HISTORIA Y SITUACIÓN. Belorado se ubica al este de la provincia de Burgos, próximo a La Rioja en las estribaciones de la Sierra de la De-manda. De origen celtíbero, se confi gura como villa en la Edad Media época en la que se de-nominaba “Belforatus” “hermoso agujero”. Su apogeo económico fue temprano porque era cruce de caminos entre el valle agrícola y la sierra ganadera, por infl uencia del Camino de Santiago y porque estaba entre los reinos de Castilla y Navarra que favorecían a la villa para atraerla. Debemos hacer mención a la impor-tancia que tuvo la judería de esta localidad. En 1116, Alfonso I el Batallador (rey navarro-aragonés), le concedió el fuero y entre los pri-vilegios que recoge, le permite celebrar feria anual “la más antigua documentada en la his-toria de España”. Por su importancia en las pe-regrinaciones quedan en el sello concejil una torre y una estrella símbolo de Compostela, meta de los peregrinos, incluso la inscripción es alusiva: “Señor muéstrame tus caminos”. En la Edad Moderna, Belorado perteneció al Señorío de los Condestables de Castilla con-tando con importantes familias nobiliarias, de hecho se pueden contemplar algunas casas con escudos de gran calidad estética.

HISTORIA Y SITUACION. Belorado is located to the east of the province of Burgos, near to La Rioja on the foothils of the Sierra de la Demanda. Of Celtiberian origin, it became a town in the Middle Ages. When it was named “Belforatus” (beautiful whole). It enjoyed an early growth because it was on the crossroad between the agricultural valley and the mountains, by the infl uence of the Way of St. James and because it was located between two kingdoms (Castilla and Navarra) which favoured to the town. An important Jewish quarter was established in the lower section of Belorado. In 1116, Alfonso I, “the Fighting” (king of Navarra and Aragon), granted a law and among the privileges that gather, he allows to celebrate a fair. This fair is the oldest documented fair in the history of Spain. Due to the importance of the pilgrimage, a tower and a star, the symbol of Compostela, appears on the stamp, along with the following inscription: “Señor muéstrame tus caminos” (Lord show me your ways). In the Modern Age, Belorado belonged to the Señorio of the Condestables of Castile counting on important families of nobility. Today you can still see shields of great aesthetic quality carved into the facade of some houses.

IGLESIA DE SANTA MARÍA- S. XVI Renacen-tista. Planta salón. Erigida donde estuvo ubicada la capilla de la fortaleza de la que únicamente se conserva la talla gótica de Santa María que actualmente preside el altar mayor del s. XVI barroco. Interesantes capillas y sepulcros. En la capilla de Santia-go (plateresca) se encuentran iconografías de Santiago Peregrino y Santiago Mata-moros. CASTILLO- Podría haber sido cons-truido en el siglo IX durante el reinado de Alfonso III. Importante plaza fuerte en el sistema defensivo que se estableció en la comarca para vigilar el paso entre los rei-nos de Navarra y Castilla. Fue plaza del Cid. Queda parte de la torre homenaje. Desde este lugar se divisa una bella panorámica. CUEVAS DE SAN CAPRASIO, SAN VALENTÍN Y SANTA PÍA- En la época visigótica sirvie-ron de eremitorio a San Caprasio (obispo de Agen) y a sus compañeros anacoretas Santa Pía y San Valentín. BARRIO “EL CO-RRO”- La Judería se situó al pie del Cas-tillo cuyo Barrio “El Corro” recibe hoy el nombre de Ollerías Viejas. Estructura es-pacial casi sin modifi caciones hasta nues-tros días, conservando un aire pintoresco. RESTOS DE LA IGLESIA DE SAN NICOLÁS DE BARI- La más antigua de la villa. Queda parte de su fachada renacentista. PLAZA MAYOR- consolidada en la baja Edad Me-dia y el s. XVI. Es una plaza porticada que posee un perfi l propiamente castellano. CASA BLASONADA DE LOS SALAS Y CASA BLASONADA DE UNGO DE VELASCO- Am-bas con notable escudo nobiliario y ecle-siástico del siglo XVIII. IGLESIA DE SAN PE-DRO APÓSTOL- S. XIII Barroca. La antigua construcción medieval renovó su fábrica

