HOT COTTAGE DEBUTON LONDON RECORDSEdmonton -based blues group Hot Cottagehave released their first record and achievedimmediate play on five area radio stations."Joe Chicago", recorded with Hot Cottageand guest -star Walter (Shakey) Horton, gained playlistings at CHED, CKUA, CERN,CHFA and CKSR. The single, out on London,is part of an album recorded by Hot Cottageand Walter Horton.

The recording of "Joe Chicago" is interestingbecause it represents a breakthrough for theCanadian record industry. For the first time,a Canadian disc is being listed in the dis-cography of "Blues Unlimited", one of themost respected blues magazines in the world. The recent success of groups like Crowbar,King Biscuit Boy and Whiskey Howl hasshown that there is a demand for blues -based music in this country, and Hot Cottagehope to cash in on this trend.

Walter Horton, the blues harp artist recordingwith Hot Cottage, is now in his mid -fiftiesand began recording in 1929 with thelegendary "Memphis Jug Band". He hasmade records with just about every blackbluesman, but has recorded with only ahandful of white musicians. He can beheard on Johnny Winters' first LP forColumbia, as well as on "Fleetwood Macin Chicago". Hot Cottage is his third LPin this category.

Production on the session was handled byformer Edmonton radio announcer HolgerPeterson. Peterson is gaining quite a reputa-tion in this field, with recent sessions byblack -oriented band "Whozit", Edmontonsinger Winston Reese and by Toronto nativeJoe Hall.

GENE MACLELLAN FEATUREDON "SINGALONG JUBILEE"Wednesday, December 6th, CBC-TV's popu-lar series "Singalong Jubilee" will salute GeneMacLellan, one of Canada's most outstandingsongwriter -performers. The entire programconsists of MacLellan compositions, andfeatures him in the solo guest spot. Genefirst gained recognition in the entertainmentworld through regular appearances on "Singa-long ", and since then has been a featuredguest on most of Canada's major TV varietyshows, as well as playing many concertsacross Canada and the U.S.

Gene's major interest, and the most reward-ing part of his career, is writing. His abilityin this field is reflected by the fact thatsongs like "Bidin' My Time", "The Call","Put Your Hand in the Hand" and "Snow-bird" have all been major hit records.

For his appearance on Singalong Jubilee,Gene sings Isle of St. Jean, ", "Bidin' MyTime" and "Autobiography No. 1". Selec-tions by the regular artists include "PutYour Hand in the Hand", "Days of TheLooking Glass", "Face in the Mirror","Same Damn Song" and "Street CornerPreacher". A medley of "The Call", "Pagesof Time", "As Hard As I Try", "What CanI Do" and "Snowbird" will also be featured.

Singalong Jubilee is produced at CBC Halifaxby Manny Pittson.

LOTS OF NEW PRODUCTFOR WEA RECORDSMike Reed, of WEA-Elektra is getting ex-cited these days about all the new productbeing released on his labels lately. One LPgetting heavy store promotion for the Christ-mas gift trade is "The Electric Company".This children's educational package wasproduced by The Children's TV Workshopand features several stars, including BillCosby. Another album just out that islong overdue is James Taylor's "OneMan Dog". Interest is building alreadyin this set, which features Taylor alongwith Carole King, John MacLaughlin,Linda Ronstadt, Kate Taylor and James'new wife, Carly Simon. Single culled fromthe LP is "Don't Let Me Be Lonely Tonight".

Adult contemporary programmers willlikely be interested in Joni Mitchell's newLP for its Canadian content. "For the Roses"is Joni's first Asylum album and includesher single "You Turn Me On, I'm A Radio"."Homecoming" by America and "NoSecrets" by Carly Simon are two other newalbums that will fit the adult contemporarygroove.

Other new product keeping WEA busy in-cludes LP's by The Grateful Dead, Mothersof Invention, Billie Holiday and Jimi Hendrix.

POWERHOUSE WRAPS UPCROSS -CANADA TOURThe high-powered contemporary musi-cians making up Powerhouse have com-pleted their cross -Canada tour and arenow back in Toronto. The ten -week tourtook in such varied dates as the Universityof P.E.I, and the Can -Am Race Pop Festi-val in Edmonton.

They also brought their unique brand ofheavy sound to a couple of Alberta Cam-puses, the Loyalist Days in Halifax, Sum-mer Garden in Port Dover and SunnysideBeach in Ema Lake, Sask.

Current project for the group is lining upmaterial for possible use on record.

NEW MEMBERS FORKITCHENER'S RAINKitchener rock group Rain has announceda couple of new members have joined thegroup. New lead guitarist and bassist areBernie Labarge and Brian LeBlanc, formerlyof Stem. Since joining the band this summer, bookings have continued to flow in, reflect-ting talent buyers' confidence in the newRain. On the recording side, Rain's pro-ducer, Greg Hambleton, admitted he hadfeared a setback when the change was made, but latest word from Greg says the twomembers are working in perfectly. Four newsongs will be recorded in December for theirnew single on Axe Records.

