In 2019, moviegoers flocked to big-budget tent-pole movies, as they do every year. But one of those was unlike its blockbuster peers. Joker, which is based on the comic-book supervillain, attracted both awards buzz and

considerable controversy, and was one of the most talked-about films of 2019. Many fans and critics alike considered it a game-changer in the crowded comic-book movie field.

Director Todd Phillips, who co-wrote the movie with Scott Silver, took a radical approach to the source material. Instead of creating a franchise film, he has fashioned Joker as a standalone film set in 1981. It’s kept separate from the DC Extended Universe, which includes movies such as Man Of Steel, Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice, Suicide Squad, and Wonder Woman.

Joker follows Arthur Fleck (Joaquin Phoenix), a professional clown who would later become the eponymous character. Arthur struggles with mental illness and is the sole caregiver for his elderly mother (Frances Conroy). There’s not much going for him, with the exception of him making the

acquaintance of a kind neighbour (Zazie Beetz), on whom he develops a crush. After Arthur loses his job, his life enters a downward spiral as he commits a series of increasingly violent acts. His crimes are condemned by billionaire Thomas Wayne (Brett Cullen), who labels those envious of more successful people as “clowns”. Enraged by Wayne’s condescension, the downtrodden people of Gotham City begin to revolt against the wealthy elites. Finally, when late-night talk show host Murray Franklin (Robert De Niro) mocks one of Arthur’s stand-up acts on air, the full extent of Arthur’s anger and madness is unleashed.

In the comics, the Joker has rarely existed apart from Batman. In this movie, we see Bruce Wayne as a child and Bruce’s father, Thomas, has a hand in the plot. But the focus is entirely on Joker – specifically, on the man behind Joker.

Phillips was inspired by Martin Scorsese’s 1970s crime/psychological thrillers, including Taxi Driver and The

King Of Comedy. This link is strengthened by casting De Niro, who starred in both films, as a supporting character in Joker.

A defining aspect of the film was the casting of Phoenix as the title character, a role which has earned the actor a Golden Globe Award. Phoenix had previously declined roles in comic-book films, including those of the Hulk and Doctor Strange in their respective Marvel movies, but was attracted to Joker because it was couched as a character study rather than merely another franchise instalment. “I don’t think I’ve ever had an experience quite like this one,” Phoenix says at the Venice Film

Festival, where Joker won the Golden Lion. “The more unpredictable it was, the more inspiring it was.”

Phoenix prepared extensively for the role, including losing a drastic amount of weight: He shed a staggering 52 pounds (23.5 kg) in roughly three months. “You start to go mad when you lose that amount of weight in that amount of time,” Phoenix told The Daily Beast in Venice. Phoenix also researched political assassins and studied various mental disorders, but did not want his Joker to have a definite diagnosis. “I didn’t want a psychologist to be able to identify what kind of person he was,” Phoenix tells Associated Press, stating that he “wanted there to remain a mystery about the character”.

The film has polarised critics. Some have praised it as a vital statement about societal inequality and how marginalised people can be mistreated, while others have warned that it could inspire disenfranchised viewers to commit violent acts themselves. The conversation around the movie has often been heated. “I didn’t imagine that it would be smooth sailing,” Phoenix tells Vanity Fair about the movie’s reception. “It’s a difficult film. In some ways, it’s good that people are having a strong reaction to it.”

The movie has been a resounding success – it’s the seventh-highest grossing movie of 2019 – but it wasn’t always a sure bet. “It was a hard movie for us to get made and to convince DC and the studio,” Phillips says. “And in fairness, the studio took a bold swing with the movie and let us do exactly what we wanted... there really were no rules and boundaries for it.”

This freedom that Phillips, Phoenix, and the filmmakers had has resulted in a comic-book movie that doesn’t fit the mould, but which has nonetheless struck a chord with audiences around the world – and could well be a sign of where comic-book movies as a genre are headed.

