MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

Greetings! I hope this message finds you healthy and well as we continue the return to some sense of normalcy. Our 2019-2020 fiscal year was definitely not the year we had planned for SIRE, but in spite of all the challenges, we finished our fiscal year strong. The pandemic impacted so much this year, and SIRE was no exception. To address the situation, the board took two major proactive steps. First, we accelerated the planned closure of the Hockley site and placed it up for sale. Second we relocated the Fort Bend location to a temporary site due to the Covid-related closures at the Richmond State Supported Living Center, and we began a search for a more permanent home in Fort Bend County. The good news is that following a short break in late spring, SIRE resumed classes on a limited basis in June 2020 in accordance with CDC guidelines. We remain committed to the Strategic Plan we approved in 2019 and are making great strides. One of the pillars of the plan is improved infrastructure. To that end, I am pleased to report we are break-ing ground at our Spring location for the new LGI Education and Visitors Center. This is the first in a series of improvements needed to provide excellent programs to many more people in the community. Another success was our equine-assisted programs for those with mental or behavioral needs. We are particularly pleased with the strong partnership developed with the Harris County Department of Education, that brings students to our facilities for services. Based on our experiences this year, we

expect to see continued success and growth in these programs which are meeting growing community needs for mental and emotional health programs. We learned a lot of lessons this past year. On the fun side, we learned that horses can Zoom, and riders were happy to be able to keep in touch with their friends via video! These virtual sessions were vital to maintaining the connection between riders and horses. While it wasn’t the same as an actual riding session, it was much-needed therapy for everyone. We also learned what an essential role SIRE plays in the lives of everyone we touch: riders, volunteers and families. Our dedicated staff and volunteers worked tirelessly to resume in-person classes safely and get back to serving our clients as quickly as possible. It is my honor to serve as President of such a wonderful organization, and on behalf of the entire board of directors, we are happy to have you on the journey with us.

It is an inspiring time at SIRE, thanks largely to the generosity of foundations, corporations, and individuals. The spirit of generosity is creating a robust future for our riders and is having a lasting impact on hundreds of families across Houston.

When SIRE instructors matched up a new rider named Steven with Jet, one of our veteran horses, it was a match made in heaven. Steven lives with cerebral palsy and spends most of his life in a wheelchair. Having never been close to a horse before there was a bit of trepidation during Steven’s first meeting with Jet. Anxiety was soon relieved as Jet nuzzled Steven as if to say, “I am here for you, and it will all be okay.”

This relationship between the horses at SIRE and the riders, volunteers, and staff Is not unique. The bond between a human and horse is unequivocally a major component in why therapeutic riding changes lives. As Pat Parelli once said “There’s nothing you can’t do when the horse becomes a part of you.”

SIRE’s herd of specially trained therapy horses is pivotal to the success riders experience at SIRE. The exceptional care our horses receive includes special diets, regular hoof and veterinary care, plenty of pasture time as well as massage and chiropractic treatments.

After performing in the show ring, on the polo field or as trusted family companions,our SIRE horses are thriving in a new career that gives them renewed purpose well into their golden years.

Thank you to those donors who sponsored many of our horses throughout the year to help guarantee the health and well-being of these magnificent animals as they work to make life better for all who interact with them.

STATISTICS AFFIRM LIFE-CHANGING RESULTS

“My son’s anxiety is so much lower when riding, and he has learned self-control so much so that I have not had to bear-hold him in over a year,” wrote a parent. “There are so many ways that riding at SIRE has helped.”

Our 2019-20 rider survey results showed that the significant majority of the respondents expe-rience physical, psychological and emotional, or social benefits in their daily lives away from SIRE. These tremendous results exceed or are on par with last year’s results.

MAJOR ACCOMPLISHMENTS

“Riding at SIRE is an activity that provides our son an opportunity to become more independent,” wrote one rider’s parent. “After riding, he is less fidgety and sleeps well that night. We have been so pleasantly surprised at how far he has come with his riding. It gives us such hope that he will con-tinue to become more independent.”

Survived pandemic so far. Classes resumed in June on a very limited basis. Used Zoom meetings and virtual lessons to maintain contact between riders and their horses.

Implemented and expanded Equine-Assisted Learn-ing program for at-risk children. This program helps students learn positive behaviors, emotional regula-tion, and trust.

Organizationally we have taken the first steps to im-prove the Spring location to better serve clients.

Three of our instructors were certified as an Equine Specialist in Mental Health and Learning. This will increase our abilit y to serve more people suffering from mental health issues. It will also help us to rec-ognize mental health issues in our current riders.