Rain management, Scorpio Music ofKitchener, are keeping Rain news beforethe industry eye with a "Rain Newsletter".Sheet features latest pictures and reviewsof the group.

Most important gig in a packed November/December schedule will be a week atToronto's Nickelodeon, December 11-16.

COLUMBIA PROMOTIONWORKING STEADILYColumbia Records' Charlie Camilleri has alot of good product to promote lately. Aftertheir November 8 call on 93 radio stations, the Atkinson, Danko & Ford single "RightOn" was added to a good selection of play -lists across the country and is continuingto spread. The single is also out in the U.S.

Follow-up calls will be made on all thestations to promote the AD&F album, outthis week. Release of the LP in the Statesis being held until January, to allow timefor the single to be exposed.

Rock group Riverson, is another Columbiaact getting early action. Two of the threemembers were with Mashmakan, and theRiverson sound has been getting publicitythrough a four -month Canadian tour withApril Wine. Riverson's single "A Clear Night"was released early in the Maritimes tocoincide with the tour there, and as it isreleased nationally, Columbia has manyEastern radio listings to help the record.

Marty Butler, one of the winners in the"Hear Canada Singing" competitionsponsored by Molson's, is getting Columbiaattention too. His single "Can You Hearthe Music" will be released prior to theDec. 5 airing of the Molson's TV special,in which Butler performs his winner.Additional push for the new song will comefrom a 5 -city tour planned to coincide withthe single release.

On the American side, great early responseto albums by West, Bruce and Lang, andLoggins and Messina is keeping Columbiahopping.

HOOPER/HOSIER DEPARTCOUNTRY PUBLICATIONJack Hosier, freelance writer and composer, along with country recording artist AlHooper, have advised RPM that they areno longer a part of the World of CountryMusic. The paper, with two editions al-ready distributed, is hoping to establish it-self as a monthly voice for country music.

Hosier, who put together the Novemberissue, has departed the Editor's chair, withHooper vacating the position of ad andproduction manager. Reason for the splitis reportedly "an internal financial situa-tion within the paper".

LES ZAISER MAKESRECORDING DEBUTThe first record by Thessalon, Ontarionative Les Zaiser has been released onQuality Records' Celebration label. Thesingle, coupling "The Girl I Love" and"Teddy bear", is in a gentle MOR vein.

Les started his musical career at the ageof thirteen when he received his firstguitar. He is realizing an ambition often years' standing with the release ofhis record.

"The Girl I Love" is four-part Cancon, while the flip side is two-part (artistand production).

Too much talent...or too soonLately I have been listening to Canadian -made records with great regularity, just tojudge their potential and to listen to thesound that is coming out of Canadianstudios. In this article, I am talking aboutthe majority of Canadian releases, but notall Canadian -made records.

COMMENTdiA watt grealis

More product is coming out on the market, and more than half of it is hit material. The sound is there, the arrangements arethere and the talent is there. For somereason Canadian productions are coming ofage, and I hope I'm not the only one whothinks so, because we could be on the vergeof a string of Canadian hits.

Whether A&R men are being more selective,or more money is being spent on productions,or the skill of the craft is improving, I don'tknow. One thing that is obvious is the fact

". . . the prophets of doom, the messengers of

mediocrity, will be overwhelmed by the new genera-tion of competent, creative, confident artisans andby all those of preceding generations who havealready demonstrated their freshness of mind, theirtalent and their capacity for inspired leadership."

that Canadian records have a great deal ofappeal and potential.

If the theories and the systems of the in-dustry are true, we sit on the threshold ofa major breakout of Canadian hits. Neverhas there been so much good product.

I would like to name just a dozen or twoof the current crop of records that showgreat potential (and perhaps add a sleeperor two) but in this column, I hesitate toreview records or hype them or even in-fluence anyone with my own personaltaste.

It is sufficient to say that these old earshave heard many many records that resemblehits. They should be getting attention andmany of them are (or are about to).

Just to add to a very good situation, thereis something else that seems to be develop-ing. The merchandising, promotion andpublicity of records is getting better. Todaythere is more material available aboutartists, more rapport with the artists andmanagers and a definite upswing withradio stations when it comes to listeningfor a hit sound.

Simply, the industry is coming of age.Perhaps we have gone through the growingpains of an emerging music nation andbecome "pros" in both the record and pro-gramming areas.

Talking to both record men and programmersregularly, there seems to be a newborn excite-ment that is spreading through the industry. The trade is looking for a hit.

SOUND OF MUSIC NEARTHIRTEEN MILLION SOLDAccording to a recent press releasefrom RCA's press department, the label'ssoundtrack album, "The Sound OfMusic", is maintaining its position asthe "largest selling album in the historyof the recording industry." As of June 30of this year, the date of RCA's latestaudit, sales figures for the album had reach-ed a remarkable six million in NorthAmerica. Total figures for the world aregiven as "approaching thirteen million"units.

