21 days of prayer and fasting

Dear HCC Family,

Happy New Year! As we begin 2019 our desire is to hear from God afresh and anew. Jeremiah 29:13 says, "You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart." God does not play heavenly hide-n-seek, nor does He take pleasure in hiding His plan or His power from us. He longs for us to seek Him, to put Him first, and to get to know Him better (Phil. 3:10).

One of the ways the Scriptures teach us to seek God is through prayer and fasting. This year, we desperately de-sire for God to manifest His presence, His power and His plan for our lives and ministry. Therefore, we would like to begin the year by setting aside 21 days for prayer and fasting.

This booklet is a prayer guide. I trust it will help you to seek God through His Word, to depend upon Him in your weakness and to cry out to Him in prayer. Our goal is not just to pray, but also to pray believing!

Why Fast?

You will see me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart. Jeremiah 29:13

Admittedly, fasting is a lost discipline. I must confess that I have never been one who has regularly fasted. Quite frankly, I am not alone; most Christians do not regularly practice fasting. Is fasting a discipline that followers of Je-sus should practice? If so, why? And how should it be done?

1. Biblical reasons to fast

· Jesus expects His followers to fast

Matthew 9:15 - And Jesus said to them, "Can the wed-ding guests mourn as long as the bridegroom is with them? The days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast. "

· Fasting reveals the things that control you.

Job 23:12 - I have treasured the words of His mouth more than my necessary food.

Psalm 69:10 - I wept and humbled my soul with fast-ing.

We tend to cover up what is inside us with food and other good things, but fasting exposes our idols, our weaknesses and our sinful desires.

· Fasting enables you to better seek God

Daniel 9:3 - Then I turned my face to the Lord God seeking Him by prayer and pleas for mercy with fast-ing and sackcloth and ashes.

Joel 2:12 - Yet even now, declares the Lord, "return to me with all you heart, fasting, with weeping, and with mourning."

2. Types of fasts

Biblical fasting refers to abstaining from food for spiritual purposes. There are several of types fasts mentioned in Scripture.

· A Complete Fast (Matt. 4:1, 2) - A complete fast refers to not eating any food for a specified period of time.

· A Partial Fast (Daniel 10:2,3) - A partial fast can be done several ways...

ÞYou can decide to not eat for a part of the day (sun up till sun down).

ÞYou can decide to not eat certain foods (Avoid meat or sweets, eat only fruits and vegetables.)

· A Practical Fast - You can fast from television or social media or from watching sports.

Finally, let me remind you that fasting without spending extra time in worship, Bible reading and prayer is only a

diet. May God drive us to seek Him, know Him and de-pend more fully upon Him.

Day 1 Scripture: Psalm 139:1-23

Today, as you begin your fast, ask the Holy Spirit to exam-ine your heart and reveal any sins in your life that you need to confess to the Lord (I John 1:9).

Special Request: Pray for God to draw your family close to Him.

Day 2Scripture: Psalm 51:1-19



Realize today that your sin is against God. He is the one who is most offended by your wrongdoing. Ask the Holy Spirit to give you a sensitive heart to know when He is of-fended.

Special Request: Pray for God to unify your family in your desire to please and serve Him.




How wonderful to know your sin is forgiven! Because of Jesus, God will never again accuse or condemn you (Ro-mans 8:1). Take a moment and praise Him for a clean heart.

Special Request: Pray for God to give you a servant's heart to minister to family and friends.

Day 4Scripture: Romans 5:1-11



In Jesus you have been given peace with God. He also has given you access to enter into His presence at any time. Prayer, then, is a direct result and privilege of your posi-tion in Christ.

Special Request: Pray for God to enable you to build friendships with your neighbors.

Day 5

Scripture: Romans 8:1-11



One of the great evidences of your new life in Christ is the indwelling Holy Spirit (Eph. 1:13, 14). His job is to make you like Jesus. Thank Him for His work in your life.

Special Request: Pray for others to see the love of Jesus shine through your life.

