Overview

This workshop is organized by the European Association of Geoscientists & Engineers (EAGE) and is the sixth in a series of workshops dedicated to the geology of the Arabian Plate. The goal of the workshop series is to align the regional geological understanding and applied nomenclature of the key hydrocar-bon-bearing stratigraphic intervals of the Arabian Plate.

This workshop will focus on the Late Cretaceous and Early Ter-tiary (Arabian Plate Sequences 9 & 10) Interval that is charac-terized by under-explored siliciclastic, carbonate and evaporite sequences with proven source rocks, reservoirs and seals. The workshop will propose a time-based sequence stratigraphic framework, produce updated regional palaeogeographic maps and identify common stratigraphic markers.  It will flag tools and methods that are particularly efficient in studying complex, mixed sedimentary systems and will enhance our ability to predict the presence and effectiveness (e.g., distribu-tion and quality) of reservoirs, seals and source rocks.

For who?The workshop is targeted at production and exploration ge-ologists, geophysicists and reservoir engineers working on Late Cretaceous and Early Tertiary strata in the Middle East. A pre-requisite is a basic understanding of sedimentology and sequence stratigraphy of carbonate and siliciclastic sedimen-tary systems.

Field Trip

Field trip to Jebel HafeetInstructed by Dr Christoph LehmannWednesday 7 December, 07:30 – 16:00 hrs

Participants for the field trip will head to Jebel Hafeet, which is an anticline located at the front of the Oman Mountains in the Al Ain area. The Eocene Rus and Damman Formations, which are part of the AP10 sequence, form the main part of the anticline. The Tectonostratigraphic relationship to the un-derlying Upper Cretaceous AP9 sequence and the overlying AP11 sequence will be discussed. Participants will have the op-portunity to further compare and contrast the discussed stra-tigraphy across the Arabian plate.

Participation on the field trip is included in the registration fee.

Core Workshop

The core workshop is one of the highlights of the event, with selected cores from a number of producing and non-produc-ing fields spanning the entire Gulf region being displayed, in-

cluding cores from Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. Guided by specialists, rock-based discussions will pro-vide a unique opportunity for participants to develop a better understanding and more appreciation of these cores.

Kuwait Oil Company CoresSelected intervals from core no. 1 to 26 from the Dammam Formation representing all the lithofacies including its top and the bottom contacts will be displayed. The Dammam Formation is the youngest carbonate unit de-veloped in Kuwait before the Neo-Tethys seaway closure. It displays a transgressive-regressive depositional sequence. The formation is about 650 feet thick. The generalized lithologic sequence of formation in ascending order is; basal black shale, Nummulitic limestone, parallel laminated limestone, chalky dolomicrite, Yellowish-brown dolomite, and karstified dolos-tone with chert lithofacies. The core no 2 to 5 in the well MN-153 in the interval 4192’ to 4300’, covering around 100 feet of core representing Hartha Formation will be taken for core display. The core is represented by carbonate sequence comprising of dominantly limestone with minor dolomitic limestones. Lime-stone facies are represented by argillaceous mudstone, fo-raminiferal wackestone, bioclastic packstone, bioclastic grain-stone with occasional floatstone and rudstone textures. Minor dolomitic facies are developed mainly represented by dolomud-stone and dolowackestone with development of intercrystalline porosity.

ADCO CoresUmm Er Radhuma Formation (Paleocene)This formation consists of shelly and bioclastic limestone and dolomites with thin shales at the base. The deposition of the Umm Er Radhuma Formation started by transgressions in the Tethys Ocean after the top of Simsima unconformity. The deposition started by a shale section in the basal part of the Formation. After the deposition of the shale section a drop in sea level took place which led to the deposition of argillaceous limestone sec-tion with scatters chert nodules. A gradual upward shallowing took place and led to deposition of medium to coarse grained bioclastics limestone porous and permeable which form the best aquifer section within the UER formation. The thickness of the UER formation ranges between 230 ft. to 1100 ft. In some localities, the basal shales are overlain by Sabkha cy-cles; each cycle is terminated by thin anhydrite.

Saudi Aramco CoresTwo cores from Saudi Arabia will be shown. The first will showcase the lower portion of the AP-9 (in the Aruma or the Campanian), and the second will cover the upper portion of the AP-10 sequence (Dammam Formation or the Eocene). It will be an opportunity the participants to examine the simi-larities and differences vertically (between cores in the same area but in different stratigraphic intervals) and laterally (cores from Kuwait compared to Saudi Arabia and to UAE).