Up until now, 1972 was a dismal year for Cana-dian hits. The last two months certainly lookencouraging. I sincerely hope that this yearwill not go down in history as being the mostunproductive year (for hits) in the historyof the new Canadian music era.

When the new year comes, we will all haveto look back and judge the artists and therecord companies. We will have a chance toreview the past year when the Juno Awardsballots are sent out. We will have to votefor the artists and the companies that haveput forth the greatest effort.

As you work over your ballot, the past yearwill flash by in your mind, and the artiststhat were most popular will get your votes. It may be a difficult task this year to findthe real stars who had hits. There reallyhasn't been an outstanding hit this year.Last year and the year before prosperedfar better on the Canadian and interna-tional charts.

As 1972 is about to end, it might be a goodtime to look around at what we have pro-duced. We should look at Canada's trackrecord in the first ten months.

There is still time to look at the industryand find a star or find a hit. Let's see ifCanada can get it together and start thenew year with a giant hit. There is stilltime to take a close look at the currentcrop of records.

COVER STORY

VALDY - DON'T CALLHIM A FOLKSINGERPeace, contentment and freedom are in-tangible goals set long ago because theywere and are necessary to human nature.Few of us can truthfully say that we haveachieved the forementioned. He feelspeace on his farm, while in constantcompany of ten others, freedom throughhis music and contentment when he's"one mortgage payment ahead of himself".Music is his vehicle of communication andhis expressions. The brisk yet unhurriedformat prompts a warm comfortable re-sponse of the senses. To say he is simplyappealing would be an understatement. When listening to Valdy it is not difficultto recognize his freedom and perhapsenvy it. If you are so inclined to do so.However, we all have varied interpre-tations of freedom.

"To me freedom is having a place tohang your hat as far as I'm concerned. Then if you've got a place to hang yourhat it doesn't matter where you go;you always have that place to comeback to. As long as I've got a home itdoesn't matter where I go or whathardships or goodships I go through.I've got a home."

The music of Valdy is very gentle andflowing with his own special feeling. Atthis time one might query; Is Valdyeffected by that which is going on aroundhim or is it very much the opposite?

"Well I figure I am part of what's goingon. It's pretty hard to grow apart fromit. Mostly I tend to drift with it. I'mnot going to push either way; I'm justdrifting and letting somebody else drive."

Escape -ism perhaps?

"No, if I was escapin' I'd be at home now.You can't escape. You can extract your-self from what's goin' on, but then youmiss it all. But if you flow with it youpick up on it and decide whether tobe effected or not."

RPM'S DEADLINEfor ad reservationsTUESDAY NOON

CANADIAN MUSIC SALESHITS BIG WITH BOWERWith Christmas just around the corner, and radio stations thinking about where

the Christmas music is, Canadian MusicSales is reaping early rewards. The recordthat's causing the excitement is a Dominionsingle by the Laurie Bower Singers,"Danielle", and "What Is Christmas". Somerecord companies release a lot of theirChristmas product in mid -to -late November, too late to gather concentrated airplay, butC.M.S. got working on promotion early. Asa result, five Toronto stations are on it(CKEY, CFRB, CKFH, CFTR and CKGM)as well as Ontario stations CHML, CHYRand CKOC. The record, cutting across allformats, is expected to be a staple at virtually.all stations through December.

There are current trends and fads whichthe majority follow. Trends vary fromclothing to speech to music. Strangelyand pleasantly enough Valdy is seeminglyunaffected by these current fads in music;a fact which is clearly evident in hisrefreshing verse or the well paced tunesplayed tactfully on a battered Martin.

"At 21 it wants to leave home.""I'm just living a different life for thatkind of thing. Now someone who comesfrom the country might look at me andsay 'Yeah, he's into all those things. He's carrying his own water into thehouse and chopping wood to keep him-self warm.' It all depends who's judgingme."

Doing things diligently and living a basicand simple life with family and friendsare happy things for Valdy who workswell on both music and the farm. He main-tains an amiable easy manner.

The strongest indication of Valdy's por-trayal of thought can be seen in the briefliner notes on his album, "Valdy - CountryMan". Within these notes a dash and glimpseof someone real can be seen.

"I'm influenced by the stars, the sunclimate and hunger, hunger for sure.Hunger of all different kinds. Theseasons too. Whatever is around. Hardto say. It all depends which work I'min. Each one is different, like a differentpainting. You can paint the same placea whole lot of ways."

So often we find ourselves categorizing

RPM 2112172 - 5

someone like Valdy who plays the acoustic,"soft" form of music as a folksinger. It is anold term perhaps, but one that we alwayssettle for. But by just talking to or watchingValdy perform, you quickly learn that hecannot be categorized as this or that.

"I'm not sure that I can think of myselfin terms of a bag or an adjective. (pause)Again it's hard. I'm a farmer and I liketo make music. That's about it."

When listening to Valdy it is apparent thathe is very wrapped up in himself and hissound without being egotistical. He givesthe impression that the uniqueness hepossesses is something that should beshared.

