MASS INTENTIONS FOR THE WEEK

APPALACHIAN MISSION DRIVE SATURDAY, OCTOBER 22, 2016

This fall's drive will be Saturday, October 22, 2016 from 8:00 AM until noon. Thank you from KY for your support. For more information, see the sign above the poor box in the back of the church or go to http://www.fbamc-ky.org. For large items, please call 703-542-7955. In addition to your donations of furniture, household items and non-perishable food, volunteers are needed to help pack boxes and/or load the truck. Previous drives have been quite successful and there is a need for many hands to make the work a little lighter. Please email [email protected] if you can help. Thanks again.

Peace and good! As we conclude this month of celebration for our newest saint in the Roman Catholic Church, Saint Teresa of Calcutta, let us reflect upon the challenge of Jesus’ parable of the rich man and Lazarus. The point of the parable is to no-tice Lazarus at our door and to reach out to him/her while there is still time. Saint Teresa of Calcutta understood and lived out this challenge of reaching out to the neighbor in need. As we were challenged in last weekend’s Gospel, Lazarus is at our door.

• Lazarus is one of the more than one million children who are homeless in America, who sleep every night on our streets.

• Lazarus is one of the millions of Americans who have no access to health care, who must choose between buying her heart medicine and putting food on her table.

• Lazarus is an acquaintance who lost his job through down-sizing and has just taken out a second mortgage.

• Lazarus is an elderly woman or man who is in a nursing home now for ten years where no one visits.

• Lazarus is our next door neighbor who recently lost his wife of forty years and hangs around the driveway as we come home, looking for company.

Jesus calls us to notice Lazarus at our door and to reach out and cross the gulf that isolates us from him/her. We cannot be expected to reach out to the millions of people without health care or the tens of millions who are dealing with grief. But we can be expected:

• To notice the Lazarus who sits at our door. • To ask: Who is she? Who is he? What is her name?

What is his name? You know it. The name may be coming to your mind right now. There is good news and challenging news in today’s gospel.

• The challenging news is that we may be ignoring people who are close to us and who are in need.

• The good news is that there is still time to help others. Lazarus is at our door. Jesus calls us to notice this individual and let our love make a difference. Reach out, cross the gulf that presently separates you from them. Saint Teresa of Calcutta challenges us: “Never worry about numbers. Help one person at a time, and always start with the person nearest you.” Saint Teresa – Pray for us! In the peace of Francis of Assisi,

Mercy – Wellspring of Joy – Francis of Assisi

In his official decree of the Jubilee Year of Mercy, Pope Francis stated:

We need constantly to contemplate the mystery of mercy. It is a wellspring of joy, serenity, and peace… At times we are called to gaze even more attentively on mercy so that we may become a more effective sign of the Father’s action in our lives.

No one was more keenly aware of this than Saint Francis. It was his care for the poor, his generosity toward others, and his embrace of the leper that filled his heart with gladness which provides us with a visible sign of God’s mercy. Francis’ em-brace of mercy brings joy – to the giver as much as to the re-cipient. This is why Pope Francis speaks of mercy as a mys-tery and why we need the example of Saint Francis to show us that a seemingly difficult act can reveal God’s grace among us. Scripture: Mark 1:40-42

A leper came to Jesus (and kneeling down) begged him and said, “If you wish, you can make me clean.” Moved with pity [mercy], he stretched out his hand, touched him, and said to him, “I do will it. Be made clean.” The leprosy left him immediately, and he was made clean.

From The Legend of the Three Companions:

One day [Francis] was riding his horse near Assisi, when he met a leper. And, even though he usually shuddered at lepers, he made himself dismount, and gave him a coin, kissing his hand as he did so. After he accepted a kiss of peace from him, Francis remount- ed and continued on his way. He then began to consider himself less and less, until, by God’s grace, he came to complete victory over himself. After a few days, he moved to a hospice of lepers, taking with him a large sum of money. Calling them all together, as he kissed the hand of each, he gave them alms. . . . With the help of God’s grace, he became such a servant and friend of the lepers, that, as he testified in his Testament, he stayed among them and served them with humility. (p. 74)

Prayer: Pope Francis’ Prayer for the Jubilee Year of Mercy (Abbreviated)

Lord Jesus Christ, You have taught us to be merciful like our heavenly Father, and have told us that whoever sees you sees Him. Show us Your face and we will be saved. Amen.

RCIA SPONSORS NEEDED

Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is the process by which adults come into the Church. After meeting weekly for instruction (Wednesday 7-9 p.m.) and being introduced into the Catholic way of faith, life, and worship, the unbaptized will receive the Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist) during the Easter Vigil.

Every adult needs a sponsor. As a representative of the faith community, the sponsor is a companion on the journey to full membership. Sponsors attend the weekly ses-sions and participate in the liturgical rites. Sponsors offer advice and encouragement and grow together with their catechumen or candi-date as they share the various experiences of the meeting: learning, sharing and growing in prayer.

Won’t you share your faith with someone who wishes to join the Church but has no one to journey with him? If interested you may contact Mr. Reye Ruiz by phone at (703) 880-4332 or email him at [email protected].