1989 JACK NICHOLSON: Jack Nicholson portrayed the Joker in Tim Burton’s Batman. This version of the character was a gangster named Jack Napier, who is transformed after falling into a vat of acid and quickly climbs the ranks of the Gotham underworld.

2016 JARED LETO: Jared Leto portrayed the Joker in Suicide Squad. This is the first live-action film to feature Harley Quinn, the Joker’s girlfriend, and the film portrays the origins of their relationship. Leto’s modern-day, gangster-inspired portrayal of the Joker was generally poorly received, however.

2008 HEATH LEDGER: Heath Ledger’s searing performance as the Joker in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight won him widespread acclaim, including a posthumous Best Supporting Actor Oscar. Ledger’s Joker was an anarchic agent of chaos bent on driving Batman and Gotham to their breaking points.

2015–2019 CAMERON MONAGHAN: The TV series Gotham portrayed an unorthodox version of the Joker – two, in fact. Cameron Monaghan played identical twins Jerome and Jeremiah Valeska, who both become proto-Jokers. The showrunners remain tight-lipped on whether Jeremiah becomes the actual Joker, or merely serves as inspiration for a later Joker.

The beloved ghoulish clan based on Charles Addams’ New Yorker cartoons returns in the animated film The Addams Family. The all-star voice cast includes Oscar Isaac as Gomez Addams, Charlize Theron as Morticia, Chloë Grace Moretz as Wednesday, Finn Wolfhard as Pugsley, Nick Kroll as Uncle Fester, and Bette Midler as Grandmama Addams. Margaux Needler (Allison Janney), a conniving home makeover TV personality, conspires to evict the Addamses from their hilltop mansion. She has built a new planned community called Assimilation, and fears that the mysterious and kooky family will scare the regular folk away from buying property in this manicured estate. In the meantime, Gomez prepares Puglsey for the Mazurka ritual, in which he will come of age as an Addams man. While the movie does have the occasional spook, there’s a warmth to it that will leave you feeling all fuzzy inside.

The Charlie’s Angels franchise began with the original television series in 1976, and the series about women spies/detectives has been a pop culture touchstone ever since, seeing two movie adaptations released in the aughts, and most recently in 2019, a new movie reboot. The series has always had a feminist slant to it thanks to its premise, and director Elizabeth Banks, who also stars as Bosley, Charlie’s assistant, plays that up in this latest rendition. Elena Houghlin (Naomi Scott) is a brilliant engineer developing an energy conservation device that presents health risks in its current state. She blows the whistle on her employer and eventually joins the Townsend Agency, where she meets resident wild child Sabina Wilson (Kristen Stewart) and the deadly, no-nonsense Jane Kano (Ella Balinska).

Charlie’s Angels (2000): Music video director McG imbues this slick action comedy with a sense of playfulness and infectious joy. A long list of actresses including Halle Berry, Milla Jovovich, Angelina Jolie, Jodie Foster, and Jada Pinkett Smith were reportedly considered for roles in the film before Cameron Diaz, Lucy Liu, and Drew Barrymore were cast.

The Addams Family (1991): This live-action film, which marks the first time the cartoon was adapted for the big screen, stars Anjelica Huston as Morticia Addams (a role which won her a Golden Globe nomination), Raul Julia as Gomez, Christina Ricci as Wednesday, and Christopher Lloyd as Uncle Fester. The film was Barry Sonnenfeld’s directorial debut, and he would go on to direct three Men In Black films.

Terminator: Dark Fate, the sixth film in the Terminator franchise, picks up 27 years after the events of Terminator 2: Judgment Day, disregarding the story of the middle three instalments. This film marks the return of producer James Cameron, series mainstay Arnold Schwarzenegger, and star Linda Hamilton to the franchise – Hamilton last portrayed heroine Sarah Connor in Judgment Day. Dani Ramos (Natalia Reyes) is living a simple life in Mexico City with her brother and father when a highly advanced and deadly new Terminator – a Rev-9 (Gabriel Luna) – travels back through time to hunt and kill her. Dani’s survival depends on her joining forces with two warriors: Grace (Mackenzie Davis), an enhanced super-soldier from the future, and a battle-hardened Connor. As the Rev-9 ruthlessly destroys everything and everyone in its path on the hunt for Dani, the three are led to a T-800 (Schwarzenegger) from Connor’s past that may be their last hope.

