Dear Parents and Members of our Sacred Heart School community, Despite feeling a little worn and in need of a ‘rest-up’, the truth is that 2016 is really ‘but-a-pup’ and there is still the majority of the school year ahead of us. The children are settled and in their new routine; the holiday routine we all dearly love with late lie-ins and the lack of morning rush are both now just a blur as the pace is hectic, and that feeling of ‘the holiday seemed so long’ appears in the distant memory. Yet, whilst all that is true, this Monday we begin the enrolment process for the 2017 school year. Our Prep students of 2017, little four-year-olds will begin to filter through our gate and look to join with us as the life-line of the community. And whilst I play a major role in extolling the attributes of our great community, we all have a part to play in this process – in some ways in a more major way than I do. You are our best advertisements – parents and students and staff alike. It’s the way you speak about our school - our activities, our facilities, our strong sense of community, care and belonging, the way you speak about the educational program we offer, both within the classrooms and beyond – yes you are our greatest advertisement. Your greatest contribution to the community is that you play a full and active role within the community and encourage others to join us and be this strength as well. If you have a younger sibling of school age next year then now is the time to enrol them. If you have a neighbour with school-age kids then make sure you’re singing the praises of all aspects of our community and encouraging them to come and see. Yes, its enrolment time and we all have a part to play in making this school great.

SCHOOL PRAYER – A SLIGHT ADAPTATION

Yesterday on assembly our Assembly Leaders led our school prayer, but for the first time with invocations that follow it. From today when we pray the school prayer we will conclude our prayer with the following: Venerable Catherine McAuley (the response we all say is ‘Pray for us’) Saint Mary of the Cross MacKillop (again we respond ‘Pray for us’) Sacred Heart of Jesus (again, ‘Pray for us’) And may we always remember (this time we respond ‘to pray for one another’) Catherine McAuley is the foundress of the Sisters of Mercy, the religious order who were first called on to staff our school. She is ‘Venerable’ as she is on the first step towards sainthood. Mary MacKillop is Australia’s first saint, and her official title is ‘Mary of the Cross’. The Sacred Heart of Jesus is whom our school is dedicated to. And lastly we remind the community that we must pray for each other as fellow pilgrims on the journey of life. Please join with the students as they proudly pray the school prayer at all our major occasions. F.A.I.T.H LEVY AND SCHOOL LIBRARY FUND

Near the end of each term I send home a reminder about two of our school initiatives for people looking to increase their financial support of our school. F.A.I.T.H. levy (Families Acting In Times of Hardship)

This levy is voluntary, with all funds going to support families within our school community who are ‘doing it tough’ and experiencing some form of hardship. These funds enable their children to have full access to school activities and excursions, and assist families to ensure their children have access to uniforms and book requirements. It goes a long way to alleviating the stress families experience when the ‘funds don’t quite make it’. This fund is not tax-deductible. When contributing to this levy please reference the payment with ‘FAITH LEVY’. Library Fund Levy

This levy is tax deductible for taxation purposes, with all funds from the levy going to support the resourcing of our school Library. The Library Fund Contribution amount is listed on the Term Fee Statements. I ask that you please keep these funds in mind and if you are able and so inclined, to donate to them to support our school community. As Madonna Power remains unfit for active duty after her fall during work activity, she will not be returning to teaching until at least the end of Term 2 this year. I am grateful to Ms Catherine Waterhouse for her willingness to continue to work with Year 1 Maroon in Madonna’s absence. Also, at the end of this term we will farewell Mrs Cherlyn Connell as she ‘puts her feet up’ for the rest of the 2016 school year. Cherlyn has worked tirelessly for the good of her class in her time at Sacred Heart and has deserved a great rest. Please keep both Madonna and Cherlyn in your prayers. Congratulations

- To our Zone 6 swim squad who competed last Friday against the other Catholic schools of our area. What great ambassadors for our school and add to that their great sportsmanship. They were proud representatives of our school. My thanks to coaches Duane Cannell, Tracy Paskin and Catherine Waterhouse for their training and support of the team.

- To Year 2 Maroon for their beautiful recognition of our Grandparents on the recent Grandparents’ day. The visitors had a wonderful time and we are always so fortunate that they come in such numbers. Thanks too goes to the catering class of Year 1 Silver – the food was splendid.

A ‘SUPER’ DAY

Thanks to the many students who came dressed as a Non-Negotiable Super-Hero for the day. The day, an initiative of our existing super-heroes -

is celebrated to assist our students to think of other aspects of our community which are non-negotiable. We had many creative ideas which showed some real thought about the way our students wanted the school environment shaped. Congratulations to them all. A FEW DAYS NEXT WEEK

No matter how busy you thought school was now, the term will end in a hive of activity. On three days next week we will celebrate a different aspect of the Easter story in Donna Philps Place commencing at 2pm. These prayer session will set the scene for our Easter holidays and the very important events which surround it. Dance Cart concert – an event not to be missed – In Donna Philps Place a 9am on Monday morning for our children to show us just how talented we really are. It really is worth seeing. CARITAS - 'Wear Green' day - Tuesday. Each child is asked to bring a gold coin and to wear something green to school on that day. We could have undertaken this on St Paddy’s day, but what better way to be Irish than to do it on another day. Please support this activity which forms part of our school ‘Outreach’ program. Pastoral Activities day (Easter theme) – Each term we provide an opportunity for the children across all year levels, to join together in groups based on their house group, to undertake a range of activities. Not only do they have lots of fun but the pastoral benefit to the students is invaluable. Connections for the students are made across and throughout the school; with bonds being forged to strengthen our student body. Our students feel like they belong because they are truly known. Sacred Heart Cross Country event - this takes place on Wednesday morning, commencing at 9:15am. All parents are very welcome to join us. A REMINDER

