"We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence,
therefore, is not an act, but a habit." -
-- Aristotle
Rhythmic gymnastics is truly the hardest
sport. To be a rhythmic gymnast you must
throw, catch, and leap with precise
accuracy like Michael Jordan. You must be
as strong as Popeye and as flexible as
Gumby. Rhythmic gymnasts have the heart
of a dancer and the strength and courage of
a marathon runner. To be a rhythmic
gymnast, you must be a true all -around

Lim Heem Wei made history when
she became the first ever Singaporean
gymnast to achieve this feat.
High Performance
Fy2011 saw Singapore Gymnastics (SG) achieve results in all the three disciplines that we currently conduct high performance training programmes. In MAG, Terry Tay made history by bringing home our first medal in the Commonwealth Youth Games for Vault. We were represented in this competition at Isle of Man by two other juniors, Aizat Jufrie and Timothy Tay. SEA Games 2011 in Palembang, Indonesia saw Singapore retain our 3rd Consecutive Gold medal in Women’s team event through Lim Heem Wei, Krystal Khoo, Nabila Jufrie, Joey Tam, Foo Enning and Rachel Giam. Heem Wei further obtained a Silver medal on Floor Exercise and added a Bronze to her collection from the Individual All- around event. Singapore also obtained our first silver medal in Men’s Artistic through Gabriel Gan on the Pommel Horse event. In Rhythmic Gymnastics, Singapore was represented for the very first time by Phaan Yilin and Ann Sim, the former narrowly missing on bringing back the bronze. Lim Heem Wei qualified for the London test event with a great performance at the World Championships in Tokyo 2011. She did well enough at the event to earn one out of 98 available spots to compete at the Olympics. Our Juniors also had the opportunity to compete, with the MAG and WAG juniors competing at the ART Asian Junior Championships in Thailand, returning with commendable results. The RG juniors, on the other hand, had the opportunity to travel to Jiangsu for a training exchange with their counterparts.
Capability & Infrastructure
One of the more major areas of development in this area in fy2011 was in the development of our National Coaches’ Accreditation Programme (NCAP) programme. We have started to look seriously into the area of coaching development and continuous education. The programme will continue to be developed and improved upon, whilst benefiting and development both current and new coaches in the various disciplines. In the area of judges’ development, SG continued to send our international judges out for competitions in order to get them the necessary experience to upgrade their qualifications once the new code of points is introduced after the 2012 Olympics.
10
One of the newer areas that SG has been looking into is increasing participation and developing the notion of gymnastics as a foundation sport. We have been working on developing programmes for pre-school children and promoting gymnastics as fundamental movement skills development that form the basis for future development in any sports. For the first time, SG also sent in a contingent size of 68 students, parents and teachers to participate in the world Gymnaestrada in Lausanne. It was an unforgettable experience for those involved and we look forward to participating in such events in future.
NSA Management
SG welcomed Ms. Tan Chia Lee – Part Time Financial Executive in October 2011 and Ms.
Sara Obaldi – Marketing and Sales Executive in March 2012.
We are fortunate to have a team of committed, dedicated and talented staff who continue to provide better services for the gymnastics fraternity including our members and athletes. SG is excited about the future and look forward to embracing the opportunities and challenges in fy2012.
Events and dialogues
SG organized a bumper crop of events and dialogues in fy2011. We successfully organized
2 dialogue sessions with very encouraging numbers and covered a variety of topics.
Feedback received from these sessions will allow us to improve them in order to engage the
fraternity and members more effectively.
SG continued to organize our 2 yearly competitions, the Singapore Open in June and the
National Championships in September, as well as our annual Gymfest in 2011. Taking into
account feedback and requests from the fraternity, we organized another National
Championships in February and March 2012, in order to encourage more participation.
In addition, SG assisted PESEB in the organization of the ASEAN Schools and National
Schools competitions, organized an AGU coaching camp for Rhythmic Gymnastics and sent
our coaches and officials for numerous AGU courses overseas.

Fundraising and Marketing Report
Naveen Bhat, 1st Vice President
As SG grows our programmes, more funds are needed to support these plans in order for us to achieve the objectives of the organization. Fundraising had not been an area that SG focused on, but moving forward will take a very important role in the organization. Since taking over the fundraising portfolio in the new management committee of Singapore Gymnastics from July 2011 onwards, steps have been taken to kickstart the fundraising and marketing area that has been lacking in SG. We have now engaged a full-time marketing and sales staff to look into this area, who will be engaging individuals and corporates to come forward to support SG’s programmes and events. We believe that with increased sponsors and donors coming on board, SG will be able to fund more programmes to benefit the gymnastics fraternity.

