Site Supervisor Workshop

Site Supervisor WorkshopDepartment of Counselor Education

Thank you for taking the time to participate in this Site Supervisor Workshop provided by the Department of Counselor Education at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. The supervision that you provide to our students is instrumental in their development as counselors. This presentation is designed to assist you, our site supervisors, by providing information about the supervision process, including what is expected of practicum and internship students, site supervisors, and faculty supervisors. This slideshow should take approximately 15 minutes to complete. Following the presentation, you will be directed to a website to complete a short online questionnaire.1OVERVIEWPracticum/Internship OverviewEvaluation FormsConducting Supervision Sessions

Lets get started. First, we will provide you with an overview of the practicum and internship experiences including direct and indirect hourly requirements., We will then cover the specific evaluation forms which will be completed by you and the student during the practicum and internship experiences. Finally, we will discuss the various requirements for conducting supervision sessions with practicum and internship students. 2PRACTICUM/INTERNSHIP DETAILSHours required for PracticumRequirements for transitioning from practicum to internshipHour required for InternshipPracticum forms and timelinesInternship forms and timelines

All students in the Department must complete a counseling practicum and a counseling internship. The practicum consists of 100 clock hours of supervised practice over the course of one semester. Of the 100 hours, 40 hours must be in direct contact with clients. Students must complete the practicum before moving on to internship. The internship consists of 600 clock hours of counseling-related activity, where the emphasis is on training rather than service. Internship requires 600 total hours with 240 direct contact hours and can be completed in 1 to 3 semesters.

Site supervisors are required to complete a form titled: Evaluation of Practicum/Internship Experience twice each semester. The form is completed at midterm and again at the end of the semester. A link to this form can be found later in this presentation. Additionally, site supervisors are required to meet with each supervisee for a minimum of one hour per week to view supervisee videos and sign the Internship/Practicum Weekly Activity Report which details how the supervisee allocated his or her time at your site for that particular week.

3REVIEWING VIDEOStudents are required to present videos of their sessions each week to youStudents should show a different video each week to their supervisor unless given permission to do otherwise from their instructorsVideo reviews will be documented on the Internship/Practicum Weekly Activity Report.

Supervisees are required to present videos of their sessions each week to their site supervisors. During this time, the site supervisor should focus on providing feedback to the supervisee regarding the development of their clinical skills. Supervisees will also reviewing session videos in their practicum/internship classes in order to receive feedback from a variety of perspectives. The videos presented in practicum/internship classes should be different from those shared with site supervisors unless given permission to do otherwise from the faculty supervisor. Video reviews will be one of the activities documented on the Internship/Practicum Weekly Activity Report.

4EVALUATION FORMSEVALUATION OF PRACTICUM/INTERN EXPERIENCESITE EVALUATIONINTERNSHIP/PRACTICUM WEEKLY ACTIVITY REPORT

Copies of the various evaluation forms can be found by clicking on any of the links on this slide. The Evaluation of Practicum/Internship Experience form is designed to provide site supervisors with a tool with which to provide feedback to supervisees regarding their clinical skills and their professionalism. The Site Evaluation form provides students a way to rate the site using criteria typically considered to be salient during their practicum and internship experience. As noted previously, the Internship/Practicum Weekly Activity Report is completed weekly by the supervisee and reviewed with the site supervisor. This form provides both the supervisee and the supervisor with a record of how the supervisees time has been spent during the week.5HOW TO COMPLETE EVALUATION FORMSWhat would a counselor be doing to demonstrate the evaluation item? What would a good example be?What would a not so good example be?

When completing the evaluation forms, it can be helpful to identify specific behaviors demonstrated by the supervisee that are associated with each item rather than trying to rate each item globally. Typically, if you can recall multiple instances of the supervisee demonstrating or not demonstrating a behavior associated with any item, it will help to guide you as you complete the form. As you rate each item, ask yourself the following questions:What would a counselor be doing to demonstrate the evaluation item? What would a good example be?What would a not so good example be?

6USING THE EVALUATION OF PRACTICUM/INTERNSHIP EXPERIENCEScale2 means something occurs appropriately and consistently 1 means something occurs appropriately but not consistently0 means something that is appropriate does not occur at allN means that you have not had the opportunity to observe that particular criterion

When you take a look at the rating options on the Evaluation of Practicum/Internship Experience form, you can see why the practice of identifying behaviors associated with each item can be helpful. A score of 2 means that the supervisee demonstrates the skill or characteristic in question consistently and predictably. A score of 1 indicates that the supervisee demonstrates the skill or characteristic in question at times, but does not do so consistently. A score of 0 means that the skill or characteristic in question was not demonstrated when it would have been appropriate to do so. A score of N is indicated when there has been no opportunity to observe the skill or characteristic in question.

As a general rule, one would expect ratings on the Evaluation of Practicum/Internship Experience form to vary among students at different developmental stages or with different skill levels. For example, it should be a rare occurrence for any particular student to receive the best available rating for each item listed on the evaluation such as a rating of 2 for every item on the Evaluation of Practicum/Internship Experience. It is important that developing counselors-in-training receive meaningful, useful feedback regarding both their strengths and weaknesses.7CONDUCTING SUPERVISIONThings to ask the supervisee:What are the client demographics? (e.g., age, gender, grade, race, marital status, occupation)What is the nature of the client's difficulties. What led to the development of the issue? Who else may be involved? What is your hypothesis? (i.e., what do you think is going on with this client?)

The supervision process can be complex and difficult for both site supervisors and supervisees as you assist in the conceptualization of client problems. Some questions that might help both you and your supervisee to engage in case conceptualization are as follows:What are the client demographics? What is the nature of the client's difficulties. What led to the development of the issue? Who else may be involved?Overall, what do you think is going on with this client?

8CONDUCTING SUPERVISIONWhat are the most important client strengths and assets and how can you use them therapeutically? What are the highlights of the client's background that may contribute to the present situation? How might multicultural factors such as gender, age, religion, and ethnicity impact the client or impact you and your view of the client?

Several other questions you might explore with the supervisee are:What are the most important client strengths and assets and how can you use them therapeutically? What are the highlights of the client's background that may contribute to the present situation? How might multicultural factors such as gender, age, religion, and ethnicity impact the client impact you and your view of the client?

9CONDUCTING SUPERVISIONWhat emotional, cognitive, and behavioral patterns, strengths, and difficulties are characteristic of the client? What clinical skills did you use to address the clients difficulties? Give examples. What specific questions, concerns, or other clinical issues do you want feedback on?

Additional questions can include:What emotional, cognitive, and behavioral patterns, strengths, and difficulties are characteristic of the client? What clinical skills did you use to address the clients difficulties? Give examples. What specific questions, concerns, or other clinical issues do you want feedback on?
