Mission Activities

About UsSree Narayana Mission (Singapore) [SNM], the 109th registered charity in Singapore, was founded in 1948 by a group of civic-minded and socially conscious Singaporean Malayalees who were inspired by Sree Narayana Guru, philosopher and social reformer from Kerala, South India. Since its inception, SNM has been offering a wide range of welfare services, such as financial assistance, food relief and bursary awards to needy families and to the community at large, regardless of race or religion. The organisation has also been carrying out several self-funded activities, such as its Founder’s Day Celebration, classical dance and music classes and social and recreational activities.

SNM set up its first nursing home, the Sree Narayana Mission Home for the Aged Sick (SNMH), in February 1979. By the 1980s, SNM had grown into a leading charitable organisation, taking care of the elderly as well as needy families. In July 2012, SNM opened up its first Multi-Service Centre (MSC) in Yishun under the Enhanced Eldercare Programme (EEP), a day care centre for the elderly.

In January 2013, SNM commenced operations of the EEP and Dementia Day Care Centre (DDCC) at Woodlands.

On 1 August 2008, the Sree Narayana Mission Welfare Services was established to oversee the welfare projects and programmes by SNM.

SNM was appointed as the Managing Agent for Meranti Home (MH) in May 2002. MH is an institutional care facility, fully funded by the Ministry of Social and Family Development. It provides care, shelter and rehabilitation for male, mentally burnt-out destitute persons.

On 1 March 2015, SNM was awarded the status of an Institute of a Public Character (IPC). It is now able to directly manage some of the programmes under the purview of its welfare wing, SNMWS. The diagram below shows the new structure of the Organisation.

SREE NARAYANA MISSION(SINGAPORE)

SNM has continued its collaborative efforts with schools and the SN Volunteers, and remains thankful for their valued support and valiant spirit of volunteerism. In March 2015, in partnership with SN Volunteers and Khoo Teck Puat Hospital, we were able to launch the 10-week pilot ‘Share-A-Pot’ soup meal and exercise programme for the elderly. On evaluation of the programme’s benefits for the elderly beneficiaries, we have decided to offer the ‘Share-A-Pot’ programme beyond the pilot phase.

We will continue to enhance our array of welfare programmes and community outreach initiatives in 2015 and 2016.

Sree Narayana Mission (Singapore) New Building ProjectWe are currently experiencing space constraints in carrying out our community outreach welfare programmes at the Yishun Avenue 5 premises, which already house the Home for the Aged Sick with a bed capacity of 224 and a day care centre. A building fund project has been launched with an aim of raising a sum of S$10 million over a period of three to four years for a new building.

The new premises would also allow us to offer existing and planned programmes such as free TCM clinic withphysiotherapy / rehabilitation services, senior activity corner, youth outreach activities, legal counselling and referral services for families, care-giver resource centre, a community ‘Share-A-Pot’ soup meal and exercise programme for elderly, and regular health screenings for the community. With the expansion of our activities and community partner engagement at the new premises, we will be able to better serve a wider spectrum of the community.

A fund raising charity dinner will be held on 11 November 2015 at Orchid Country Club at 7 pm. The Guest of Honour is Deputy Prime Minister, Mr Tharman Shanmugaratnam. We look forward to members’ support of the fund raising efforts and participation in the charity dinner.

Sree Narayana Mission Home for the Aged SickWe had set for ourselves the goal of modernisation, of enhancing and building the IT infrastructure of the Mission, with Phase One having been successfully carried through the previous year. Now, it is my pleasure to report that Phase Two has come to a successful conclusion as well; the cloud-based infoCare

Dear Members,

It is my pleasure on behalf of the Executive Committee to convene the 64th Annual General Meeting of the Mission and present the annual report and statement of accounts for your approval.

Sree Narayana Mission (Singapore)Sree Narayana Mission (Singapore) (SNM) has been approved as an Institution of a Public Character (IPC)under the Charities Act for a period of one year, with effect from 1st March 2015.

With the attainment of IPC status for SNM, we made it a priority this year to explore and develop collaborative relationships with a range of community partners, helping and assisting wherever we could with new welfare programmes. Working together with organisations such the SSO@Yishun, North West CDC, Nam Hong Welfare Society, Joy Centre and the Chong Pang and Nee Soon Central Community Centres and Clubs, SNM has endeavoured to create holistic welfare projects that have a special focus on community outreach to serve the underprivileged and elderly residing in the northern region of Singapore.

system has been integrated into the nursing and HR departments of the Sree Narayana Mission Home for the Aged Sick (SNMH), and implemented for use in the Sree Narayana Mission Multi-Service Centres @ Woodlands and Yishun (MSC) as well.