HISTORIC, ARTISTIC AND CULTURAL HERITAGE CHURCH OF SANTA MARIA- 16th century Renaissance. This church was built over the ancient chapel of the fortress. The only remains of the chapel is the Gothic carving of Santa Maria that nowadays presides the Baroque main altarpiece (16th century). The church has interesting chapels and gravestones. The chapel of St James (plateresque style) contains iconographies of St. James Pilgrim and St. James the Moorslayer. CASTLE- The Castle which served as a fortress was probably built in the 9th century. In was an important stronghold in the defence system of the two kingdoms of Navarre and Castile. It was a stronghold of the famous hero El Cid. Today you can still see parts of the big center-tower. From up there you have a beautiful view over Belorado. CAVES OF SAINT CAPRASIO, SAINT VALENTIN AND SAINT PIA- It served as the hermitage for St Caprasio (Bishop of Agen) and his fellow anchorites St Pia and St Valentine during the Visigoth period. DISTRICT “EL CORRO”- The Jewish quarter was situated at the foot of the Castle whose neighbourhood, “El Corro”, is nowadays called “Ollerías Viejas”. Its spatial structure, which has hardly undergone any change, preserves a picturesque appearance.REMAINS OF THE CHURCH OF SAN NICHOLAS OF BARI- The oldest in town. The only remains are parts of its Renaissance facade. MAYOR SQUARE- 16th century. It is an arcaded square which has a strictly Castilian appearance. THE SALAS’ HOUSE WITH COAT OF ARMS AND THE UNGO THE VELASCO’S HOUSE WITH COAT OF ARMS- They have a remarkable coat of arms of 18th century. CHURCH OF SAN PEDRO APÓSTOL- 13th century Baroque. The original medieval

Aquí se detuvo San Bernardino de Siena en su peregrinaje a Compostela. Azarosa his-toria: incendios, ruinas, desamortización, subasta y desaparición. Uno de los cinco conventos de la primera Custodia Burga-lesa, fruto de las limosnas. Retablo actual-mente en la parroquia de Villafranca Mon-tes de Oca. ERMITA DE NUESTRA SEÑORA DE BELÉN- S. XII De origen medieval, fue hospital y Cofradía de los caballeros de la Orden de Santiago. Reconstruida siglo XVIII. Bonito camarín en donde se vene-ra con devoción una imagen gótica de la Virgen. Presbiterio cerrado por una reja del siglo XVIII del maestro Armentía. In-teresante Crucifi cado tardo románico de hacia 1200. CONVENTO DE SANTA MARÍA DE BRETONERA- S. XI Convento de clausu-ra regentado por monjas clarisas. Iglesia Gótica s. XVI visitable. Elaboran dulces de chocolate. PUENTE CANTO- Reconstruido por Santo Domingo ayudado por San Juan de Ortega en tiempos de Alfonso VI. Tuvo gran valor estratégico. ÁREAS DE DES-CANSO. Ubicada en el acceso al pueblo dispone de bancos y sombra. También a la salida del municipio, en el Puente Canto a la orilla del río Tirón se sitúa el área recrea-tiva “El Vivero” totalmente acondicionada.

Organ of Rococo style. WALL- 13th century. Uncertain origin. The two main doors were the Door of San Francisco and the Door of San Martin of which still today there are vestiges. CONVENT OF SAN FRANCISCO- 1250. St Bernardino of Sienna stopped here in his pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela. It has had an eventful history: fi res, ruins, confi scation, auction and disappearance. It was one of fi ve convents of the fi rst Custody of Burgos, and depended on alms. The altarpiece is nowadays in the parish of Villafranca Montes de Oca. SHIRNE OF NUESTRA SEÑORA DE BELEN- 12th century. Of medieval origin, it was a hospital and Brotherhood of the Order of Santiago. Rebuilt in the 18thcentury. There is a pretty niche where a Gothic image of the Virgin is venerated with devotion. The altar-section has been fenced off with a grate by 18th century master Armentia. There is also an interesting Christ on the Cross of the last part of the Romanesque period around 1200. CONVENT OF SANTA MARIA DE BRETONERA- 11th century. This convent of close is run by the sisters of St. Claire. Its 16th century Gothic church can be visited. The sisters produce sweets of chocolate. BRIDGE OF THE SINGING- Reconstructed by St Domingo helped by St Juan de Ortega in times of Alfonso VI. Strategic value. REST AREAS- Situated at the entrance to the town, this area offers benches and shade. Also on the outskirts of the municipality, on the Canto Bridge on the banks of the River Tirón there is a recreational area “El Vivero” totally equipped.

