:30 p.m.

Camp Katan provides younger campers with a wonderful first camp

experience in a program designed just for them. Camp Katan will

introduce all the different aspects of SJCC camping to first-time campers.

Our qualified professional staff helps each child learn and grow both academically and socially. Every day in Camp Kef we spend the day participating in sports, arts and crafts, science, nature, cooking and Judaic enrichment. Red Cross certified swim instructors supervise free swim in our heated indoor pool, and lessons are available before and after camp. Each week campers get to hop on a bus and explore the amazing offerings of Seattle in the summer. Field trips include Family Fun Center, local parks, Remlinger Farm, the zoo, hiking in the mountains, an Argosy cruise, and much more.

SJCC Camp Kef provides an enriching summer filled with a wide variety of activities, from sports and Judaics to creative art and nature exploration. We promote an environment of respect, cooperation and caring where children discover new interests and talents.

NEW! SJCC Camp Kef expands this summer, with session II camp at the Seattle Jewish Community School in north Seattle and session III at The Jewish Day School in Bellevue.

ChugimCampers participate in a chug (area of special interest) of their choice every day. There are wide variety of chugim including sports, Judaic projects, arts and crafts, science, nature, cooking, ceramics, kickball, gaga, and drama. Each chugim focuses on a specific project each week, like plaster face masks, candle making, the human body, and more.

CAMP KEFfor children in grades K - 8Imagine fresh air, green grass and sunshine. Add your best

friends and tons of new adventures and you’re dreaming

about Camp Kef. Whether your child is a first time camper

or seasoned veteran, a world of excitement awaits them at

Camp Kef.

SwimmingCampers take to the water two to three times a week for a free swim. If the camper passes the necessary swim tests they can utilize our TurboTwister slide. In addition to free swim, our Red Cross certified instructors also stress safety when in, on or around the water.

Judaic ProgrammingEach year, Israeli counselors spend the summer at SJCC Summer Camps to help us learn more about life in Israel. Campers learn Jewish and Israeli history through stories, song, food, pop culture, and dancing. We incorporate special themes into the program, such as a trip to Israel, a Maccabiah (sports) tournament, falafel making, and Judaic arts and crafts projects.

Every Friday afternoon, each village gathers together to welcome Shabbat with a blessing over the candles, juice, and challah. Some groups bake challah for a Shabbat snack. The impact of Jewish living at camp lasts a lifetime. Friday afternoon pickups will be at the Stroum Jewish Community Center main facility on Mercer Island.

Camp Kef VillagesWe take the utmost care at Camp Kef to place your child with an appropriate group of children of similar age and abilities. Children are grouped into villages according to school grade. Each village has its own special activities. A senior counselor and junior counselor will supervise each group of 10-12 children.

You may request that we group your child with friends of the same age; we will try to accommodate your request but we do not guarantee placement.

SJCC Performing Arts Camp provides young people with enriching summer experiences that develop their social and physical skills, cultivate independence and self-confidence, and challenge their imaginations – all in a Jewish atmosphere. The program is highly structured and requires that every child is motivated to give their full attention and fully participate each day. Performing Arts Camp also participates in outdoor recreation and swimming.

Performing Arts Camp offers children a stimulating summer of workshops in art, dance and drama. The program also includes on-stage performances, weekly field trips, visits from guest artists, and a full-length production in which every actor has a speaking part.

From attending youth productions to strumming the guitar at EMP to learning the art of puppeteers, SJCC Performing Arts Camp encompasses a wide variety of field trips which expand the knowledge of art for each camper. Not only do campers set off to experience these talents, but visitors from Seattle area companies come to teach dance, improv, music and other aspects of the performing arts. Campers receive a well-rounded and dynamic learning experience.

Acting Up and Broadway Bound campers will participate in a one night sleep over at the SJCC each session.

PERFORMING ARTS CAMPfor kids & teens in grades 1 - 10

Performing Arts Camp builds self-esteem and confidence as it

gathers campers into a unified company of performing artists.

This ensemble is built on teamwork, collaboration and fun

as it encourages young artists to learn and grow throughout the summer.