Our students need to know that the school grounds are a safe place to be and that they will be safe from harm here. To this end, can I remind you that no parent should approach a child who is not their own within the school grounds, particularly if the child you approach is one you suspect is having altercations with your child. The proper procedure is that all approaches must be made via a Staff member. As this is an important aspect of our commitment to keeping children safe, transgression in this area cannot be tolerated. This is the week preceding Easter and the final week of Lent. Holy Week begins with Palm Sunday and ends with Holy Saturday, the day before Easter Sunday. Holy Week includes Holy Thursday (also known as Maundy Thursday) and Good Friday, which, together with Holy Saturday, are known as the Triduum. Our Lenten journey continues for the next week with the Stations of the Cross and various liturgies. The liturgies for Holy Week are: The Triumphant entry into Jerusalem (Palm Sunday) – Monday 21

Parents and Carers, Over the past ten days or so I have worked with children who have lost family pets so I offer some thoughts on losing pets. Most people who have pets gradually include them as a “family member.” A deep bond can develop between our pet and us. A large number of students over the years have shared with me “that our pet is the one who loves me, listens to me when I am upset, never rejects me and is always available to me.” Given the deep bond between us and our pets it is natural to be devastated when our pet dies. We may experience the deepest feelings of grief, loneliness and sadness when we lose a pet. Here are some ways to help us cope with the loss of a much loved pet:

Own how you feel and don’t allow anyone to tell you how you ought to feel.

Speak with friends, family members, school friends about how they felt when their pet died.

Have a “ritual” to say goodbye to your pet. Your whole family may work together to plan a farewell ritual.

Allow your family, especially children, time to grieve over the loss of their pet before you purchase a replacement pet.

If you have other pets, look after them because they too may be missing the lost pet. Have a good week. Teresa.

The Art of Bowing The children have learned that Japanese bow when they greet as well as when they

show gratitude or apologise. Bowing in Japan has many functions in one gesture. It is

impolite not to return a bow if someone bows to you in Japan.

Bows can generally be classified into three types: an informal bow is made at about a 15 degree

angle, a formal bow is at 30 degrees, and very formal bow is at around 45 degrees. The deeper

you bow, the more you show respect to the person you are greeting, depending on their social

status or age. If the person is a higher status or older than you, it is common to bow deeper

and longer; showing more respect.

This is how to bow in Japan:

Step 1

Put your feet together.

Step 2

Place your hands at your sides if you are a man or

join them low in front of your body if you are a

woman.

Step 3

Lean forward with only your chest and waist.

Step 4

Then come back up.

When I came to Australia about 20 years ago, I had a huge culture shock because for

the first time I saw people hugging each other. It took a while for me to get used to

this Western custom because after childhood in Japan I never hugged or kissed my

friends, relatives or parents.

Year 3 Silver 3 Silver’s highlight this week was developing our own super hero. Writing a

description and creating some wonderful illustrations.

Year 4 Maroon Our highlight of the week has been doing Easter craft with our Prep friends.

Year 4 Silver In Year 4S our highlight of this week has been collaborating in groups to create a Freeze Frame related to our Literature study of The Peasant Prince.

Year 4 White Highlight of the Week in 4W was our Superhero Day where we all got to dress up to showcase what we know about the Four Non-Negotiables.

Year 5 Maroon Our highlight of the week was creating our diorama this week on the ‘animal of our choice’. It looks amazing, showing the country they live in, their characteristics, habitat, diet and predators. It was fun!

Year 5 Silver We are looking forward to the Cross Country, Dance Cart performance and,

most of all, the Easter holidays at the end of next week.

Year 6 Maroon This week’s highlight has been Year 6 being part of the World-wide Association of Natural Disasters (WAND) Conference during which many of the Natural Disaster-ologists presented their papers on their favourite natural disasters.

Our Science Experiments on the Impact of Weather to our Earth Why does the ball of clay break down in the water?

Clay particles are very small. The molecules are plate-shaped and cling together tightly. They slide over one another but do not separate easily. This makes clay malleable and sticky. Clay particles will not easily fall into separate particles like sand grains do. However, when water contacts the clay, the small particles separate from one another. The particles are so small that they are not easy to see in the water, instead making the water cloudy. As students gently wash the water around the clay ball, more particles separate away from the ball making it smaller. This simulates water washing away particles from rocks over time. ‘Buff it Up’ Wind alone can cause weathering to rocks given long enough, but the rate of weathering increases greatly if the wind is carrying fine, abrasive sand or other rough or hard particles. In Australia this can occur when wind comes from arid regions without much vegetation to protect the soil and similarly when wind comes from over a beach. ‘Rockin’ Rocks’

Rocks are weathered by collisions and friction with particles carried in wind, water or ice. Protruding corners of rock are particularly affected. This demonstration shows this quickly by using softer sugar cubes instead of rock. ‘Acid Rain’

Acid can get into the atmosphere naturally in volcanically active regions or due to human activity as a result of mining and other industrial processes. Typically, sulphuric acid breaks the chemical bonds between particles of rocks, concrete and metal. In this demonstration, students use acetic acid solution (in vinegar) to quickly break bonds and dissolve part of a sugar cube.
