Page 2 of 28 1. Introduction Within Networking Activity NA4 the Black Sea country partners will prepare and submit entries (records) for:

• European Directory of Marine Environmental Datasets (EDMED) • European Directory of Marine Environmental Research Projects (EDMERP) • Cruise Summary Reports CSR) • Socio-economic and (thematic) mapping data • Common Data Index, being part of the Black Sea virtual data and information

structure (NA5) (CDI meta-database), that will give a highly detailed index to individual datasets, managed by regional partners.

To get an appropriate overview of available data and information related to the directories as mentioned above as well as to realize an adequate planning of the activities to be carried out within the framework of NA4-1 to NA4-4, from April to June 2006 the Black Sea country partners made an inventory of their datasets, projects and cruises, as well as of their database system (if available). These inventories were presented and discussed during the second Black Sea SCENE workshop in Varna Bulgaria from 21-24 June 2006. In this deliverable a summary overview will be shown of the results. 2. Set up Inventory

Page 12 of 28 5. Overview database systems Black Sea country partners Most Black Sea country partners do not have a database system. From those partners which already developed a information system a summary overview is given: PR7 UkrSCES UKRAINIAN SCIENTIFIC CENTRE OF THE

ECOLOGY OF THE SEA UkrSCES data base “Sea Base” was created in 2002. In 2005 it was reorganized. The data base at the present time is functioning on the MS SQL Server 2000 platform. The average quantities of parameters are 279. They exist in 3 languages: English, Russian and Ukrainian. The structure of the new version of DB is presented in 22 tables on the following information:

General meteorological information; Hydrology and hydrochemistry; Geology; Pollution in bottom sediments; Pollution in water; Metals in water; Metals in bottom sediments; Poly aromatics in water; Poly aromatics in bottom sediments; Chlorine organics in water; Chlorine organics in bottom sediments; Radioactive elements in water; Radioactive elements in bottom sediments; Macrozoobenthos; Phytoplankton; Fotosyntetic pigments; Meyo benthos; Microphytobenthos; Macrophytobenthos; Methods.

Each sea station where investigations are made, is identified by a platform of name of the research program, time and spatial parameters. Each parameter, in turn, is identified by sample number, the environment of sampling (biota, water, sediments, air, etc.), the technique of measurement, the analytical equipment by means of which the analysis are made, personification characteristics and an attribute of quality (quality label). A logic structure of the data base "Coast base" is now under development It is submitted by the following information:

Urban Geography Roads, railways Pipelines Electrical Agriculture Land using Pollution sources Underwater and coastal pollution sources Rivers as pollution sources

RAS SOUTHERN BRANCH OF P.P. SHIRSHOV INSTITUTE OF OCEANOLOGY

SBSIO RAS has the following type of databases: 1. Database Ocean Base for job in a local area network is established on a workstation for service use in an internal network. The base is written in language Perl. Gelendzhik is a physical site of the base. The Database contains, basically, data on hydrophysical parameters of the Black sea, received during experimental researches. Volume of a database – some thousand primary measurements of hydrophysical cuts, etc. 2. A database is realized on a platform of server Oracle 10. The base is included into a global network. A physical site of the base is Moscow. The input in a database is carried out to the address of http://ias.ocean.ru/oceandb/, or from page http://coastdyn.ru/toppage1.htm. In this base there are materials on hydrophysical research of World ocean, and also primary data of research in a coastal zone of the sea. Volume of data by the current moment is more than 5000 thousand numbers of the measured parameters. 3. Database MySQL. Is in a global network on a server http://yutex.ru. A physical site of base – Moscow, Base is focused on accommodation of materials of type of "news", «electronic library» and «illustrations in a raster format». Access to base from page http://coastdyn.ru. PR15 ILRAS INSTITUTE OF LIMNOLOGY RUSSIAN ACADEMY OF

SCIENCE Long-term annual and monthly average data on discharge of inflowing rivers (gauge stations) are accumulated in World Archive for Runoff Gauge Stations (WAGRS). That WAGRS was developed by Drs. A.Moiseenkov and I.Nikiphorova (State Hydrological Institute, Russia). The archive WAGRS comprises data on at least several doze gauge stations located at rivers inflowing the Black Sea. The geographical, morphometric, hydrological, climatic etc. data on coastal lakes (coastal lagoons) surrounding the Black Sea as well as data on main river-dam reservoirs constructed at inflowing rivers are accumulated in authors’ vast global WORLDLAKE database (Excel files) (Ryanzhin, Straskraba 1999; Ryanzhin et al. 2001). Currently the WORLDLAKE contains vast data on approx. 49,000 natural and 7,000 manmade lakes compiled during several past years from approx. 5,700 relevant literature sources. These include data on several hundred coastal lakes (lagoons) and river dam reservoirs surrounding the Black Sea.

Page 28 of 28 PR23 IFA INSTITUTE OF FISHERIES AND AQUACULTURE The data base system consists of separate data bases for different fields of investigations – hydrology and hydrochemistry, phytoplankton and zooplankton – data sets piled since 1991. Bacteria, benthic communities and fishery data are stored without special data base, some data still on paper in protocols. The available data bases are specialized software for numerical processing and storage of the raw and derived data. The phytoplankton data base is written in CLIPER, new software in Si+ with use of Access is initiated. The data base of hydrological and hydrochemical data is written in PASCAL, the zooplankton data base – in BASIC. The data bases work with dbf files. The biological data bases keep protocols of species diversity and estimations of density, biomass (raw, carbon), indices of biodiversity, major groups shares, percentages, etc.
