Just graduated and searching for that dream job? Wouldn’t it be a great advantage to know what recruiters are looking for? You’re in luck – we’re about to tell you!
1. Have a non-embarrassing social media presenceMore and more recruiters are doing online searches of candidates before asking them in for an interview. So if you’ve got an embarrassing social media presence, it’s time to do some spring cleaning. Tips: increase the security settings on your social profiles, or remove anything you wouldn’t want a recruiter to see. If you’re really concerned – try using a different name online!
2. Have a good attitudeSimple we know, but so important. Make sure you demonstrate that you are enthusiastic, friendly and professional during any interaction with the recruiter.
3. Strong communication skillsDemonstrate that you can write well, speak well and importantly, listen well. If you can do this, you will have already impressed the recruiter.
4. Do your researchThe recruiter will expect that you a basic understanding of what the company does, who their competitors are, and an understanding of the industry. You should also have a grasp of what the role you’re applying for will entail. Do your homework.
5. Volunteer or internship experienceGetting paid work in the right industries can be hard while you’re studying. But recruiters will be impressed if they see you’ve done volunteering or internship work to gain experience. The more experience you can collect before your first paid role the better.
6. Leadership experienceShow the recruiter that you have the potential to lead. You can demonstrate this through gaining experience as a leader within clubs and student organisations while at university. Recruiters admire those you can lead and love those who can demonstrate that they are good team players.
