Six Takeaways from START Fintech Conference 2017 Source: FGRT Fung Global Retail & Technology attended the START Fintech Conference 2017 Conference in Hong Kong. Below, we provide our key takeaways. 1) The consensus view of the speakers and panels was that startups and established incumbents are partners rather than competitors in the fintech revolution. Visa has been active in developing blockchain and artificial intelligence (AI), and has been opening its API platform for the developer community to tap into. 2) Singapore is accepting of failure in fintech experimentations. Grants can be given out, even if there is a high probability of failure, because they recognize that there is still knowledge to be gained. 3) Fintech is seen as an enabler for the financial industry in driving inclusive finance. Singapore-based remittance startup Toast seeks to serve the underbanked population and capture the US$29.8 billion remittance market. 4) Enterprises tend to be successful in driving innovation when there are internal champions to lead. A good example is for a company to have an internal champion speak with each business unit, identify pain points, make the right introductions and help manage the process of startups maneuvering through the organization. 5) HSBC and Octopus highlighted the social dimension of mobile payments which helps drive how quickly a country adopts mobile payments. 6) HSBC has been driving the use of blockchain in trade and supply-chain finance by creating a new level of trust and reducing the volume of paperwork.
