On behalf of the IFEAT Singapore Conference Committee, I am delighted to welcome all the delegates and theiraccompanying persons to the annual IFEAT Conference to be held from Sunday November 4th to ThursdayNovember 8th in Asia’s financial hub – the tropical city of Singapore made up of 63 islands.

Located in the heart of South East Asia, the conference will allow participants to experience many diversifiedcultures, entertainment and business opportunities the region has to offer. The strong growth in Asia, which isbeing led by Singapore, exemplifies the year’s conference theme ‘Essential Asia’.

The IFEAT Conference will be held at the magnificent hotel Marina Bay Sands, Singapore which overlooks on oneside: Malaysia by the Straits of Johor to the North and Indonesia’s Riau Islands by the Singapore Strait to the South.The hotel is an arc of excellence and in reality provides an experience of shock and awe. This year IFEAT has partnered with a dynamic creative agency ‘Imagination Singapore PTE Limited’ as the OfficialTravel Agent of IFEAT 2012 to look after travel and tour needs. Delegate Registration Cancellation PolicyCancellations received by the Secretariat in writingbefore 1st September 2012 will be eligible for a 50%refund. No refunds will be given for cancellationsreceived after this date, irrespective of the reason,including inability to obtain a visa to visit Singapore. Itis the responsibility of delegates and theiraccompanying persons to obtain valid visas forSingapore. Please refer to the visa section of theGeneral Information on page 14 for further informationon visa requirements.

Delegates are reminded to register for the conferenceearly and allow plenty of time when applying for visasas the application process can be slow. Delegatesapplying for visas do so at their own risk. IFEAT will notbe responsible for unsuccessful applications. Visainvitation letters can be obtained through the IFEATSecretariat. The closing date for registration and visainvitation requests is 5th October 2012.

It is recommended that insurance be taken to cover therisk of being unable to attend due to sickness, familybereavement or for any other reason.

Travel insurance may facilitate some refund oftravel expenses and registration fees to be obtainedthrough insurers in the event of inability to travel due to illhealth or other circumstances, including those describedin the clause above. It is very important that you read thesmall print of any insurance policy that you are consideringto ensure that the cover that is required is the cover that isbeing offered. IFEAT can take no responsibility in the eventof an inadequate policy having been purchased or of therefusal or the inability of the insurer to pay the claim. PASSPORTSPassport valid for at least six months from the date ofentry required by all.

VISA REQUIREMENTSVisas are not required for Commonwealth citizens, Britishpassport holders, and Republic of Ireland citizens for astay of up to 14 days. For other nationalities, it is best toconsult your local consular office for the latest informationwith regards to coming into Singapore. If you are planninga visit to Malaysia and/or Indonesia, please also contactyour local consular office.

HEALTH ADVICENo specific vaccinations are required to visit Singapore.However, it’s best to make sure you are up to date withyour basic inoculations such as tetanus and hepatitis.

DRESS CODESmart casual attire is appropriate for events during theconference with the exception of the closing banquetwhere business attire is requested.

LANGUAGEThe four official languages in Singapore are English,Chinese, Malay and Tamil. The national language of thecountry is Bahasa Melayu, or the Malay Language. Englishis widely spoken throughout Singapore.

CURRENCYThe currency used in Singapore is the Singapore dollar(SGD$). Automated teller machines (ATMs) are locatedeverywhere in Singapore, and accept most of the maincredit cards such as Visa, MasterCard and AmericanExpress. Notes come in denominations of SGD $2, SGD $5,SGD $10, SGD $20, SGD $50, SGD $100, SGD$500, SGD $1,000 and SGD $10,000. Coins come indenominations of 1, 5, 10, 20 and 50 cents and SGD 1.

GRATUITIES (TIPPING)Tipping is not a way of life in Singapore. It is prohibited atthe airport and discouraged at hotels and restaurantswhere a 10% service charge is included in the bill. A tipshould only be exercised when the bill does not include aservice charge.

ELECTRICITYSingapore voltage is 220-240 volts AC, 50 cycles persecond. On request, most hotels will provide transformers.When shopping for electrical appliances, remember tocheck the voltage of the item against the acceptablevoltage in your home country. The power plugs used inSingapore are of the three-pin, square-shaped type.

TIME ZONEThe time zone in Singapore is GMT plus eight hours.

CELL PHONE USAGESingapore’s international dialing code is +(65). While inSingapore and if you have international roaming service onyour cell phone, you don’t have to press +(65) as it willautomatically connect you to the local numbers.

CLIMATE AND WEATHERSingapore is known for its hot and humid weather, withlittle variation throughout the year. The average daytimetemperature is 31ºC (88ºF), dropping to around 24ºC(75ºF) in the evenings. The monsoon season can beardown pretty heavily on the tropical weather fromNovember onwards, so be prepared for rain on a dailybasis during this period.

SECURITYSingapore does not present any particular dangers tosecurity and is a popular international conference centre.However as in most major cities of the world, cautionmight be advised when travelling around the city at night.
