B reaking Open the Word of God

The reality that encompasses all of the appearances of the Risen Lord, and which this Easter Season has been bringing to our attention so we can see it with the eyes of faith, is love. Christianity is a religion of love. The love we are talking about here is not a feeling of sympathy and well-meaning that dissipates in good intentions. The love Jesus talks about today is a response to the love he has given us, the love of the Father which has been made manifest by giving up his life on the cross, and rising again to new life. Christian love is God’s love for us, freely given in Christ. And our love for God, through Christ, in return. It is precisely a new way of life which takes flesh and becomes concrete in attitudes and actions. This must be our understanding when Jesus says “if you love me, you will keep my commandments.” This is where it becomes evident that true love goes beyond good feelings, and should be an act of will which is born in a person’s heart. In this love Jesus talks about today there is a first moment of listening and accepting his word, therefore, a moment of understanding. And then there is a second moment of putting into practice, and that has to do with the will. To keep Jesus’ commandments means to listen and look, understand and decide. And it is quite clear that the content of those commandments and that new way

of life in obedience to Jesus Christ cannot be anything but love: “whoever says he remains in Jesus, must live the way he lived;” because whoever listens to the Word of Jesus and is able to see him with faith, he also discovers Him “in the least of my brothers”. When we strive to live this way, we receive a new gift, the gift of comfort, of being witnesses to the Paraclete. He is the Spirit of Jesus Himself, Love incarnate that enjoins the Father and the Son.

This is how we can come to understand the real presence of Christ in his Church and his sacraments, the real opportunity to see him and experience his person, all of this is the work of the Holy Spirit. This also explains the clear sadness in light of Jesus approaching departure. We have received the same Spirit from Jesus, we know Him and we see Him because of faith, and His fruits are palpable. We can perceive Him in the Word as the true Word of God. In the Eucharist, we know we enjoy a true relationship with Christ and, despite our weaknesses, we are able to comprehend the truth of the commandment to love. We understand than only love saves.

If we glorify Jesus Christ in our hearts, keep His commandments and trust in the Holy Spirit, there is nothing we should fear. Persecutions and falsehoods against us become opportunities to give witness, to explain the reason for our hope. This statement is particularly timely these days. The witness of our faith happens, as Peter reminds us in the second reading, when

we respect the freedom of others. They are different ways of love, and, therefore, ways to keep Jesus’

commandments. This means replying to evil with goodness, to curses with blessings, to false testimonies with good behavior. Loving Christ implies, then, the strong will to live according to His Word, and following His example; and thus the presence of the Holy Spirit will be guaranteed, the Church’s defender, comforter and guide, and in turn, the Church guides each one of us in the path of truth.

W alking together like

brothers and sisters:

Dear brothers and sisters, we are slowly approaching the great celebration of Pentecost. The events of last week, such as the Confirmation Mass when 94 of our brothers and sisters received the outpouring of the Holy Spirit through the Sacrament of Confirmation, serve as proof of the presence of the Holy Spirit who pours Himself out in abundance. Also the conference we heard from Fr Rito Guzman, M.Sp.S. about the Spirituality of the Cross was a means God gave us to acknowledge the presence of God in our journey. Let us continue praying for an outpouring of the Holy Spirit upon us this coming Pentecost. I invite you to pray the Novena to the Holy Spirit, an abbreviated form appears on page 8. I hope many of you will take the time to attend the special celebration we’ll have at the Pentecost Vigil Mass, June 3 at 5pm. Come Holy Spirit, Come!

Loving is Giving Oneself III —————Fr. Mario Rodriguez, MSpS—————

Fr Felix writes: “In the perfect, reciprocal, infinite gift that each of the three Divine personas receives, is

there infinite and endless joy… Gift of Himself, Gift of Love, Gift that requires we give ourselves, with the utmost

trust and surrounded by pain, which is the inseparable partner of perfect love.”

Loving as giving is the great adventure we are called to live as Christians. And that giving needs to be

unconditional, following God’s model. God gives Himself completely to each one of the Divine Persons. He

gives Himself to us unconditionally and completely.

In my personal experience I realize that I want to be noticed; I want people to pay homage to me and not

ignore me; I like to be paid attention to; I’m hurt when I’m ignored or forgotten; but Jesus’ invitation is exactly

the opposite. Jesus invites us to give ourselves and put others first; He invites us to leave all selfishness and all

resentment aside. His invitation is to make others feel good and loved, and with Jesus’ own love. It is very hard

for me to love that way, but my heart longs for that; my heart knows that when I do that I feel free, peaceful and

joyful. I feel like I fly up to God and in encountering the other I feel transformed; but it is still difficult. And just

like it is difficult for me it must be for you.

The invitation is clear: Love is giving oneself.

We need to fight against selfishness so we can go out

to our brothers and sisters. Let’s leave pride aside, so

we can give ourselves the way Jesus did. I know that

we can with the help of His grace, and this helps us

be transformed into Christ Priest and Victim. Love

like Jesus loves! I invite you to live this adventure.

sientan amados; con el mismo amor de Jesús. Para mi es difícil amar de esa manera, pero mi corazón añora eso;
