One of the benefits of these many Spider-Man variants

from Hot Toys is the ability to experiment with materials that may go on to have another use

on other characters down the line. The Spider-Armour Mk.IV features a reflective finish right across the figure which gives off a metallic sheen in normal light and when under certain LED lighting, will reveal a luminous web pattern, making this one of the more

technical releases in this line-up. The figure also comes

the closest to the classic Red & Blue outfit worn by Spider-Man in so many of his story arc’s so that in-itself, makes this a variant well worth picking up, even more so if you’re coming at this from a gaming standpoint. Now at the time of writing, this figure is

not released and we’ve only seen

which show the luminous effect with the figure out on display at Hot Toys Secret Base so it will be interesting to see how it holds up amongst regular collectors. Again, over time this figure may well suffer from the joint creasing but time will tell on that but hopefully this experiment pays off for Hot Toys and it will open the door for further characters down the line who feature a more complex design so we’re very much looking forward to see this guy in-hand.

L ooking over your working timeline

we can see that you’ve collaborated with some massive brands including

Hasbro, Nike, Sony & Marvel. How did you develop your abilities to be able to have something to offer those platforms?

I did about ten years of drawing comic books before stepping into toy and game work? Comic books are a very fast paced work environment, with lots of challenging things to draw. You are really trying to capture a story in the most dynamic way. Most properties are trying to do that in one form or anoth-er, you are just changing the format of how you tell that story. You are just trying to adapt the story from the client to the format of their offering, and find the best way to say what needs to be said.

What has the been the most surreal moment in your relation-ships with all these brands? The moment where you had to step back and think “Damn, is this really happening?”

Every once in a while I would see giant banners somewhere? At Comic-con or at Toy fair or something they will have giant banner of the Black series pieces I have done. It crazy to see them that big. I went for a run the other day and saw my Angry Orchard tree on the side of a tractor trailer, that was pretty nuts.

Hi Gregory, a huge thank you for taking the time to chat to us and our audience and a big welcome to the Exclu Magazine. Let’s start with some of the basics for those

who perhaps are unaware of your work, tell us a bit about your background.

The list of brands is really quite amazing and a huge accomplishment but we’re sure you’ve still got a lot of professional goals to achieve, would you care to explain a few to us?

Well I have recently got to do some book covers which was a new milestone for me, I would love to try and do a few more of those, play in that world a little longer. I have been doing a lot of concept art lately as well, which is really fun. I enjoy design-ing characters, and developing them fully. I have also been getting back into comics again as well. Comics is my first love, and it will always be my artistic touchstone. Its basically where I learned almost everything I know, so I would like to come back to it in one form or another. My goal for the next year or so is to get back to drawing and painting a little more for myself and to assemble a few sketchbooks or art books.

In 2002, Toy Biz reinvented action figures with their highly detailed 6-inch line of action figures called Marvel Legends.

Each figure came packed with super poseablili-ty, a comic book and diorama stand. They were like small super-poseable statues with collector friendly clam shell packaging.

Now, we look back to put together a list of our favorite Marvel Legends released by Toy Biz from 2002 to 2006.

This is our list of the 10 best Toy BizMarvel Legends.

FIGURE FACT:Inspired by Spider-Man Classics Series 1 & 2, Toy Biz started the Marvel Legends toy line in 2002 using the same approach with the clam-shell packaging and includ-ed a comic book with each figure. This is where the legend began.

W hile all the kaiju were uniquely designed to match the televi-

sion counterparts, it was the monster Gomora that is the true masterpiece of the group. The Godzilla-esque kaiju articulated well with a tail segmented into 13 distinct points of articulation that allowed for various posing and tail action. Additionally, Gomora came with a damaged tail piece that looks realistic and makes this figure a true gem.

The ant/beetle-like Antlar was another figure that is a particularly notable for its detailed design and likeness to the actual costume used in the show. The thorax and antennae are impressive even for a line of figures that excels in being detail orientated.In truth it is Bandai’s ability to sculpt stunningly realistic detail while maintaining the figures articulation and usability.

Detail that in some cases that can be difficult to distinguish from statues. While many companies have mastered either one or the other, design over function or vice versa, how many can claim to do both? How many have added that all important action to the figure?

To be simultaneously posable and displayable is no easy feat. There is a balance that the SHFiguarts line handles extremely well, and in the kaiju for the Ultraman line this is perfectly on display.

For those interested in adding these figures as permanent residents, the road to collector nirvana is paved with gold. One just has to find and follow the appropriate yellow-brick road. All are available in one way or another on the secondary market while Baltan and Zetton remain available through major retailers. The market for Tamashii exclusives ever only moves higher. In addition the release of the Netflix series has renewed interest in the older shows as they are able to be viewed online.

Is there hope for more kaiju? Perhaps. Bandai has dedicated resources into the amazingly detailed SHMonsterArts line and have been steadily releas-ing Ultraman related figures though the last kaiju released was in July 2019 with Black King. Could a return to the 1966 series be on the horizon? 2021 is the 55th anniversary so fingers crossed.
