Positive Behavior SupportAt

Six Mile Charter Academy

Positive Behavior Support will provide a systematic method of defining, teaching, and rewarding expected behaviors. The original theories behind this approach to discipline were developed by a special education instructor; however, this type of plan is beneficial to ALL students.

Research shows students achieve at a higher level when they know the expectations and feel safe. PBS will help improve in both of these areas. Our plan provides detailed expectations in every area of the school.

The PBS plan at SMCA will focus on four areas…

1. Respect2. Responsibility3. Self Control4. Cooperation

And five locations.1. Classroom2. Hallways3. Cafeteria4. Restroom5. Buses

Mission Statement

Positive Behavior Support at SMCA will provide support to encourage success and enhance the educational experience of all students. Positive reinforcement will be given for good behaviors. Retraining through teacher-student talks will provide a time for reflection of negative behaviors.

Wildcat Citizen Card

Role of the Wildcat Citizen CardThe role of the Wildcat Citizen Card is to provide positive reinforcement of examples of good citizenship related to the student expectation matrix.

How to use the Wildcat Citizen CardWhen a student shows exemplary positive behavior in one of the following areas: responsibility, cooperation, respect or self-control (make good choices), a stamp should be placed over a wildcat in the appropriate category. If a student receives a stamp in each of the four categories, a prize will be given out. Then, when a student fills up the complete card, another prize will be received, and the card will be displayed in the school.

Other Information about Wildcat Citizen CardsWildcat Citizen Cards will be distributed by the Assistant Principal to the homeroom teacher at the beginning of the year. The cards should be stapled into student agenda books so the students will have them at all times.

PBS in the Classroom

Throughout the school year, students will be made clear of continuous expectations of PBS monitoring in the classroom. At the beginning of the school year, as well as an ongoing training, PBS will be explained and modeled for students to show growth in their positive behavior. However, there will also be consequences for students who choose to make poor choices.

School Day

At the beginning of the school year, the students’ homeroom teacher will have all 5 colors that represent the PBS system visible on his/her whiteboard. Students’ class numbers or names should be visible on the board in the center color of the PBS system. All students will start the day on the green color of the PBS color scheme at the beginning of each school day. Each child will have the opportunity on every school day to improve his/her behavior.

Behavior color scheme and pictures of PBS (Grade 3-5)

Purple = Home RunBlue = SingleGreen = At BatYellow = Foul BallRed = Strike

Red would represent the lowest color and purple would represent the highest color to be reached at the end of a school day.

Examples of how the PBS system works…

A student starts the day out on green and makes a poor choice by talking out of turn. The student would then be lowered to the color yellow.

For every poor choice that a student makes, the student is lowered one color, and a mark is made on the PBS Tracking Sheet.

The student who was moved down to the color yellow makes a responsible decision by helping to clean up the classroom and is now moved back up to the color green.

For every positive choice that a student makes, the student is moved up a color.

Red would represent the lowest color and blue would represent the highest color to be reached at the end of a school day.

The behavior system would work as follows:

- A child is moved down one color for each poor choice that he/she makes, and a mark is placed on the PBS Tracking Sheet.

- A child will be moved up a color for each positive choice that he/she makes.

Middle School PBS in the Classroom

WILDCAT CARD

The middle students will use a PBS card (located in agenda book) to track behaviors throughout the month. The card has 10 boxes, and inappropriate behaviors are tracked here. The teacher reporting the violation will contact the parents of the student via phone or email. If a contact isn’t made, it should be recorded on the wildcat card that a call was made; however, no one was reached. On the fourth and eighth violation, parent contact is made with notification of an after school detention. On the 10th violation a referral will be filled out by the teacher and sent to the Discipline Room where the Assistant Principal will arrange a conference with the parent and teachers to discuss intervention behaviors. The date of the detention needs to be recorded. Detentions need to be reported to the Assistant Principal and the middle school lead teacher.

A student with 3 or less checks on his/her card will be eligible for the PBS party. Each homeroom teacher is responsible for turning in a list of students who are not eligible for the PBS party to their team lead.

PBS Weekly Tracking Sheet and Celebrations

The PBS Weekly Tracking Sheet is used to determine which students are allowed to attend the PBS Celebration at the end of the month in grades K-5.When a student is moved down a level, the student receives a check on the weekly tracking sheet.

The following are intervention steps that coordinate with the weekly tracking sheet.1st Check Warning2nd Check Privilege Loss (K-2 maximum 5 minutes, 3-5 maximum 10 minutes)3rd Check Internal Time Out and Behavior Journal (grades 1-5)4th Check Phone Call to Parents by Student/Teacher5th Check Discipline Referral to Dean of Students

At the end of the month, any student who has received three or more checks may not participate in the celebration.

PBS Sheets will be submitted to the lead teacher of the appropriate grade level on every Friday. The lead teacher will compile a list of those students not attending the monthly PBS celebration and submit it to the Assistant Principal. One teacher, designated by the Assistant Principal, from each grade level will be responsible for watching the students who cannot attend the celebration. That teacher’s students will be divided amongst the other teachers in the grade level.

Celebrations may last 45 minutes for grades K-5. The middle school celebrations will be in place of the last period in the day. Grades K-5 may choose an appropriate time of the day for the celebration. Middle school students will report to homeroom. Middle School Lead Teachers will be in charge of assigning teachers to watch those students not participating in the celebrations in the their classroom.

BEHAVIOR JOURNALS

Behavior journals are completed after the third check, in one day, on the PBS Weekly Tracking Sheet for grades 1-5. The behavior journal allows the student to reflect on the inappropriate behavior, and it also notifies the parent/family of the student’s behavior. If a student does bring the behavior journal back to school the next day, a phone call/email is recommended along with another behavior journal. It is highly suggested that behavior journals are created on the computer and an initial copy is saved for records. An example is below.

STRIVE 65 Behaviors

Teachers will be given a copy of the STRIVE 65 behaviors. Each month there will be several behaviors for the students to concentrate on. At the end of each month please send the name of the student who exhibited the best behavior for each STRIVE characteristic to Mrs. Jones. Mrs. Jones will create a certificate for each student who exemplified STRIVE behavior. For more information on STRIVE, contact the STRIVE Champion, Kelly Stout.