"Everybody's feelings are importantto everybody else or should be anyway.I like to get to be one with the audience,"

Valdy's music follows his lifestyle; basic, mellow and uncomplicated, for this is theway Valdy has chosen to live.

"I've got nothing to do with orderedsets of canyons which I refer to citiesas because there's nothing growin'there. Everything is covered up withpavement and the ground dies under-neath. You've got this whole trip goingon top of a carcass, because there'snothing growing inside. I can't relateto that."

For eight long years Valdy has been writing, playing and singing for his supper and"survival". He's been winning and losingbut appreciating whatever fortune comeshis way. -Pat Harbron

Billy McDanielsBilly McDaniels was five foot twoAnd he helped out his mom as a kidA wizard at school, he was rotten at poolAnd his gang never liked what he didHis glasses and nose were stuck in proseWhile the boys was out beating their chestsThey drove fast and they made the girlsBut Billy was doing his best

Billy grew up and became an accountantAnd he got an apartment downtownHe learned to embroider at a lonely hearts clubAnd the guys at his job put him downHe was rotten at bowling, he flinched when they

told himThat he wasn't much of a manSometimes he agreed, 'cause for too many yearsHis lover was only his hand

One night at the club, a girl showed upAnd Billy just thought she was tineShe was small in the chest, but big in the heartAnd he asked her to dinner at nineShe didn't care that he was shortThat he wouldn't kill dragons or menShe and Billy grew happy not swallowing that lineThat swallowed up most of their friends

Do men really have to stomp through the flowersDo women really have to dependJust who made the map of a man and a woman'slife

From beginning to endBoys don't cry and the girls keep 'em happyTil someday they flip their lidsMaybe Billy wasn't much of a heavy manBut I hope he has a lot of kids.

Young adult demographics, the primepeople to reach these days, are oftenhelped by airing of 1955-63 oldies. Theseold Rock and Roll hits have come intofavour because the sound, once consideredtoo hard, is not out of line with current"Adult Contemporary" singles like theStylistics, Keith Hampshire, and ThreeDog Night. MAHOGANY RUSHAT TURNING POINTMontreal progressive rock group MahoganyRush, whose Kot'ai album "Maxoom"moved up to 85 this week on the RPM100 albums, will get another boost towardstardom December 15. That's the day theywill share the bill with John Mayall, in amajor concert at the Montreal Forum. Theconcert is seen as a turning point forMahogany Rush, who now have Montreal'sNo. 1 album thanks to heavy airplay onCHOM-FM.

The Mayall-Mahogany Rush package willplay the Colisee de Quebec on December14. Previous concerts have already estab-lished the flamboyant group as a ratingsdraw in their own right, and the Mayallgig cannot help but spread the word alittle more.

Future promotion tactics for the bandwill concentrate on the parts of Canadaoutside Quebec. The main message isthat, in just 15 months, Mahogany Rushhave become genuine superstars in Montreal. With all the Montreal dailies using lavishpraise like "the best contemporary groupin Montreal", Mahogany Rush seemsheaded toward national success.

JThe Farmer's SongDusty old farmer out workin' your field .

Hangin' down over your tractor wheel,The sun beatin' down turned the red paint to orangeAnd rusty old patches of steel. There's no farmer songs on that car radio,Just cowboys, truck -drivers and painWell this is my way to say

"Thanks for the meal",And I hope there's no shortage of rain

Straw hat and old dirty hankiesMoppin' a face like a shoe. Thanks for the meal. Here's a song that is real

From a kid from the city to you.

Though the combines gang up, take most of the breadThings just aint' like they used to be;Though your kids are out after the American dream,And they're workin' in big factories; If I come by when you're out in the sunCan I wave at you just like a friend? These days when everyone's takin' so muchThere's somebody given back in.

LIDDELL & KJV OFFWITH GOSPEL ALBUMRob Liddell, a native of Galt and strongbeliever in the Gospel sound, joined forceswith the popular King James Version forhis first Gospel album, "We Travel Together"The set was released on the Word label, dis-tributed out of Vancouver.

The Liddell/KJV session was produced byArt Snider at his sound Canada Studios inToronto. The clever art work on the frontof the jacket is the creation of Kerry Wag -horn.

Liddell, with no formal musical training, isa self taught piano and organ stylist whichgained him an appointment as churchorganist in Galt. He moved on to radio anddirected his own program in London andthen broke into Little Theatre. It was in1967 (Canada's Expo year) that the city ofGalt paid tribute to Liddell with two of hiscompositions, "Blest Canada", and "OurMaple Leaf Shall Reign" being performed

a choir of 3000 school children.

The Liddell/KJV album is actually a follow-up to his single, "We Travel Together", whichhe dedicated to his father, and "My Mother'sEyes", a fitting tribute to his mother, whowas a constant source of faith and encourage-ment to him and who died in January of 1971

HONEY WEST INTROS"COLOURED TV" IN U.S.Marathon recording artist Honey West re-cently returned from Wheeling WestVirginia's "Jamboree U.S.A." where sheintroduced her latest single, "His ColouredTelevision", to the U.S. market.