THE FUTURE, REBORN

The dramedy The Farewell gently yet incisively explores differences between cultures, the migrant experience, and what it means to belong. It is based on a true story, or as its tagline puts it, “based on an actual lie”. Writer-director Lulu Wang’s paternal grandmother, her Nai Nai, was diagnosed with terminal cancer. The entire family made a pact not to tell her. Wang’s immediate family, who had migrated to the United States when she was six years old, flew to China to see Nai Nai, under the pretence of a cousin’s wedding. This is the premise

for The Farewell, in which Awkwafina gives a Golden Globe-winning performance as Billi, a fictionalised version of Wang. Awkwafina, who did not grow up in a Mandarin-speaking household, learnt the language for this film. Zhao Shuzhen plays Nai Nai, while Wang’s real grandaunt Lu Hong plays Billi’s grandaunt Little Nai Nai.

The final season of hacker drama Mr. Robot concludes the series in style

Since its debut in 2015, the psychological thriller series Mr. Robot has been one of the most captivating – if also confounding – shows on television. The show’s fourth season is also its final one, with shocking twists

– a frequent feature of the show – coming right until the end.

Mr. Robot revolves largely around Elliot Alderson (Rami Malek), a brilliant computer systems engineer and hacktivist who uses his preternatural technical abilities to try to bring down shady corporations. Elliot is laconic and struggles with social anxiety, extreme paranoia, and mental illness. In the first season, he was recruited into the hacktivist collective fsociety, which sought to bring down the mega-conglomerate E Corp and erase the world’s debt. The enigmatic founder of fsosciety, known only as “Mr. Robot” (Christian Slater), turned out to be Elliot’s alter ego, taking on the image of his own late father – Mr. Robot was just a different facet of Elliot.

The intervening seasons have been filled with international intrigue, with a Chinese hacker collective called the Dark Army becoming a powerful threat. Elliot comes to realise that the original triumphant hacking of E Corp has inadvertently done more harm than good, with the debt cancellation

leading to an economic crisis that hits the middle- and lower-income classes hard. As Elliot tries to rectify this, Mr. Robot works against him in secret, despite them ostensibly being the same person.

Season 4 promises to deliver the climactic confrontation (or reconciliation?) between Elliot and Mr. Robot, finally revealing why Mr. Robot exists at all. While the show is often bleak, Season 4’s Christmas-time setting lends it a bit of sentimentality.

Mr. Robot was not just timely – some might say it was ahead of its time. The show raised many valid concerns about the increasing interconnectivity of the world, and how vulnerable we are to myriad cyber threats. Beyond the show’s commentary, audiences connected with Elliot’s story, especially his strained relationship with his sister, fellow hacktivist Darlene (Carly Chaikin).

Series creator Sam Esmail lays out an organising principle with which to view Mr. Robot: how the relationship between Elliot and the eponymous character progresses with each season. Esmail tells Vulture that he saw the first season as an

“awakening”, the second as a show of “hardcore resistance”, and the third as “total disintegration” between the two personalities.

“This fourth season is the opposite,” Esmail elaborates, saying the keyword is “integration”. “Elliot starts to realise that there’s a lot of who he is in Mr. Robot and vice versa, so [they] start to overlap and work together.”

Esmail’s leading man was right behind him every step of the way. “I trust Sam implicitly,” Malek tells Entertainment Weekly. “I can say [Season 4 is] a very impactful, emotional and, I think, clearly well-thought-out way to end this story and this series.” And concluding the series on a high was something that Malek surely wanted. After all, it was Mr. Robot that arguably made audiences at large sit up and take notice of him. After that, Hollywood started offering him attractive opportunities, including a leading role in Bohemian Rhapsody (for which he won a Best Actor Oscar) and a supporting role as Bond villain Safin in the upcoming No Time To Die.