SNM has embarked on further promotion of social bonding and interaction among staff of SNMH and its organisations through sports activities. We hosted a badminton tournament and inter Home soccer games, in October and November respectively. Facilities for indoor table games have also been provided for staff to utilise during their leisure time.

In September 2014, we organised an overseas retreat to Johor Bahru for staff from SNMH, Meranti Home and MSC. The training sessions held during the retreat were successful in helping to spread our values and in discussing strategies on improvements and changes to help bring the standards of both our Homes and MSCs to the next level.

Meranti HomeSNM continues to refine and enhance its operation of Meranti Home (MH), with a focus towards providing more resident-centric care, working to further improve their quality of life in our care.

MH recently partnered with Griness Teambuilding and held two large-scale Team Drumming exercises involving all of our residents and residents from other Homes in Pelangi Village as well as SNMH. The exercise was well received and MH looks forward to working with more external agencies to conduct more of such activities to continue keeping our residents meaningfully engaged.

This year, MH is also placing additional emphasis on in-care programmes and activities to keep our residents meaningfully engaged. MH has engaged the services of a Percussion group to conduct sessions once a week, starting in May 2015. MH hopes to break down barriers of age and culture as well as promote better communication and teamwork among our residents through this pilot project.

In an effort to facilitate psychosocial rehabilitation within MH, we also adopted a Clubhouse Model approach. Unlike conventional day-treatment models, participants in the clubhouse are called “members” (instead of “patients” or “clients”) and restorative activities focus on the members’ strengths and abilities, not their illness. The clubhouse model seeks to demonstrate that people suffering from mental illness can successfully live productive lives and work in the community, regardless of the nature or severity of their mental illness. At present, the Home has a cycling, fishing, dancing, and divine and speakers’ clubs, with a few more clubs still in the planning stage. Other efforts to keep residents meaningfully engaged also include outings to places of interest every month.

Sree Narayana Mission Multi-Service Centres @ Woodlands & YishunThe Woodlands MSC, which started in January 2013, offers two programmes; the EEP (Enhanced Eldercare

Programme) and the DDCC (Dementia Day Care Programme), with maximum capacity of 20 and 45 respectively. The Yishun MSC provides the EEP (Enhanced Eldercare Programme) with a maximum capacity of 20.

In line with the previous year’s goals, the MSCs have organised more community outreach programmes for the residents, such as health screening events and care giver talks.

With effect from 01 May 2015, the EEP services would have ceased, and would instead be replaced by the MDC Programme (Maintenance Day Care Programme). All clients in the EEP would be transferred to the MDC programme. The MDC programme includes Nursing Care, Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy and programmes for cognitive development for clients to be actively engaged and enjoy a good quality of life. The Woodlands MSC also provides additional services such as Recreational Therapy, Garden Therapy and Multi-Sensory Stimulation Therapy.

Our Sincere ThanksSNM had successfully organised a Flag Day in July 2014. We raised $159,523 through the support of members, volunteers and staff who helped with the street collections and pledge cards. The 2014 Flag Day proceeds have been used to fund the various Sree Narayana Mission Welfare Services (SNMWS) programmes such as the bursary awards, financial assistance, food relief and the running of the MSC and SNMH.

The Mission continues to grow its volunteer-base, from both schools and corporate entities. It is through their continued support that we are able to organise and conduct the many activities and outings for the residents of SNMH, MH and the MSCs. We are deeply grateful, as well, for the invaluable corporate and individual donations we have received, in support of the programmes and initiatives of SNM.

On behalf of SNM, we would like to extend our sincere appreciation and gratitude to all of our sponsors, partners, volunteers and benefactors; it is through their invaluable contributions and efforts that we are able to do what we do for our beneficiaries.

I would like to thank especially the Ministry of Health, the Agency for Integrated Care, the National Social Service Council, and the Ministry for Social and Family Development, for the guidance and aid that they have given us. In addition, I would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to Minister for Foreign Affairs and Minister for Law and Member of Parliament for Nee Soon GRC, Mr K Shanmugam, Parliamentary Secretary for Ministry of Health and Ministry of Transport, Member of Parliament for Nee Soon GRC and our Patron of the Building Fund Committee, Assoc. Prof. Dr Muhammad Faishal Ibrahim, and Ms Ellen Lee, PBM, Member of Parliament for Sembawang GRC (Woodlands), for the constant support they have given to SNM and all its endeavours.

Gericare@NorthGericare@North is an Elder Care initiative to improve and enhance geriatric care in nursing homes in the northern sector. In collaboration with Khoo Teck Phuat Hospital (KTPH) and six other nursing homes, SNMH embarked on this project as part of its ongoing efforts in finding new ways to enhance quality of resident care.