Membership Report
Gregory Rutledge, 2nd Vice president
Membership numbers have increased gradually in 2011 and 2012. Although Associate Membership is only seeing a slow increase, SG is keen to engage more gymnastics related businesses and organisations in the coming year. Athlete membership and Individual membership are also at their highest since SG started in 2003 and we are committed to increase it even more in the coming years, especially with plans to increase the number of accredited coaches, judges and officials in Singapore. However, one important point to note is that Full Membership has remained constant over the last few years. SG must and will, engage and encourage, more organizations registered with the Registry of Society to become full members of SG or assist special groups to start their own society. Gan Chai San, 3rd Vice President
SG remains affiliated with the Fédération Internationale de Gymnastique, Asian Gymnastics Union, Pacific Alliance of National Gymnastics Federations, South East Asian Gymnastics Confederation (SEAGCON) and the Singapore National Olympic Council. In fy2011, Singapore Gymnastics was host to members from SEAGCON in June for the SEAGCON Extraordinary General Meeting held from 17-18 June. The meeting was to discuss on the transition of SEAGCON to a new entity under the auspices of AGU. Delegates reviewed the new Statutes and were to confirm their acceptance by the time of the General Assembly in Palembang. With the new Management Committee on board and new representatives at the meeting, SG was unable to vote on adopting the new statutes of proposed new entity – SEAGZONE. The elections were postponed pending a working committee to conduct an in-depth review of the statutes. President Philip Chan chaired the workgroup and SG hosted the delegates in Singapore in December 2011. The working committee finalized the proposed amendments to SEAGCON in January 2012. Further discussions will be required to confirm Singapore’s affiliation to SEAGZONE. Under the affiliation to AGU, SG has been accorded the opportunity to organize events in Singapore as well as send representatives overseas to other Asian countries to attend courses and camps. Fy2012 will be the election year of the FIG, with the FIG Congress held in Mexico in October 2012. The AGU congress will be held in September 2012.

Industry Report
Keong Sin Gen, Committee Member (Industry)
SG managed to do well in the Industry segment in fy2011. We have managed to make our events more sustainable and also investing to improve the organization of the competition in the long term. In terms of participation numbers at the events, we have also seen a gradual increase over the years in both our annual competitions. We have also brought forward our National Championships from September to March, thereby organizing an additional competition for fy2011. Participation Numbers

Women’s Artistic Gymnastics Report
Gan Chai San, Head – Women’s Artistic Gymnastics
Singapore Gymnastics is so proud of Heem Wei’s
accomplishments and will continue to strive
for excellence in Women’s Artistic Gymnastics.
The major target for fy2011 was the 26th SEA Games held in Palembang, Indonesia. Our
WAG team had been champions for the last two SEA Games and we were looking forward
to retaining our title this year. With the exception of veterans Lim Heem Wei and Nabilah
Jufrie, who has both been part of our Gold medal winning team since 2005, Joey Tam,
Krystal Khoo and new seniors Foo Enning and Rachel Giam were all first timers at the
competition. Their performance at the competition brought home our Team Gold for the 3rd
consecutive time and Heem Wei brought home another Silver and Bronze medal for Floor
Exercise and Individual All-Around respectively.
18
Heem Wei’s qualification to the Olympics started from her participation at the World
Championships held in Tokyo in 2011, which served as the first qualification competition for
Individuals to participate at the Olympics. She gave a sterling performance which qualified
her for the second qualification – the London Test Event in January 2012. She made history
by becoming the first gymnast from Singapore to qualify for the most important event in the
sporting world. In preparation for the Olympics, Heem Wei and Joey also participated in the
ART World Cup held in Doha, Qatar. Joey performed well on the Balance Beam to finish 10th
in a pool of Olympic-bound gymnasts.
With regard to our Junior gymnasts, SG sent developmental
gymnasts from our High Performance training programme to
participate in the Queensland State Championships. These
gymnasts obtained precious competition experience and had
a chance to compete with other gymnasts in the same age
bracket. Following that, SG also sent a Junior team
comprising, Nicolette Lim, Michelle Teo, Zeng Qiyan, Kelsie
Muir and Ashly lau to compete at the ART Asian Junior
Championships in Thailand in March, coming in a
commendable 5th for the Team Event. Michelle Teo further
came in 5th in the Individual All-Around Competition, in a field
with competitors from Asian gymnastics powerhouses Japan
and Korea.
SG sent two coaches from our high performance training
programme, Mr. Guo Xinmin and Mdm Li Yaochun, as well
as Ms Rachel Kennett from Prime Gymnastics and Jon
Gutierrez from GIM Sports to attend an AGU organized
coaching camp in Amman, Jordan. Judges, Ms Tan Yuen
Yuen and Ms. Yang Xiaoyun also attended an AGU
organized judges’ preparatory course at the same venue.
This year, SG had also put in a request to participate in the
7th Sheikh Fahad Hiroshima-Asia Youth Sports Exchange
Project and had been approved to participate in the
programme in December 2012. This will be a good
opportunity for them to engage in joint practice sessions,
friendly competition, attend lectures and share different
cultural practices.