YACIMIENTO ARQUEOLÓGICO DE “LA MUELA” . La cronología de este yacimiento celtíbero podríamos situarla desde mediados del siglo IV a.C. hasta el siglo I d.C. Se localiza al norte del actual núcleo de población, donde se han encontrado diversos restos de cultura materiales como: cerámica de “cocina” (hecha a mano), cerámica elaborada a torno con decoración de motivos geométricos, man-gos para diversos útiles como punzones y hoces realizados en asta de ciervo y corzo, silbatos decorados con diversos motivos...

“LA MUELA” ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE. The timeline for this Celtiberian settlement dates from the Fifth Century BC to the First Century AC. It is located at the north of Belorado. Some materials have been found such as: ceramic made by hand and by potter’s wheel, handles for diverse equipment, whistles decorated with different designs...

“LA MESA” ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE We can approximately date back this Roman Site to the fi rst century A.D. until the fi fth century A.D., located to the west of Belorado. The most important discovery of this settlement is the large number of around thirty funeral remains, (tombstones), made with an unusual material, large blocks of alluvial quartz. You can visit the exhibition at the Tourist Offi ce. A tessera hospitalis, a card of hospitality, a bronze fi gure in the shape of a fi sh and bearing an inscription in Iberian characters was also found. Today this object is exposed in the museum of Burgos.

El municipio de Belorado cuenta con parte de su territorio incluido en la Red Natura 2000. Se trata del Lugar de Im-portancia Comunitaria (LIC) de las riberas del Tirón y afl uentes.El bosque de ribera alberga una de las mayores poblaciones mundiales de uno de los mamíferos más escasos de Europa: El Visón Europeo (mustela lutreola). La enorme biodiversidad que acogen estos ecosistemas queda refl ejada a través de paneles interpretativos.

Part of the territory of the municipality of Belorado is included in Red Natura 2000. It is a Site of Community Importance (SCI) on the banks of the Tirón River and its tributaries. The riverbank forest contains one of the most endangered species in Europe: the European mink (Mustela lutreola). The enormous biodiversity of these ecosystems is shown through numerous informative panels.

Complejo MineroDE PURAS DE VILLAFRANCA. Es la única

explotación minera de montaña que se puede visitar turísticamente en

España. En 2007 recibió el Primer Premio de recuperación del Pa-trimonio Cultural e Industrial de Castilla y León y más tarde en 2011 fue declarado Bien de Inte-rés Cultural. Gruesas vetas de mineral, barrenas y vagonetas

dan testimonio de la intensa ac-tividad minera que existió.

Es uno de los mayores tesoros espe-leológicos de la provincia de Burgos.La principal característica de esta cue-va es que se desarrolla en una masa de conglomerados calcáreos del Oli-goceno. Esto supone una gran rareza geológica que junto a sus más de 4 km de desarrollo la convierten en la sexta cueva del mundo en cuanto a su género. Si a lo anterior se le añade la belleza y profusión de formaciones, gours, excéntricas, coladas, estalacti-tas, estalagmitas y columnas, dejadas por la litogénesis en sus suelos, te-chos y paredes, es fácil hablar de una de las cuevas más importantes de su género a nivel mundial.

DE PURAS DE VILLAFRANCA Se en-cuentra señalizada como PR (peque-ño recorrido), marcas blancas y ama-rillas, de unos 14 Km. Difi cultad baja. Compuesta únicamente por hayas, se trata de la dehesa más extensa, de mayores y más maduros ejemplares existentes en la provincia de Burgos.

El GR 290 une las localidades de Be-lorado y Neila a lo largo de más de 70 km de bellos parajes. Patrimonio na-tural, artístico y cultural se funden a lo largo del recorrido, atravesando el Espacio Natural de la Sierra de la De-manda, el Parque Natural de las La-gunas Glaciares de Neila y enclaves patrimoniales como el Pozo Negro.

MINING COMPLEX OF PURAS DE VILLAFRANCA. It is the only mining

development of mountain that is possible for tourist to visit in Spain. In 2007 it received the First Prize of recovery of the Cultural and Industrial Heritage of Castilla y León. Declared Well of Cultural Interest in 2011. Thick seams of mineral, drills and trucks give testimony of the intense mining activity that has existed here.

BEECH-WOOD FOREST (PURAS DE VILLAFRANCA). It’s signalized as PR(small route), white and yellow marks, of about 14 km. Low diffi culty. Composed only by beeches, it is the largest beech-wood forest in Burgos and contains some of the largest and oldest beech trees in the region.

GR DOS AGUAS ROUTE GR 290 stretches between the towns of Belorado and Neila, covering more than 70 km of breathtaking landscapes. Natural, artistic and cultural heritage merge along the length of the route, as it wends it way across the Natural Space of Sierra de la Demanda, the Natural Park of the Glacial Lakes of Neila, and other heritage points such as the Black Well (Pozo Negro).