Slater’s career also received a huge boost from the show. After a period as something of a teen heartthrob, Slater spent most of the 2000s acting in sub-par, direct-to-DVD thrillers. “I really didn’t know how the show was going to be received or what people’s interpretation of it was going to be,” Slater tells Variety. “The final season will undoubtedly take people on an emotional roller-coaster ride, and some things may be difficult to cope with, and, of course, there will be some things that are shocking as they typically have been,” Slater adds, stating the show’s creatives were “definitely not pulling any punches” with this final season.

Mr. Robot has been a critical darling and is one of the rare shows that has garnered consistent acclaim across all its seasons. After four intense seasons of psychological drama and frighteningly plausible tech-based paranoia, this is the perfect time for Elliot and Mr. Robot to unplug – with a bang.

What do you get when you take a buddy comedy and centre it around two otherworldly characters? Good Omens! Based on the acclaimed novel by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman, the six-part dramedy, written by Gaiman himself, revolves around Aziraphale, a fussy angel, and Crowley, a loose-living demon. They’ve both been on Earth for over 6,000 years. During that time they’ve grown quite fond of it, and, against all odds, each other. But there’s a problem – the Antichrist has arrived here on Earth, which means the world they have become too fond of will end in flames, if they don’t manage to save it. This wildly imaginative and gloriously funny drama follows Aziraphale and Crowley as they join forces in an attempt to find an 11-year-old Antichrist (and his dog) and avert the apocalypse. Armageddon is coming – but it doesn’t have to be the end of the world.

(500) DAYS OF SUMMERAn offbeat romantic comedy about a woman who doesn’t believe true love exists, and the young man who falls for her. It’s a funny, true-to-life look at an unruly and unpredictable year-and-a-half of one young man’s no-holds-barred love affair. Movie channel 057

WHAT WOMEN WANTIn this Chinese-language remake of the charming Hollywood hit of the same name, Andy Lau stars as the chauvinistic and politically incorrect Sun, who miraculously attains the power to hear what women think. For folks of a certain age, the power ballad is pretty much synonymous with Celine Dion. During the ’90s, Dion’s operatic voice seemed less a human instrument and more an all-consuming musical force, washing over the adult contemporary charts with a series of diamond-certified English albums and similarly successful Francophone records. Dion’s ubiquity reached its zenith in 1997, when she lent her pipes to the soundtrack of Titanic. The film’s record-breaking box office run spilled over into radio success: The theme song “My Heart Will Go On” ended up a monster hit, with its unusual recorder part, dramatic modulation, and doomed-romance narrative a perfect match for her powerhouse voice.

The themes of this signature song – coping with loss, and holding on to love after death – have returned on her latest English offering, Courage. In 2013, after the release of her previous English-language effort, Dion’s husband of over two decades was suddenly diagnosed with throat cancer; three years later, he passed. That tragedy, and Dion’s subsequent experience of coping with it, inspires the best moments on Courage. Explaining the title, she said on a Facebook Live stream: “I think I went through a lot. And life had given me the tools… to find my inner strength, to find courage, and to keep going.”

Anyone expecting a retread of Dion’s signature styles, however, might be pleasantly surprised. Yes, the title track

might contain orchestral power ballad-y elements, but it is marked by a restrained vocal performance; the song doesn’t so much showcase Dion’s technical mastery as much as uses it as the foundation for an emotional meditation on moving on after grief. Beyond that, Courage also offers up contemporary-sounding songs, like the mid-tempo track “Imperfections” and the EDM number “Flying On My Own”.

After a 30-year career as a chanteuse, Dion exhibits a commendable willingness to push the envelope in pursuit of more eclectic sounds, all while being assured of what she does best.

In extreme circumstances of grief, loss, and love, big emotions demand a big voice to express them.