The timely lyrics appeal to the many"sports widows" whose husbands arealways glued to the tube, and this appealcontinues to gain radio play for the discthroughout Canada.

With the Marathon promotion peopleworking steadily, Honey West seemsheaded towards her biggest hit to date.

Big Bad CityRain washes through the downtown.

People with their heads down walk around.

Taxicabs splash everyone they ignore.

The bars open wide and the night starts to roar

I think with my drink in my hand

As the steam rises up from my shoes.

There isn't anything that's all pretty

But it ain't that bad in the big bad city

Life gets abused, but life is forgiving

So it ain't that bad to go on living

Tenements, run down flats

The only wild things are the rats

Run down freaks and big Cadillacs

There isn't really any wrong side to the tracks

Sometimes I think there's something fine

About a run-down shoe.

LONDON continued from page 21

Last, but not least in London, is CKSL.Until January of this year, CKSL wasblock programmed with country and con-servative MOR, heavy on instrumentals.Since MD Pat Bestall joined the staff inJanuary this year, the station has been up-dated to a more modern "adult contem-porary" format, with an emphasis onpersonality announcers. Half of the musicis from new singles by artists like WayneNewton, Johnny Nash, Lobo, GilbertO'Sullivan, 5th Dimension and Jim Croce.LP cuts feature names such as Andy Williams,Tobias, Laurie Bower Singers, James Last,Bobby Vinton, Engelbert Humperdinck,Cher, the Carpenters, Murray McLauchlanand Neil Diamond. At night some of thesofter material is dropped, and on the allnight show, 1955-63 old rock and rolloldies are added to each hour. No otherstation plays records this old; most CFPLgold is less than five years old, for example.

CKSL thus seems to be appealing to aslightly older audience than CFPL, CJ BKand CHLO, although their sound is con-temporary enough to draw the 18-30bracket as well.

CFPL-FM hasremaineduntouched throughall this. Their format features CBC fare, and several classical programs; but the mainstaple is "wall-to-wall" music, with no 45's.

Instrumentals and plums are used fre-quently, along with the occasional cut froma new LP like Lightfoot, Neil Diamond orBread. Late at night, progressive rock isaired from 12-3 a.m. This segment is pro-grammed by Radio Western, and goes mid-night to 6 a.m. on the weekends. This free-form program provides CHLO with its onlycompetition throughout the broadcast dayin a progressive rock format. This maychange however, if Radio Western getsthe FM licence it has asked the CRTC for.

And what's it all in aid of, these program-ming reshuffles? The BBM is coming out,and the stations want good ratings, nottotal ratings (CFPL will likely win thatrace, thanks to news and information),but ratings that show a good percentageof 18-30, or 18-40 year olds are listening.

So all stations want a sound that is verycontemporary, for young adult appeal, but not too harsh, so it will appeal to"older young -adults" too. And so CJ BK,CFPL and CKSL all end up playing a lotof the same records. The difference liesin what type of music is put with the "hits"

CHLO, however, is radically different -sounding, and this will help them as theother three fight over the same audience.Already they seem to be drawing 16-25year old listeners who find the other sta-tions too soft sounding.

Whether or not CHLO's true strength willshow in the next BBM is a matter of dispute."Freaks don't fill out ballots," says ChuckAzzarello. And the format is so new that ithasn't had a chance to become fully es-tablished. CJ BK's tight "hit" sound seemsready to grab a wide young audience, butCFPL and CKSL are doing their best tohelp distribute the prime young adultlisteners evenly among all stations. CFPL's"establishment" audience will likely staywith the station, listening for informationand remaining unaffected by new musicformats. And CKSL is picking up newlisteners because of the addition of 50's -60's nostalgia to their mainstream of music.

In summary, it seems the London radiomarket is reflecting trends elsewhere onthe continent for stations to go for the"whole ball of wax". Instead of onestation trying for teens, one for youngadults, and one for an older audience, all (except CHLO) want young adults, plus any older or younger listeners theycan get. This is because national ad-vertisers for most products want astation that reaches the 18-35 agebracket, who are big spenders on con-sumer goods.

And so it seems that the trend towardbuying time demographically is whatis causing the excitement in radiomarkets like London, Ontario.

McGOVERN CHARGES U.S.TV FAVOURED NIXONThe Committee to Elect McGovern isplanning an extensive investigation intothe behaviour of American televisionstations with regard to political favour-itism. According to a recent report inVariety, the Committee will specificallyinvestigate the amount of money chargedfor time bought on behalf of McGovernas compared to time sold to non-politicalbuyers. A recent addition to the Americanstatutes specifies that stations must selltime to political candidates at their lowestrate. Apparently the McGovern people, pressed for time, were forced to over -payAmerican television stations some $200,000in order to secure air -time. The committeeexpects to recover the full amount over-charged, taking the matter to court ifnecessary.