Services Include:Tele-Consultation (also known as Tele-Medicine)A platform which provides consultation and other services through video conferencing to nursing home residents, to reduce travelling time and improve accessibility to medical support. This is conducted once a month by doctors from KTPH.

Tele-Continuous Nurse EducationA platform for collaborating nursing homes to share knowledge on various nursing and medical topics, thereby enabling nursing staff to learn from the experiences of their peers. This is conducted once a month.

Tele-Multi-Disciplinary MeetingsA platform for service providers (doctors, care-nurses, social workers etc.) to come together and discuss on matters concerning the care of their residents. This is conducted twice monthly.

Tele- Mortality AuditsA session to review and evaluate cases of residents’ demise and to ensure quality care has been rendered. This is conducted once a month.

TrainingTraining to focus on topics such as Advanced Care Planning (ACP) and Preferred Plan of Care (PPC). With a training partnership with KTPH and Agency for Integrated Care (AIC), Gericare@North works towards training up nursing staff competencies in the various domains of the Enhanced Nursing Health Standards (ENHS).

Ad-hoc ActivitiesA 2 day study trip was organized in June 2014 by KTPH for participating nursing homes to send a representative to visit Hammond Care and Hornsby Ku-Ring-Gai Health Services in Sydney, Australia. It was designed to provide new insight and explore innovative approaches to aged and palliative care. Senior Staff Nurse Niel from SNMH attended this study trip.

On October 30, 2014, a Mini-Symposium on innovative geriatric care settings, based on the recent study trip to Hammond Care, was held at SNMH. It was attended by nursing staff from different nursing homes.

Enhancements at the HomeInteriorAs part of its efforts to enhance the level of care and comfort for its residents, SNMH recently upgraded the patients’ beds. These new automated electric beds are easy for nurses and residents to reposition

and maneuver. The first round of upgrades were completed in November 2014, with the next one targeted for May 2015.

SNM had carried out several maintenance activities to upgrade and improve the facilities of SNMH. These include re-roofing, seepage prevention,

and the painting of the entire building. The two lifts in the Home were modernised and refurbished with brand new fittings early this year. The building now has a clean and fresh look.

Exterior

The external premises and garden were also landscaped to spruce up the building with more colour and vibrancy. Residents of SNMH can now enjoy the beautiful surroundings.

Staff AreaThe male staff’s toilet was also given a complete makeover. It has been redesigned into a sleek and modern area offering staff more comfort and privacy. A staff recreational corner, complete with table soccer and carom boards, has also been created.

Future PlansSNMH is planning on building an outdoor relaxation corner with facilities for social interaction and activities such as barbeques.

The Enhanced Nursing Home Standards roll into effect in 2016, and SNMH has initiated a number of projects in preparation for them. Key areas include the development of clinical infrastructure, such as an Electronic Medical Registry and Medication Management System. We are also fine-tuning staff training and standard operating procedures [SOPs], to improve quality of care and also emergency preparedness in the Home.

“I enjoy every minute I spend here, in the centre. I was a bit doubtful when I first joined the programme, but now I can

say that I am very happy I did. I used to have dull days, because there was no one to talk to or engage in activities with, so

I am very grateful to all the staff who have been making my days whole. The care and respect I get from them are beyond

words and it touches my heart. The food is also excellent, especially now with the new caterers. I feel very blessed.”

Reaching out to youthOn 24 February, 2015, MSC Woodlands engaged students from both Evergreen Secondary and My World (Montessori) Kindergarten to put up performances for clients as part of the Chinese New Year celebrations.

Touching base with the Community On November 22, 2014, the Sree Narayana (SN) Volunteers invited clients from MSC@ Woodlands to their Annual Shared Block Party with the residents from Blocks 6 to 9, held at the Multi-Purpose Hall at Block 6A Marsiling Drive. They were treated to a variety of games and songs, as well as a sumptuous dinner.

Activities at the MSCs

The MSCs provide a wide array of programmes and activities to keep clients both physically and mentally engaged through interaction, therapy and cognitive exercises.

Plans for the futureFrom 1 May, 2015, the MSCs will commence with the Maintenance Day Care (MDC) programme. All clients under the current Enhanced Eldercare Programme (EEP) will be transferred to the MDC programme.

The Centres hope to include more outdoor physiotherapy and game activities for the MDC clients, so as to eliminate the institutional image that the Centres currently have. This would give clients a sense of engagement and allow for their better well-being.

Welfare and Outreach ProgrammesSNMWS has in place a number of welfare and social assistance programmes aimed at providing aid and relief for needy individuals and families in the northern sector, and has endeavoured through the years to further develop and refine them.

Bursary Award

The SNM Bursary Award was set up to support students from low income families in their educational needs. Cash awards are disbursed to children from various primary and secondary schools in the northern sector, and in 2014, almost $70,000.00 was given out to more than 350 such students.