Day 6Scripture: Romans 8:12-17



Take a moment and thank the Lord for your position as His child and an heir. As a result His abundant power and resources are available you. Of course, that may mean you must suffer with Him.

Special Request: Pray for God to enable you to fully un-derstand your position in Christ.

Day 7 Scripture: Romans 8:18-30

One of God's most amazing attributes is His sovereignty. He not only perfectly plans your future but also uses all that happens to you for your benefit and His glory. Thus you can trust Him even during the difficulties of life.

Special Request: Pray for God to use every situation of your life to make you like Him.

Day 8 Scripture: Romans 8:31-39

There is nothing that can separate us from the love of Christ! Meditate on this thought and allow it to transform your mind about how God views you and loves you.

Special Request: Pray for God to remind you of His great love.

The more you know the Lord, the more you will desire to know Him more (Phil. 3:10). Today, ask the Lord to give you a hunger and a thirst for Him.

Special Request: Pray for God to bless your neighbors and give them a greater desire to know Him.

It is difficult to "be still" before the Lord. Yet it is in those moments of stillness and quiet that He powerfully reveals Himself to you. Ask God to help you know He is God.

Special Request: Pray for God to bless the marriages of those who live on your street.




A thirst for God will drive you to spend time with Him on your own and with God's people. The more you know the more you desire to praise Him. He alone is worthy!

Special Request: Pray the Holy Spirit to cause the fami-lies on your street to recognize their need of Jesus.



How can I apply this to my life?

God's love for you is faithful in spite of your unfaithfulness. You will never deserve and you don't have to earn it. Take a moment and thank Him for His steadfast love.

Special Request: Pray for broken families in your commu-nity. Ask God to restore them and turn to Him.

Day 13Scripture: Isaiah 40:1-31

As we wait on God and fully trust Him, He promises to re-new our strength. He gives us the ability, the energy and the determination to walk for Him and serve Him.

Special Request: Pray for your family members to grow deeper in their relationship with Jesus.

Day 14Scripture: Isaiah 42:1-13

Jesus quoted part of this chapter as His mission statement (Luke 4:18, 19). Realize that God desires to use you to make a difference in His kingdom.

Special Request: Pray for God to use you as a citizen of His kingdom to bring freedom to those who are oppressed.

Day 15 Scripture: Matthew 5:1-12

These verses are called the Beatitudes. They lay out God's desire to bless those who seek Him with all their heart. Today, ask the Lord to cause you to hunger and thirst for Him.

Special Request: Pray for God to give you more of a de-sire for Him than for the food you eat.

Day 16Scripture: Matthew 5:13-16

As citizens of Jesus' Kingdom we should function as salt and light. Salt purifies and creates thirst, while light shines into the darkness. Let's be salt and light for Jesus!

Special Request: Pray that God would use your life to cre-ate a thirst for Jesus in the lives of those around you.

Notice that Jesus' prayer includes praise, confession and petition. Make sure your prayers are focused on Jesus' will and not just yours.

Special Request: Pray for God's kingdom to come in Hol-lywood as it is in Heaven.




It is impossible to demonstrate loyalty to two masters. Who is the real master of your life? Who are you serving? Make sure your loyalty is to Jesus.

Special Request: Pray that God would enable you to lay up treasures in Heaven.




The command to ask is found in the present tense. It is something we should continually do. Don't give up pray-ing! Ask, seek, knock and believe God to answer your prayer.

Special Request: Pray for God to help you to persevere and be faithful in prayer.




There is no greater foundation upon which you can build your life than the words and the teaching of Jesus. Spend time in His Word and build your house on a solid rock!

Special Request: Pray that God's word would strengthen you giving you a solid foundation for the storms of life.

Day 21 Scripture: Ephesians 4:1-16



The Church is the Body of Christ and the Bride of Christ. It is the gymnasium for discipleship. God uses His church to help you grow in your walk with Him. Take a moment to-day and thank the Lord for HCC.

Special Request: Pray for God to bless and use Holly-wood Community Church.