As Luke Combs tells it, times are pretty tough for the beer-drinkin’, straight shootin’, rule-breakin’ men of the world, who presumably just want to drink beer, shoot straight, and break rules, but not hearts (he’s decent like that!). But when it comes to his career, he shows no signs of hitting any roadbumps: His brand of traditional country – given a modern makeover – has already led some critics to call him the genre’s next big star. What You See Is What You Get is unabashed country music for purists, but it will also appeal to fans of catchy hooks doled out with doses of classic Nashville wit. Lead single “Beer Never Broke My Heart”, with its sharp hooks and its wounded-guy narrative, is a standout track.

Korean entertainment congolomerate JYP’s quest for the perfect blend of angelic faces and infectious dance hits never stops – and GOT7 (the name is a reverent reference to K-Pop boyband legend g.o.d.) may well be one of the company’s most successful experiments so far. GOT7 recently became the first Korean act to perform on NBC’s The Today Show, and they followed up with the launch of their latest EP, Call My Name. Featuring the smooth blend of tropical house, funk, and R&B that has already seen them top charts in South Korea, Call My Name also won the award for Performance of the Year at the Asia Artist Awards. If the album title (Sunsets & Full Moons) of this sixth studio record by Irish outfit The Script reminds you of the passing cycles of time, you’re probably right. As frontman Daniel O’Donoghue explains, this LP functions as a sequel of sorts to their eponymous debut. The two records are linked by the deaths of O’Donoghue’s parents, which happened slightly over a decade apart. Themes of mortality and loss dominate, but the callbacks to their oeuvre abound: “The Last Time” might almost be a follow-up to their 2010 single “For The First Time”, for instance. Check out “Underdog” for a rousing anthem of empowerment.

My Playlist

To add a track to MY PLAYLIST, select a song and confirm by pressing the yellow button on your handset.

Select songs from other CDs by returning to On Demand Audio menu and choosing your CDs. MY PLAYLIST can contain up to 30 songs.

To start listening, select MY PLAYLIST from the On Demand Audio menu.

To Make A Call1. Press until LCD lights up.2. Select ‘Make Call’ option with

cursor. Press OK to confirm.3. Slide credit card through card

reader in the direction of the arrow.

4. Enter country code, area code, then phone number. Eg: 81 (Japan’s country code) 6 (Osaka’s area code without the leading 0) phone number 7778888. Press to connect.

5. To end, press . For new call, repeat from Step 4.

To Make Seat-To-Seat Calls(Credit cards not required)

1. Press until LCD lights up.2. Select CALL SEAT option with

cursor; press OK.3. Dial seat number. Press 0 first

if seat number is less than 10 (eg 07B). Enter the letter by pressing the key marked with it until it appears on the LCD.

4. Press to make call; to end call.

To Receive Seat-To-Seat Calls1. Press until LCD lights up.2. Select INCOMING=OFF

option with cursor. Press OK and display will show INCOMING=ON.

3. To block calls, change display to INCOMING=OFF.

4. To answer an incoming call, press . To end, press .

To Change LanguageSelect ‘Language’ option on the LCD with cursor. Press OK to confirm. Languages available: English, Chinese (華文), French (Français), German (Deutsch) and Japanese (日本語). Scroll with cursor, select and press OK.

(Note: Chinese and Japanese options will not be displayed on the LCD).

RatesAll calls cost US$0.59 per six-second block (with a minimum charge of US$5.90 for the initial minute).

Credit CardsAmerican Express, Diners Club, Discover/Novus Card, JCB, MasterCard and VISA are accepted.

If Line Is BusyYou will be placed in a queue; handset will ring when a line is available. Press 0 to connect or ON/OFF to quit the queue.

Customer ServiceThis service is free. To access, swipe card first and press *. Then dial 12 and press SEND.

Inflight Phone is offered via satellite links and ground telecommunication networks. However, call attempts may be unsuccessful because of ground network congestion or loss of satellite links. These circumstances are beyond the control of the airline or the service provider. In such situations, disconnect and try again later.