An expert on media, working for con-gressional candidates, has indicated that

there may be more to it than greed forthe dollar: Nixon may have been accordeda better deal by the broadcasters "eitherout of preference, or fear." In the closingweeks of the campaign, numerous stationsrefused to carry a thirty -minute McGovernmessage, yet changed their tune quicklywhen Nixon walked in the door with asimilar half-hour spiel.

NBC's "Today Show" was also hauled onthe carpet for ignoring a law requiringbroadcasters to give equal time on acandidate -for -candidate basis. McGovernappeared on the show for thirty minutes, making the program liable for providingthirty minutes to Nixon. John Connally, the Democratic Party's Quisling, filled infor Nixon in contravention of the law.

According to Variety, this was a commontheme in the campaign. Correct interpre-tation of the equal time law requires theopposing candidate to appear in person. Ifhe is unwilling, for whatever reason, tomake the appearance, he must forfeit thetime. Although the McGovernites appliedconsiderable pressure to stations forequitable treatment, "there's no way theycould have been any match for pressurescoming from the White House."

PAIN AND ECSTASY GO TOGETHERLIKE JOCKS AND ANNOUNCERS!!!This is neither a reply nor a rebuttal, but rather a personal opinion concerningMr. Grealis' Crosstalk topic (RPM Nov.18th). My name is Donny Burns, I am adisc jockey. Please note I said disc jockeynot announcer. Announcers do stationbreaks, and make an extra few "Thou",telling bathrobed and curlered housewiveswhy they should use a more expensivedishwashing detergent. (I'm not bitter, justa little envious).

Walt says if you're entertaining thoughtsof getting into this illusion called radio, don't! I also say, don't! Don't listen toWalt! Everything he says about this ex-aggerated business, and its traumas anddisappointments is true, but don't let itdiscourage you.

I hope I'm speaking for the "veterans" inthis retort. I guess that's who it's for, theguys who've gone through the so-called"pain and suffering". I say so-called, notbecause it's not there, but because it's well,I guess, intangible.

Here's why you CAN make it! Myself, andanother young man spent night after night, week after week, at the same radio stationin Winnipeg, faking air checks, reading spots, and attempting to create clever intros tohit "fades". The other "hopeful's" namewas J. Robert Wood; if you don't knowthat name, you haven't done your home-work.

To insure this doesn't end up sounding likean autobiography, I'll abbreviate.

Mr. Grealis is absolutely correct when hestates that you start at the bottom! I beganon an all night show (7 hours long), playingrock from midnight to 5, C&W from 5 to7 AM. I read farm reports, gave "messages

to the North", and covered a murder trial.I hadn't the slightest idea what I was doing!(Someday I think I'll go back to CKDM andthank them for having a sense of humourand an insatiable supply of patience).

My next move was to CKPR, Port Arthur, where my salary went up by a whopping$25.00 a month! (I was now making OVER$250.00 a month). I spent 14 happy monthsin Thunder Bay, sent out air checks, andreceived two job offers, one from CJ ET,Smith Falls, the other, CHUM, Toronto. So, being an Argonaut fan

Disappointment! Sent to CHUM's "FarmTeam", CJCH, Halifax! (They said I wasn'tready yet), it took me two years to figureout they were right.

Then, La Belle Province! CKGM, Montreal!Up against George Balcaen! Scary! I did themorning show there for almost two years. Why did I go from Montreal to Calgary? For you, the aspiring "JOCK", it wouldmake no difference or even less sense. Noneof us, who have struggled either up, down,or laterally, could give a feasible explanation;at least not to you, not you, who's willingto damn the torpedoes, or lead "The 600".

I am now at CKXL, where I'm doing a littlebetter than the $206.00 per month (clear),that was my first payment for shooting offmy mouth. (I have the receipt in my scrap-book). I may be here six months or sixyears (check tribal drum if you're interested).

I remember 1964, when everyone in the"biz" laughed at a little ten cent rag thatadvertised themselves on the litter cansbelonging to the City of Toronto. It nowcosts fifty cents and the industry, includingmyself, have quit laughing.

Walter, you are a hypocrite! If they havehalf your guts, they CAN make it!

So Mr. "radio man to be" my point is, ifyou really want it, it's there!

When a housewife no longer impresses youwhen she asks for your autograph for her"daughter". When you can laugh at thestories accusing you of being a "fag" or a

Charlie Russell, country jock from CJCJ Woodstock, NewBrunswick, into Toronto for Jerry Reed show.

"diddler". When you stop looking for razorblades everytime a "radio doctor", or con-sultant, calls you inconsistent. When a P.D.thinks you may have "the hots" for hiswife. When a columnist calls you "a plasticvegetable", or, when the General Managerstarts complaining about your demographicsand your quarter hour averages, you're thereman, you've made it!

I hope I'm speaking for most of us who'vebeen in it for awhile. If you're still doing"swing shift", like Walt says, "Keep truckin' ".If you're about to get your feet wet, "Reachfor the sky"!