THE FUENTEMOLINOS CAVE. It is one of the greatest speleological treasures in the province of Burgos. The cave is developed in a mass of calcareous conglomerates deposited during the Oligocene this is its main feature. This is a major geological oddity with its 4 km. of development, and therefore it is the sixth cave in the world in terms of gender. Adding to the above the beauty and profusion of formations, gours, eccentrics, fl ows, stalactites, stalagmites and columns, we can say that Fuentemolinos is one of the most important caves in the world.

YACIMIENTO ARQUEOLÓGICO DE “LA MESA”. Este asentamiento roma-no podría datarse entre el siglo I d.C. y el siglo V d.C. Se localiza al oeste de Belorado. El hallazgo más importante de este asentamiento es el gran número (unas treinta) de estelas funerarias encontra-das, hechas de un material inusual, gran-des bloques aluviales de cuarcita. Se puede ver una nuestra en la Ofi cina de Turismo. También fue encon-trada una tésera hospitalis, una fi cha de hospitalidad realizada en bronce con forma de pez y una inscripción en caracteres ibéricos y lengua celtibérica; actualmente se expone en el Museo de Burgos.

PASEO DEL ÁNIMO. Con la fi nalidad de acoger y animar al peregrino en su arduo Camino a Santiago, en Belorado se ha plasmado una iniciativa pionera y única en un elemento Patrimonio de la Humanidad. Se trata de un mosaico de baldosas distribuidas en el tramo urbano del Camino de Santiago en Belorado. Estas baldosas de bronce contienen las huellas de la mano “símbolo de la acogida” y del pie “como acompañamiento testimonial de las personas que dejan su huella” así como las fi rmas de personas que han impulsado el Camino de Santiago, personas relevantes de la sociedad, y peregrinos anónimos. es un homenaje a todos ellos y a todos los peregrinos que realizan el Camino. THE WALK OF COURAGE. Is a unique and pioneering initiative in a Heritage item. A mosaic tile on the urban section of the Camino de Santiago in Belorado. At this “Paseo del Ánimo” there will be handprints (which symbolise welcome) and footprints (which symbolise company) from famous people, relevant people for the development of the Camino de Santiago and unknown pilgrims. It will be a tribute not only for them but for all the pilgrims who do the Camino.

FIESTAS, FOLCLORE Y GASTRONOMIA. El 25 Enero se celebra la festividad de la Virgen de Belén, patrona de Belorado. San Vitores pa-trón del pueblo el 26 Agosto y las Fiestas de Gracias comienzan el jueves anterior al pri-mer domingo de Septiembre. El folclore tiene su manifestación más genuina en el momen-to de “El Arranque” que es el salto inicial de un antiguo baile previo al pasacalle en las fi estas de Gracias. En él participa un grupo de ocho danzadores dirigidos por el “cachibirrio”. Morcilla y caparrones son los productos típi-cos del pueblo sin olvidar los productos de la huerta y como postre los dulces de chocolate realizados por la monjas Clarisas.FESTIVITIES, FOLKLORE AND GASTRONOMY. On January 25 the festivity of the Virgin of Belen, patron saint of Belorado is celebrated.San Vitores patron saint of the town on August 26th and the Festivities of Graces begin on Thursday previous to the fi rst Sunday of September. The folklore fi nds its most authentic expression in the moment of “El Arranque” that is the initial jump of a former dance before the parade in the Festivities of Graces. A group of eight dancers perform this dance directed by the “Cachibirrio”. Black pudding and “caparrones” (a kind of beans) are the typical products of the town without forgetting the products of the garden and as dessert the sweets of chocolate made by the nuns of St Clare.

CENTRO DE INTERPRETACIÓN DE MOLINO Y FRAGUA. MUSEO ET-NOGRÁFICO DE SAN MIGUEL DE PEDROSO. Es un molino harinero de cereal de origen medieval. El más antiguo en funcionamien-to de Castilla y León. En 1994, se crea el Museo Etnográfi co. El museo da acogida a numerosos objetos utilizados en el pueblo, a través del tiempo y a paneles so-bre la fauna y la fl ora de la zona.

CENTER OF INTERPRETATION OF MILL AND FORGE. ETHNOGRAPHIC MUSEUM OF SAN MIGUEL DE PEDROSO. It is a medieval fl our mill of cereal. It is the most ancient operating in Castile and León. The Ethnographic Museum was created in 1994. Inside there are numerous objects used in the town in the past and panels showing the fauna and fl ora of the area.