Financial & Food ReliefThe Financial Assistance & Food Relief Programme serves as a temporary relief measure for families facing challenging circumstances or considerable financial strain. SNMWS identifies and assesses families that are in need of assistance and provides them with vouchers or cash on a monthly basis.

Dementia Talk

A talk on dementia was conducted on 20 June, 2014, to educate caregivers and members of the public on the causes and consequences of the disorder. The talk, presented by Ms Lim Karen Amanda, from the Alzheimer’s Disease Association, was well received by members of the Woodlands constituency.

Painting WorksIn March 2015, SNM collaborated with Yishun Town Secondary School in a community outreach project. 42 students volunteered to paint the homes of 5 low income families in Yishun.

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)

SNM, in collaboration with the Nam Hong Welfare Society, provides complimentary TCM services for our residents, to help provide relief from common conditions, such as sprains and bruises, rheumatism, and muscle and joint aches. These weekly sessions commenced in October 2014, with visits to SNMH every Thursday by Dr Tan Ho Ping.

Free Medical Health Screening

In conjunction with the Care & Share Programme, SNM successfully conducted its Free Medical Health Screening on 15 November, 2014, with a total participation of about 270 people, which comprised of participants from both Yishun and Woodlands constituencies, as well as SNM staff and members. This project will be incorporated as a yearly event, as part of SNM’s growing repertoire of community outreach programmes.

Share-A-PotThe inspiration for the Share-A-Pot Programme was simple – to reach out to the seniors in the community, especially those living alone and those without a good protein diet. The programme was founded on the principles of “building bones, brawn (muscle), and brain (cognitive reserve)”. The seniors were provided with good nutrition as well as some physical exercise, in a relaxed environment that promoted social interaction. The pilot project comprised of 10 sessions, and kicked off on 14 March, 2015 at SNMH, with the support of KTPH and SN volunteers.

Future PlansA building fund project was launched with the aim of raising a sum of $10 million over a period of three to four years for a new building for SNM. The new premises would allow SNM to carry out its existing list of programmes, as well as to explore new ones, such as a free TCM clinic with physiotherapy / rehabilitation services, a senior activity corner, and legal counselling.

“Volunteering is a two-way process. Even as you give of your time and care for the elderly, it will come back to you in incalculable and unimaginable ways. The decision you make today to support with your heart and effort will have an impact on their lives.‘’

Teambuilding

In-Care ProgrammeMH has in-care programmes that focus primarily on rehabilitative training to aid clients in thedevelopment of functional skills.

These include the carrying out simple of day-to-day tasks, such as taking medication, keeping medical appointments, and maintaining personal hygiene. These would give the clients a sense of independence.

MH recently partnered with Griness Teambuilding to hold a series of drumming exercises for its residents, with the objective of promoting group activities, cooperation, and interaction. It was well received by the residents, and will continue to be a regular activity.

Volunteers from Sai Baba Service Centre visit the Home twice a month to sponsor a vegetarian meal as well as snacks for the residents. Man Fut Tong Welfare Society also sends volunteers once a month to Meranti Home to cut the residents’ hair.

To further promote communication between residents, MH has recently renovated a room for recreational activities. The room has coffee tables and a karaoke system with several thousand songs. Other recreational activities include table soccer and air hockey, which the residents enjoy.

To facilitate psychosocial rehabilitation, MH has adopted a clubhouse Model approach to its residents’ care, to demonstrate that people suffering from mental illness can work and live productively in the community. Some of the activities proposed are cycling, fishing, dancing, and speakers’ clubs.

MH also places additional emphasis on its in-house programmes and activities to keep residents meaningfully engaged. MH has engaged the services of OneHeartBeat Percussions to conduct sessions once a week, starting in May 2015.

Chathayam CelebrationsEvery year, SNM celebrates the birthday of its founder, Sree Narayana Guru, over two consecutive days, in conjunction with the Malayalee festival of Onam.

The highlight of the first day’s celebrations is the cultural show. The second day starts off early with a discourse on the Guru’s philosophical and spiritual teachings, followed by a games carnival for the children, and then a traditional vegetarian lunch. The celebrations then continue with a mini concert, followed by the presentation of scholarships awards for members’ children, special service awards for staff, and finally comes to an end with the lucky draw.

Mission ActivitiesThe Guru Samadhi marks the anniversary of Sree Narayana Guru’s passing. Every year, this Samadhi is observed with a prayer and an evening serving of a simple Kanji Sadya – rice porridge, made with coconut milk, eaten with lentils and pappadam.

SNM regularly conducts cultural, social and recreational activities, such as Yoga, music, and dance classes. These activities are open to members and non-members.
