Our return to God for Blessings onSunday, February 9, 2020
“For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.” MATTHEW 5:20
The scribes and Pharisees lived according to the letter of the law and they used this to elevate themselves above the other people. Jesus is clear – it’s the love that you have in your heart that will get you to heaven. Simply following church rules out of obligation, not love, does not put you on the path to heaven. Attending Mass on Sunday and then gossiping about a fellow parishioner on the parking lot is an example of a modern day Pharisee.

CATHOLIC EXPONENT
“Immense is the wisdom of the Lord,” the Book of Sirach tells us in today’s first reading. The responsorial psalm notes that “Blessed are they who follow the law of the Lord.” “Instruct me, O Lord, in the way of your statutes,” the psalmist adds, “that I may observe your law and keep it with all my heart.” The second reading, from 1st Corinthians, emphasizes that this wisdom of God “is not a wisdom of this age.” Yet, we live in this age, and the message from the wisdom of God can be obstructed or drowned out by the cacophony of competing messages and media – from the empty or banal to the confused, to the misinformed, to the outright evil. The Catholic Exponent, your diocesan newspaper, through its news, commentary, Scripture reflections, and adult faith formation, helps us to focus on the wisdom of God and its continuing relevance to our lives and our world. Subscribe or renew your subscription today by dropping the “Catholic Exponent” envelope from your parish packet into the collection basket. Or call 330-744-5251 or email us at [email protected] to request subscription information. Stay focused on the wisdom of God. Read and support the Catholic Exponent.