Men’s Artistic Gymnastics Report
Sng Puay Liang, Head – Men’s Artistic Gymnastics
Terry Tay and Gabriel Gan made history at the
Commonwealth Youth Games with a Bronze
In Vault and at the SEA games with a Silver
in Pommel Horse respectively.
Fy2011 saw many firsts
for Men’s Artistic
Gymnastics. We sent 3
MAG gymnasts, Terry
Tay, Timothy Tay and
Aizat Jufrie to the
Commonwealth Youth
Games (CYG) held in
September 2011 at the
Isle of Man. He made
history, returning with
Singapore’s first
gymnastics medal at the
CYG.
The MAG gymnasts also
participated for the first
time in the World
University Games held in
Shenzhen, China. We
were represented by
Gabriel Gan, Hoe Wah
Toon, Seah Kang Wei
and Will Tan.
20
SEA Games 2011 in Palembang, Indonesia proved to be our biggest target for the year and
SG sent a team comprising Gabriel Gan, Gregory Gan, Hoe Wah Toon, Terry Tay and
Timothy Tay. Gabriel Gan managed to secure a spot on the winners’ podium by clinching a
silver for Pommel Horse.
In terms of coaching staff, we managed to successfully engage the services of Coach Zhang
Yu in April and Coach He Tao in July. Coach Lin continues his good work with SG. We now
have 3 teams and expect to be able to select more gymnasts in future.
21
Rhythmic Gymnastics Report
Lim Siew Kuan & Choy Kah Kin – Co-Heads, Rhythmic Gymnastics
We participated for the first time in the SEA
Games and in a FIG World Cup in 2011. Numbers
participating in Rhythmic Gymnastics
continue to be so encouraging over the years.
Singapore’s young RG gymnasts participated in their first ever SEA Games, switching successfully from the Group event, which they competed in at YOG, to the Individual event. Phaan Yilin and Ann Sim put up a great performance in Palembang and narrowly missed out on the Bronze. Their performances were well commended by many in other SEA nations. Both Ann and Yilin also participated in the very first FIG World Cup in Portimao, Portugal, experiencing the competition at an international level and competing with World champions and traditional strongholds of Rhythmic Gymnastics.
22
Our developmental gymnasts also had the opportunity to participate in the Queensland State Championships in June 2011 as well as participate in a training exchange with the Jiangsu Provincial team in March 2012. The gymnasts obtained valuable learning from both trips.
In 2011, our gymnasts also participated at the Opening Ceremony of the Netball World Championships and Pasir Ris SRC and Tanjong Pagar GRC’s Lunar New Year Celebration. We also started a Satellitte Training centre in collaboration with Tiong Bahru Community Centre.
The current National Programme for RG is still under revision and slated to go through a further review when the new Code of Points is introduced after the Olympic Games in 2012. In August 2012, SG also organized the AGU RG Common Coaching Camp in Singapore conducted by Ms Maria Nikolaeva, PhD, Rhythmic Gymnastics Coach of the Russian Federation. We had 5 participating countries including Singapore and a total of 26 participants who benefitted from the course. Participation in RG continues to grow at a very encouraging rate, as can be seen from an almost 100% increase in competitors at our National Championships in 2012 from the competition we held in 2011. However, an important issue we had to deal with was the lack of facilities dedicated to RG. This continues to pose a big problem to the development of elite rhythmic gymnastics in Singapore as plans to train for the group event for YOG in 2014 had to be shelved due to insufficient training space. We are now working closely with SSC and PESEB to identify and obtain suitable venues for conducting rhythmic gymnastics training and hope that we can successfully resolve these issues soon.

Gymnastics For All Report
Goh Hwee Cheng – Head, Gymnastics For All
Our participation in the World Gymnaestrada in 2011
was so enriching and exciting, truly allowing us to
experience the magic of Gymnastics for All.
Fy2011 proved to be an important year for Gymnastics for All (GFA). It saw Singapore’s first ever participation at the World Gymnaestrada (WG) held in Lausanne, Switzerland in July 2011, introducing Singapore as a young GFA nation to the world.
The winners of the “Most Creative” award at Gymfest 2010 - Nanyang Primary, were sent to the event. A total of 34 students, 5 teachers and principal of Nanyang Primary took the opportunity to participate in this event. The final count was a contingent of 68 people, including an official from SG and 22 parent- helpers.
On the local front, SG also held our annual Gymnastics Festival (Gymfest) for the 5th time in 2011 at Toa Payoh Sports Hall. Our Guest of Honour for the event was Mdm Tan Bee Lian, Deputy Director, Participation Development from the Singapore Sports Council.
24
Participation increased from 2010, with a total of 250 people participating, up from the 150 in 2010. This year, we also had a total of 92 overseas participants, 22 from Korea and 70 from Sri Lanka.
Spectatorship was also boosted with an approximate figure of 700- 1000, and more efforts will be put in to increase the number in future years. Looking ahead, SG will propose to host the 4th Asian Gymnaestrada in Singapore in 2013 and look forward to engaging the various stakeholders in the gymnastics fraternity to come together to make the event successful. We are excited about GFA’s development in future years and look forward to actively engage children of all ages, young adults and seniors to join us in celebrating and embracing GFA.
