Since starting college at Boston University in the fall, I have continued to pursue my skating career in addition to working on my academics. This past season, I skated for Team Excel’s Junior and Collegiate lines representing the Skating Club of Boston at the 2011 Eastern and National Synchronized Skating Championships. Skating synchro throughout my first year in college has been both a blessing and a bit of a challenge. Coming into the season, I was extremely excited to skate for the Junior line and be able to travel around the US to compete against the other top teams in the field. I also knew that skating on Junior would require me to keep my skating skill levels up and train at least three days a week for about 9 hours total. The Collegiate line, a fully funded scholarship inter‐collegiate team, provided me with a more relaxed and chill environment to skate with other skater around New England, Rhode Island, New Hampshire, and Maine. That team consisted of 21 skaters from 19 different colleges. So while most college students only had friends from their own college, I felt privileged to know so many people from all around the area. But because I dedicated 4 days a week and about 16 hours a week skating and commuting to and from practice, I definitely did not feel like I had a typical freshman year of college. I was hardly ever at school on the weekends and some week nights due to practice, but instead I spent my time at the rink with my teammates. If and when I was at school, I would spend some time skating at BU’s own rink with the Boston University Figure Skating Club that was conveniently located right next door to my dorm room. I also had the chance to participate in the renowned 99 th Annual Ice Chips Skating Show that is held yearly by the Skating Club of Boston through skating with Team Excel. All in all, I have had a skating filled year and cannot wait to begin training again for the following season with Team Excel Collegiate and the Boston University Figure Skating Club (in which I might compete solo ice dancing and freestyle next year).
