ICT: Growing Environmental Footprint
Servers, including cooling (23%)
Fixed-Line Telecoms
(15%)
Mobile Telecoms (9%)
LAN and Office Telecoms (7%)
Printers (6%)
PCs and Monitors (39%) (excluding embodied energy)
In 2007, Data centres produced almost as much
GHG as Malaysia – McKinsey

US DC power consumption has doubled in the last 5 years and will double
again in the next 5 – US EPA
Just a single Google data centre situated in Oregon, US, consumes energy equivalent to that of the entire city of Geneva, in Switzerland
- ITU Director Malcolm Johnson
The ICT sector currently contributes 2-3% to global emissions but this is set to
double in the next two years - ITU Director Johnson
Power makes up >50% of the cost of running a DC

Although ICTs account for only around 2.5 per cent of total greenhouse gas emissions, they have the potential to be used in reducing the other 97.5 per cent of emissions in other sectors.
ITU and Climate Change - ITU
Specific ICT opportunities identified in this report can lead to emission reductions five times the size of the sector’s own footprint, up to 7.8 GtCO2e, or 15% of total BAU emissions by 2020.

Major Strategy Thrusts Standards Development: Conduct DC energy benchmarking study and work with industry to
develop Green DC standards
Government taking the lead: Implement metering, conduct energy audits and adopt “green” criteria in
servers/DC procurement once available
Capability Development: Institute training and certification programs to enable the local ICT
industry to tap into the growing Green DC consulting market
Communications Programme: Tailor existing government incentives to be more directly applicable
to DCs and develop an integrated whole-of-govt Green DC message
R&D: Work with industry and government agencies to align R&D efforts in Green DC

Green Data Centre Innovation Programme An Integrated Approach
1.
Attract companies to set up at
least 5 R&D labs in Green DC
in Singapore
2.
Provide isolated and safe
environment for companies
to prove and develop new
energy efficient solutions
(Grand Challenge Target: 1.3 PUE)
3.
Drive existing data centre operators
and solution providers to achieve a
minimum energy efficiency
improvement of 20%, and develop
innovative strategies to minimize
transition time