DramaTheatre games as well as drama and vocal exercises help campers learn to express themselves. They will experience theatre “up close” through workshops with professionals from the Seattle theatre community. Workshops may include acting for the camera, stage combat, make-up, and theatre sports.

DanceThrough a study of technique and choreography, campers learn how to break down complicated routines into manageable steps. They gain flexibility, strength and stamina, explore various dance styles, and learn how to survive a dance audition – a must for school musicals.

Theatre ProductionCampers participate in an all-camp production at the conclusion of each camp session. We experience the camaraderie and energy that builds with the unfolding of a performance. In addition, campers have the opportunity to learn about the backstage components of theatre production, including set construction and lighting, as well as sound design and operation.

NEW! Summer Stock:Musical Theatre EditionA new camp for teens in grades 7-10

Is musical theatre your life? Do you watch “High School Musical” and “Glee” and wish that were you? At the SJCC’s brand new Summer Stock Musical Theatre Camp, you can take the first step in building your confidence as a performer and attaining your dreams.

Campers will work towards developing their skills in all areas of performance. Each day campers will participate in acting, dance, and voice training, along with other fun recreational activities. Campers will build the foundation for an incredible culminating performance in the end of the session. Acting classes will focus on improvisation and theatre games, helping young performers take bigger creative risks on stage. Voice classes will help campers develop good vocal technique and use music to tell a story to the audience. In our dance sessions, campers will explore different types of dance and how they apply to musical theatre styles.

This camp is your ticket to making great friends, becoming the “triple threat” as a singer, dancer, and actor and having lots of fun! You will work towards a musical theatre performance that will highlight you and all that you can accomplish!

Summer Stock:For teens in grades 7-10

Days in Summer Stock will be spent rehearsing and using improv/drama games to strengthen acting skills, as well as singing and voice exercises which teach projection and allow campers to bring their work from classroom to the stage confidently. Other workshops include dance and choreography, stage combat, technical skills (lighting, sets and backstage management), stage makeup, and field trips.

The camp program will follow this three-week schedule:Week 1: Auditions, receive scripts: read-throughs and character developmentWeek 2: Blocking/stage directions, set and lighting designWeek 3: Off script, costume fitting, dress rehearsals and performances

A fun filled week, practicing the “FUN-da-mentals” of the game with the most awesome and encouraging staff in town will leave your young hoopster talking about it for the rest of the summer! We are dedicated to youth development, offering this camp to kids aged 8-14 with any skill level. You won’t find any bench-warmers in our camp - EVERYONE makes the team.

We’re all about sharing our love for the sport, and for life, in an active way that helps kids learn without even realizing it. Each day, we practice a basketball skill paired with a life skill (e.g. passing with communication, defense with discipline and work ethic), with fun activities and games. Our “campers” get to try on some “slick” moves while having a ball, changing their “I can’ts” to “I CANs”!

The B’nai Brith Youth Organization (BBYO) will co-sponsor the CIT program. BBYO will help facilitate leadership workshops during each session. These workshops will focus on communication, team building and community service. BBYO is known as the largest and most effective provider of identity building and leadership development programs for Jewish teens.

This program guides teens through the transition from camper to leader. Teens gain a better understanding of their strengths and develop their skills working with groups of children. CITs learn the skills necessary to become effective camp counselors.

Our CIT program is built to encourage teens to become role models and leaders in our Jewish community. CIT participants plan programs, lead activities, create projects, teach Judaics, and share responsibilities for a unit of campers. Upon completion, CIT participants will receive a certificate for community service hours.

All prospective CITs will need to complete an interview process before being accepted in the program. CIT trained teens are not guaranteed placement at SJCC Summer Camp as a counselor the following summer. CITs must commit to a minimum of three weeks equaling one camp session to enroll.

Senior counselors have all completed at least one year of college; junior counselors are entering college or are 12th graders who have completed our SJCC Counselor in Training (CIT) program.

CommunicationOur counselors and supervisory staff focus on the growth and learning of each child. In addition, we keep records noting your child’s progress. The camp director is available to answer any questions you may have as well as to discuss your child’s personal growth at the end of the camp session. You can also find up to date schedules and information on our parent’s only camp website which we make available to all our campers and their families.