We've had pain and ecstasy! Sorrow andelation! I wouldn't change any of it.

their product to appeal to target audiencesinstead of listeners in general. Patterns inprogramming that have stood untested foryears are being re-evaluated.

All of these trends in modern radio are beingreflected in London, a Western Ontario cityof 220,000 with five radio stations. Recentshakeups in programming philosophy haveleft only one station, CFPL-FM, relativelyuntouched.

The most unusual format in the area isheard on CHLO, generally accepted as aLondon station although it is licenced toSt. Thomas, ten miles to the south. CHLOconsiders itself a radio pioneer, ever sinceit dropped a local hodgepodge format in1966 and introduced format Top 40 toLondon. And, as PD Chuck Azzarellosays: "CHLO is continuing to lead theway with the new ideas. Our new formatis unduplicated anywhere else in CanadianAM radio."

Until 1970, CHLO remained virtuallyunchallenged in its rock format. Its troublesbegan when CJOE, which was at that timerunning last in the ratings, switched to heavy

ELVIS DOCUMENTARYNOW AVAILABLEA three-hour documentary "The ElvisPresley Special - Documentary of theKing" is now available free to CAB mem-bers. This unique program was voiced byGil Harris of CFTR and Paul Godfrey ofCHAM, with production by Trevor Sander-son, CHAM. Interest in Presley still runshigh after 17 years on the scene, and theshow is considered an image -builder forstations that use it.

To obtain the program, write Jerry Acton,Canadian Association of Broadcasters,12 Richmond St. E., Suite 347, Toronto 210.Stations are advised to book early if theywant to use the documentary for Elvis'birthday January 8th.

rock programming at night. Within a fewmonths, CJOE began to eat into CHLO's teenaudience. The race began in earnest whenCJOE went rock in all time periods, com-pleting head -to -head with CHLO. At first,CJOE relied heavily on "underground"album cuts. CHLO responded by mixing ina few LP cuts of its own with the singles.CJOE fought back by playing more hitsingles along with LP's. Both stationswere trying to broaden their appeal, to getsome of the audience of the other, and theresult was that by Summer '72, bothstations were sounding pretty similar, witha mixture of Top 30 singles with progressivealbum cuts. Owner Joe McManus changedCJOE call letters to CJBK and then sold thestation to Rick Richardson. Jerry Stevens, former CHLO MD, was named new PD atCJBK.

By this time, CHLO had apparently decidedit didn't want to share its audience withCJBK, and went all the way with albumcuts. CJBK immediately dumped its LP'sto concentrate on the hit singles.

The CHLO playlist consists of about 15primary LP's, 6 or 7 secondary LP's andapproximately 10 Canadian LP's. Thestation selects 2 to 4 cuts from each forairplay. 45 -wise, there are 12 to 15 primarysingles, 10 secondary singles and 10 Cana-dian. So in approximate terms, 90 songsare being played from albums and about30 from singles. As Chuck Azzarello says:"We have artist repetition, but not songrepetition." Album artists receiving themost exposure are Chicago, Elton John,Three Dog Night, Rod Stewart, The Band,Van Morrison, Leon Russell, Emerson, Lakeand Palmer, Seals & Croft, Cat Stevens,T. Rex, Gord Lightfoot, Black Sabbath, the Doobie Brothers and Carole King. Allmusic is aired in groups of two or threesongs, with a relaxed -on -air presentation, and no jingles or hard sell promos. Singleand album gold is used sparingly. Azzarellosays the station is after the 16-25 agebracket, and if you had to put a label onthe sound, "just call it contemporary".

In the London market, it is obvious thatthe old labels do not apply any more, forall four CHLO, CJBK, CKSL and CFPLused the word "contemporary" to describethemselves. CJBK has a tight, fast -paced"hit" sound that emphasizes music fromthe "All Hit 29". (This list and the topof the RPM 100 usually match prettyclosely). The hits are augmented withabout 15 extras and the balance is gold

(about 1 record in 3). Jingles aren't used, but fast -paced production station ID's anda $1000 Money House contest add excite-ment. But CJBK is not just a teen station"Our audience is everyone under 40", saysmanagement. And the softer sound ofsingles lately makes their music acceptableto this wider audience.

Meanwhile, the local newspaper (TheLondon Free Press) operates a sidelinebroadcast empire that includes, CFPLAM/FM/TV. CFPL-AM carries CBCradio features, a heavy slate of news andinformation, plus talk shows from 7-11a.m. and 6:30 - 8 p.m. CFPL has tradition-ally been first in total ratings because ofits information coverage. But music isvery important too. MD Bill Murray des-cribes CFPL as an "adult contemporarystation". Using a list of 40 "hit singles",the average 14 -tune hour is composed of7 hits, 5 gold singles, and 2 Canadian plumsfrom LP's. Current singles on the playlistinclude "Stoned in Love With You","Summer Breeze", "It Never Rains inSouthern California" plus some softermaterial like Sam Neely and the "Rowdy -man Theme". Gold singles are often the5th Dimension or Tom Jones. Some of thecurrent Canadian songs listed tend moretoward rock, like Lighthouse's "SunnyDays" and Abraham's Children with"Goodbye Farewell". Murray's biggestproblem is finding Cancon that isn't toorock. Since CJBK dropped its album cutsand went to its present format, CFPL hasbecorne just a touch more conservative saysMurray. But the overall sound is still verybright compared to some "adult" stationsin other markets.

