Six Thinking
Hats Strategy
How do we look at a
problem or situation from
different perspectives to dig deeper
into a character/stor
y?
The students
are talking while the
teacher is
talking.
Recall…What are the facts?
White Hat (Logic)
*Students are talking while the teacher is talking.
*There is noise so others are distracted and can’t hear.
*Many students get silly or get off task.
Describe how does this makes you feel?
Infer how it makes other people feel?
Defend…Do we feel this is a right choice?
Red Hat (Emotion)
*Teacher feels offended.*Students are frustrated because they can’t hear.
*Some that are talking like it because they are making people
laugh.
Evaluate what is wrong with this idea?
Assess…Do we think it will actually work?
Predict…What’s the worst thing that could happen?
Black Hat (Negative)
*Time is wasted.*Learning is compromised.
*Those that have the “floor” feel the are being ignored or their
ideas aren’t important.*Classroom looks like chaos.
Examine what is right with this idea?
Evaluate what we can do to make this better?
Judge if it would be good for everyone if we use this idea?
Yellow Hat (Positive)
*You can say what’s on your mind.
*It can be fun.*You don’t have to wait to speak, therefore you won’t forget what
you want to say.*Everyone gets to speak…not
just certain kids!
What new idea does this give us?
Evaluate how we could do this differently? What if…..?
Green Hat (creative)
*The teacher will be more aware of the amount of time that she talks.
*The teacher will make sure to include time for students to interact.
*Students will think about whether their comment or talking will interfere
with other people’s learning.*Students will work on managing their
own talking more.by evaluating “why”.
Develop some goals for fixing the problem?
Summarize your final thoughts or ideas?
Blue Hat (Process)
*The teacher learned that she needs to limit the amount of “talking” SHE
uses as a part of teaching.*Students realize that when they talk it makes others feel unappreciated.*Students learned that just trying to
get a “laugh” jeopardizes the learning of others
*Students realize that speaking out of turn shows a lack of self discipline.
Fudge eats Dribble!