RCA'S REED INTOHOOK & LADDERJerry Reed received the RCA welcomingmat, headed up by its Vice -Presidentand General Manager, Bob Cook (note toRocco: Isn't it about time the title wasshortened to President RCA Records CanadaLtd?), and National Promotion Manager,Ed Preston. Reed, who wears gloves. betweensets, to protect his nails "I've lost ninetypounds of pickin' nails over the years",missed out on the Jack Morrison handshake, making it possible for him to go on for asecond show. Morrison, Ontario BranchManager for RCA, is a big booster of thecountry sound.

Although in between hits, Reed was "righton", particularly with his past biggie,"When You're Hot You're Hot", and others. He appeared a little uncomfortable duringhis first set - after all, the Hook and LadderClub isn't a cow palace and its clientelle areused to the heavy and straight pop baritonetypes. But Reed was able to bridge thatgap, if there is such a thing, and countryfieda whole medley of Beatle hits including"Lady Madonna", "Michelle" etc, endingup just as much out of breath as was hisaudience. His big audience grabber was"You'll Never Walk Alone" from the Rogersand Hammerstein musical, "Carousel".Even Bob Cooke hooked into this one, agreeing with several observers that Reedshould cut it as a single.

This was Reed's first public engagement in"To -Ron -To Can -A -Da" and RCA's nationalcountry promotion manager, Barry Haugen,

NATIONAL CAMPUS DUTIESTO RCA'S "CUTIE" MURPHYJohn Murphy, one of the promotion leadersin the field of campus radio, has been ap-pointed to the post of National CampusPromotion Manager.

Ed Preston, National Promotion Manager,in making the announcement, noted that"RCA's commitment to campus radio hasbeen an extremely rewarding experience, and that the enthusiasm, honesty and in-terest shown by the students, AM and FMprogrammers, RPM Music Weekly, and ourown artists in our regional seminars, hasencouraged us to get on with it - nationally."

Murphy's devotion and desire in the im-proving of campus communication, hascreated a new importance for this relativelyignored vehicle for the sale of records andimproved interest by those campus pro-grammers wishing to follow a career in thebroadcast field. Campus programmers, from coast to coast in Canada, are invitedto forward all material and enquires toMurphy at 101 Duncan Mill Rd. Don Mills,Ontario. Says Preston: "He may dazzleyou with dynamite."

Thegroup has been booked for a return engage-ment at every one of the thirty-five venues, according to manager, Craig Nicholson. Thegroup is now slowing down for some relaxedtouring in their own backyard, southernOntario, prior to hitting the road againafter Christmas for "Jason Junket 3", whichwill see them tour the southern UnitedStates.

Recording plans are now being finalized byproducer Dennis Murphy, on behalf ofSundog Productions. Announcement oflabel affiliation is expected in the near fu-ture. The group has also added more staff, taking on a promotional secretary, MarshaNicholson. Miss Nicholson will be respon-sible for media contact, information andpublicity.

LONDON "SUPER HYPE"FOR MOULDY OLD DOUGHSummerlea Music, publishers of "MouldyOld Dough", and London Records, whodistribute it, have launched a major pushon the Lt. Pigeon single. After climbing tonumber one in England, the outlandishsound is catching the ears of music direc-tors across Canada. Reaction has beenexceptional in markets airing the deck, and a "Super Hype" promo package isjust out to re -acquaint all stations withthe happy left field song.

"Mouldy Old Dough's" radio play hasearned the single a No. 98 on the RPM100, first week on.

AFTRA GETTING UPTIGHTOVER TALENT BLOCKADEThe American Federation of Television &Radio Artists has established an "unfaircompetition committee" to investigatethe problems facing American performers.AFTRA and several other performingunions feel that American artists are subjectto unfair restrictions on performing inEngland and Canada, while nationals ofother countries can perform in the UnitedStates.

The feelings of the unions seem to parallelthose expressed over the last few years byCanadian performers, who have traditionallyhad a tough time getting work permits in theStates. The Canadians complained that itwas much easier for Americans to enterCanada than for Canadians to enter theU.S.

Talent is an international thing, but fewcountries recognize this. Perhaps whenthey do, reciprocal arrangements will beworked out. Until then, border bickeringand protectionist tactics will continue. Bigstars have little trouble crossing the borders, but lesser names tell a different story.Artists can be subjected to mysteriousdelays, or even permit cancellations, whichcan be very costly and detrimental to theircareers.
